2 Science of Glassbreak Detection Why is Perimeter Protection Important? Types Of Glass Conventional security systems generally use two types of sensors magnetic contacts and passive infrared detectors (PIRs). Magnetic contacts are designed to sound an alarm if a protected window or door is opened. PIRs are designed to detect the intruder walking through the premises if entry is gained through other means. There are several types of glass, each with characteristics. The four most common are discussed here. Full perimeter protection is an added dimension to a security system Perimeter protection systems are comprised of a combination of different kinds of sensors installed on the outside windows, doors and other openings of the building so an alarm can be sounded before an intruder enters. Because glassbreak sensors monitor glass that is most likely to be broken by an intruder for entry, they help sound an alarm while the intruder is still outside. Alarms that signal the start of a break-in are the kind that help reduce property damage and confrontation by helping frighten the intruder away before he gets inside. distinct Plate Glass. Plate glass is the type most people are familiar with. It is typically found in homes and older commercial buildings. When it breaks, plate glass shatters into large jagged pieces. It is not used in glass doors because of the risk of injury. Tempered glass. Often referred to as safety glass. When it breaks it shatters into thousands of tiny pieces, thus reducing the risk of injury. Tempered glass is found in the majority of commercial windows. In the home, tempered glass is used in sliding glass doors, side windows next to doors, low windows, and other areas where the risk of accidental breakage is high. Protecting the safety of families and employees with perimeter sensors requires an understanding of the science behind glassbreak sensor technologies. You will find hereafter the properties of different glass types, the characteristics of the glassbreak signal, the acoustic, shock and dual technologies. Plate glass breaks into large jagged pieces. Tempered glass shatters into thousands of tiny pieces. Laminated glass has a thin film of plastic sandwiched between two panes of glass. Wired glass is similar to plate glasss but is formed with embedded wire mesh. Laminated Glass. Laminated glass is two panes of plate glass laminated together with a plastic polymer film between them. This glass and plastic sandwich is very strong and difficult to break. When laminated glass is broken, the plastic inside absorbs much of the energy of the break and holds the glass shards together. Laminated glass is considered safety glass. It is common in commercial applications, such as business offices and retail stores. Wired Glass. Wired glass is formed with embedded wire mesh. Firerated wired glass breaks similar to plate glass, but won t fall out. It is used for tire barrier/door applications. Determining Glass Types. These four glass types look very similar when installed. In fact, it is highly unlikely that the salesperson or installer can be certain which glass type is present. Since all three-glass types can be found in the same building, a reliable glassbreak sensor must be able to detect all types of glass without adjustment for glass type. The ShatterPoint must feel an impact and hear the sound of breaking glass before signaling an alarm. That means better detection and fewer false alarms for you.

3 Science of Glassbreak Detection Glassbreak Characteristics Acoustic Frequencies Generated. When glass breaks, it generates sound in a band of frequencies that range from the infrasonic (which is lower than we can hear), through the audio band from 20 Hz to 20 khz (which we can hear), to the ultrasonic (which is higher than we can hear). Glassbreak acoustic sensors listen for the sound Frequencies associated with glass breaking. Shock Frequencies Generated. Breaking glass also produces specific shock frequencies. These shock frequencies travel through the glass, and often through the window frame and the surrounding walls and ceiling. The most intense frequencies generated are between 3 Hz and 5 khz. Glassbreak shock sensors feel these shock frequencies and signal an alarm. To change a glassbreak test as realistic as possible, you have to break glass the way a burglar does: - Burglars break real windows in outside walls. - Burglars break all glass types plate, tempered and laminated. - Burglars break glass quietly they don t want to get caught. - Burglars break into real rooms with carpets and furnishings. Acoustic Sensor Technology Single-Technology Acoustic Sensors Listen For the Sound of Breaking Glass at One or Two Frequencies. Acoustic glassbreak sensors currently fall into one of two categories: single - or dual-frequency detection and Pattern Recognition Technology. Acoustic sensors use a microphone to listen for the sounds