8 Fire extinguishers are centrally located 1 st floor-located in the hallway next to the radiator 2 nd floor hallway outside of room 5 next to the stairs 3 rd floor-in the hallway outside of room 9 Basement on wall behind the stairs

9 Fire Detection Wireless smoke detection system w/ 5 detectors Detector locations Basement 2 detectors Hallway at each floor Fire Suppression Hand held extinguishers for small fires only No automatic sprinkler system

10 Line-type heat detector using hollow copper tube 1/8 copper tubing along ceiling on all floor hallways and offices but not stairwells Heat creates pressure difference in tube which sounds an alarm Alarm sends signal to W&M Police and activates two horns in building Horn locations: Basement and 3 rd Floor

12 Emergency evacuation maps are located on all three floors and the basement to indicate: Routes for building evacuation Fire extinguisher locations Important to keep routes and exits clear

17 Alert others in the building Yell Whistle Air horn Exit the building Call 911 after you are outside the building

18 Exit paths are indicated on the evacuation maps Exit paths are not marked with illuminated exit signs Recommend occupants close office doors when they exit to facilitate exit when visibility is obscured

19 If the hallway becomes filled with smoke Get low on your hands and knees and crawl. Cover your face with a wet cloth. Proceed to the nearest exit or place of refuge.

20 Meet at the designated meeting area, i.e. muster point. Account for building occupants at the designated meeting area. Wait for W&M Police and/or emergency services to arrive.

21 Once outside, alert the Fire Department of any information you have observed. Fire Smoke Trapped occupants

22 If you are unable to exit the building Isolate yourself from the fire and/or smoke Close doors Seal door with a wet cloth Inform others of your location Call 911 or W&M Police at Signal others from the window Yell Wave

23 If exit path from 3 rd floor is filled with smoke, 3 rd floor occupants will don 5 minute escape packs and exit quickly If exit path from 3 rd floor is blocked by fire, 3 rd floor occupants shall take refuge in the left restroom. Close door and place wet towel at the bottom of the door Signal for help Wait for assistance

25 Williamsburg Fire Department (WFD) Participated in planning Is aware that 3 rd floor occupants may need assistance Verified ladder truck can reach window EH&S provided WFD copy of floor plans and given them a walkthrough

27 Air flows from cylinder to hood constantly until the cylinder is empty (5 minutes). Loose-fitting hood The hood is designed to be a reservoir of breathing air. Hood is not designed to provide splash protection or withstand exposure to direct flame or high heat.

28 No audible alarm when cylinder is nearly empty. Strap for wearing over shoulder or around waist

29 Open the orange pouch cover Open the cylinder valve all the way (1-1/2 full turns counter-clockwise) Pull hood from pouch and listen for sound of air rushing inside hood

30 Stretch the neck band with both hands and pull the hood over your head so that the regulator hose is at the front

31 Make sure there is nothing (such as clothing or hair) between the neck band and your neck to prevent a good seal Immediately exit to a safe atmosphere If there is intense heat from fire, it is better to return to 3 rd floor area of refuge and await rescue

32 Check the cylinder gauge on your escape pack monthly to ensure it is full.

33 Look for broken or bent parts The gauge lens must not be cracked or broken The gauge face must be visible without distortion Call EH&S Office if you note any concerns EH&S Office will inspect cylinders annually

34 Store escape packs where they are: Readily accessible in an emergency Protected from damage Be careful not to drop cylinder or bump valve knob. An unsecured cylinder can become an airborne projectile under its own pressure if the valve is opened even slightly
