Overall installation costs are lower than with direct wired sensors, since inexpensive two-conductor 4-20 ma signal wire can run over long distances instead of expensive extension or compensation wires for thermocouples. Failures in hazardous areas are dangerous and can lead to injury and/or loss of life or property. Simply connecting a sensor to an explosion proof enclosure does not make a temperature assembly explosion proof. For true safety, the whole assembly and each component must be properly designed and rated. Documented safety FM/CSA dictates special requirements to ensure plant and personnel safety.