of breaking glass. Processing circuitry analyses the sounds to distinguish between glassbreak events and false alarms. Normally, the sensor has less than one-tenth of a second to determine whether a sound is a glassbreak event or a False alarm. Amplitude Amplitude Frequency Single-frequency acoustic sensors listen for a lound sound at a single frequency Frequency Dual-frequency sensors listen for two acoustic frequencies travelling through the air. Pattern Recognition The original acoustic sensors listened for a high amplitude (loud) sound at the frequency where glassbreak sounds peak, typically 5 khz. While effective at detecting glass breaking, these sensors were susceptible to false alarms from other high amplitude sounds at the same frequency clanging metal pots, for instance. False-alarm immunity can be improved by listening for a loud sound at two or three characteristic frequencies. However, if the sound at one of the frequencies is not loud enough, the alarm will not sound. Window coverings, such as blinds and drapes, can reduce the loudness of the break, thereby reducing the chances such dual-frequency sensors will detect a break-in. In addition, experienced intruders can often evade such sensors by breaking glass quietly. Summarising the Benefits of Glassbreak Sensor Protection Glassbreak sensors are an important part of a perimeter protection system. They are designed to sound an alarm during the first seconds of an attempted break-in, when the glass breaks. This usually means that the intruder is still outside when he triggers the alarm. In some cases, burglars won t try to enter a building if they can see the glassbreak sensors and know the building is protected by a security system. Helps Reduce Commercial Theft Losses. A burglar who breaks a protected window is likely to run when an alarm sounds. It is important, however, to be clear with business clients and prospects that smash-and-grab theft through a broken window can still occur. A plan that includes glassbreak sensors, however, can provide greater protection from theft than a system that allows the burglar to move around in the building until he trips a PIR. Provides Freedom of Movement. With complete perimeter protection, occupants and pets can move about freely whenever the PIRs are not armed. An alarm alerts anyone in the building to the possible presence of an intruder, and simultaneously notifies the central monitoring station to summon the appropriate authorities.

4 Acoustic Sensors The Aritech acoustic glassbreak sensor combines high false alarm immunity and excellent detection by recognizing the exact frequency pattern generated by glass breaking. Instead of listening for a loud sound at one or two characteristic frequencies, the Glassbreak sensor listens at the glassbreak frequency spectrum. This not only enables it to discriminate common false alarm sources, but also ensures detection of even the quietest of breaks so it can be used with blinds or light curtains. 6 On-the-glass Sensors The Aritech GS 110/200 series of glassbreak detectors has been designed using the most advanced hybrid electronics to provide an exceptional level of sophistication within a small and unobtrusive housing. The GS 110/200 contains all the necessary circuitry for excellent detection whilst filtering out and rejecting all unwanted signals that could otherwise result in nuisance alarms, e.g. ultra-sound, radio frequency interference etc. Suitable for use on standard window glass or plate glass the GS 110/200 provides a 2-metre radius of protection, detecting a frequency of 150KHz which appears when the glass is broken. The detector may be fitted as close as 2 cm from the window frame and still provide a full 2-metre radius of coverage on standard glass. The GS 110/200 is a passive sensor. Therefore any number of detectors may be installed on the same window pane without the risk of interaction. 7 Shock Sensors Aritech offers a full range of proven shock sensors which provide reliable perimeter protection 24 hours a day. A break-in is detected as soon as the intruder attempts to force, smash, drill, or even saw the protected window, frame or door, which means the alarm is activated whilst the intruder is still outside. This minimises damage to the building and maximises personal security, since shock sensors can be armed 24 hours a day, allowing unrestricted movement throughout protected premises. The sensor is designed to activate (contact will open) when an acceleration greater than 1G is detected. This could be caused, for example by a strong blow, a high speed drill or sawing because the frequencies of these shocks fall within the sensor's range of detection. Vibrations caused by traffic, rain or wind will not cause the sensor contact to open because a specially designed damping cylinder inside the sensor head absorbs the energy of these minor shocks, therefore preventing false alarms.
