6 Quell smoke alarms use two main sensor types to detect fires in residential environments: ionisation and photoelectric. Photoelectric sensors are capable of detecting the larger smoke particles produced by burning foam, rubber and synthetic materials. Ionisation sensors are suitable for detecting burning paper, wood and flammable liquids. WARRANTY Quell also manufacture alarms specifically designed to detect the presence of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere. It is important that you consider your home environment and choose the right alarm for your room. 15 CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms detect the early presence of carbon monoxide emitted from gas sources such as heating and cooking systems, vehicle engines, fuels and blocked chimneys. CO alarms are intended to supplement conventional smoke alarms, not replace them. A CO alarm is not a smoke alarm and, therefore, will not satisfy legal requirements regarding the installation of smoke alarms in the home. 25 DIFFERENT SENSORS FOR DIFFERENT FIRES Photoelectric sensors detect the types of fires that can smoulder for hours before bursting into flames whereas ionisation sensors are designed to detect fast flaming fires. Fire safety experts recommend installing both types in a residential environment. FIRE SAFETY TIPS Fire alarms should be replaced every 10 years. Refer to the expiry date on the bottom of your alarm. Replace your battery once a year (does not apply to sealed lithium nonremovable batteries). We advise replacing your batteries when daylight saving begins so you don t forget (Does not apply to 10-year lithium battery powered alarms.) Areas to avoid when installing near ceiling fans and air conditioners and bathrooms, garages, near furnaces and/or water heaters. Clean and vacuum your smoke alarm at least every 6 months to prevent dust build up that can cause nuisance activations. Never paint your smoke alarm.
