5 Manor Park Reception Opening hours: Mon. Fri. 8 am 11 pm, Sat & Sunday 10 am to 4 pm. Collect mail & parcels (parcels after ). Letters are delivered directly to Bellerby Court by the Post Office Parcels/signed letters collected after notification Court reception staff will deal with all your day-to-day enquiries, lost keys (replacement 20). Report to reception for lockouts and ask for Security assistance 3 strikes and then you pay. Please do not forget or loose your key. Heart and Soul (bar and café)
6 Guide to Communal Living Your flat & flatmates If you are affected by the behaviour of your flatmates - speak to your flatmates! The best (most friendly) flats are those that are open & honest with each other. Speak to your flatmates Expect to be spoken to Help from Mentors problems affecting individuals and flats Meetings with Wardens available upon request. Contact us at: Manorparkwardens@surrey.ac.uk
7 Late night noise problems call Security on Guide to Communal Living Noise Noise should be a minimum between 11 pm and 8 am and guests are not permitted between 11 pm and 8 am. Music and musical instruments should be played through headphones & no sub-woofers speakers allowed Common Room bookings for resident parties (only on Friday and Saturday nights & must finish by 11 pm ) authorised by Wardens with 1 weeks notice. Form available online. No parties during Exam periods we are extra vigilant about noise during exam period.

9 Guide to Communal Living Your Kitchen This is what your kitchen should NOT look like. YOU are all collectively responsible for your kitchen. Please keep it tidy. The cleaning staff will NOT clean communal areas if they are considered too messy photographs will be taken and forwarded to Wardens for action.
10 Guide to Communal Living Your Kitchen Not cleaning up after yourself is not acceptable. Please do not put food, and especially rice, down the sink Please put waste food into the kitchen bins If you have a problem, speak to your housemates!
11 Guide to Communal Living Your Kitchen Food theft... is selfish, rude and thoughtless &... causes arguments amongst flatmates Advice: ALWAYS ask before taking and replace what you take If you are struggling for money to pay for food you may be able to get some money from the Student Hardship fund If theft occurs please record as much detail and let your Mentor know
12 Guide to Communal Living Your Bathroom Please shower with the bathroom door closed to avoid setting off the fire alarm. To avoid mould build-up, please keep fan extraction system on and open windows after showers. Mould can be removed with cleaning materials from shops
13 Guide to Communal Living General Comments Manor Park is a car free zone - no car parking at Manor Park, including overnight night. Fixed penalty notices are issued. Please don t park bikes in stairwells use the card/key activated bike sheds. Motorbikes need to registered with University Security and can be parked at near to Francis Crick Road (near AF30-33 flats). Arrange for deliveries, taxi pick-ups at the front of Manor Park Reception (not onto MP itself)
14 Guide to Communal Living Smoking Outdoors Smoking is not permitted anywhere indoors, at any entrance, balcony, stairwells or next to ground floor windows within 2 m. Disciplinary action can be taken (fine 50 first offence) WITHIN 2 METERS FROM MAIN ENTRANCES, STAIRWELLS, BALCONIES AND OPENABLE WINDOWS No smoking on the balconies or stairwells
15 Fire Safety in Residences Smoking Indoors No smoking, including electronic cigarettes, in the residences ( 50 fine for a first offence). Naked flames (e.g. tea lights & candles), hookah pipes & incense burners are not allowed in rooms.
16 Fire Safety in Residences Bedrooms What was this? Fire alarm = a very loud continuous sound you must get out. When the fire alarm sounds you MUST evacuate the building + Stay outside until allowed back-in.
17 Fire Safety in Residences Bedrooms What is this? Tampering with a smoke detector (e.g. covering) is illegal & very dangerous. When caught tampering with a smoke detector: First offence: 100 fine + final warning Second offence: Removal from residences No excuses for tampering with a smoke or heat detector.
18 Fire Safety in Residences Bedrooms and Kitchens Bedrooms & corridors with smoke detectors. Activated by mist so (i) keep your shower door closed and extraction fan on. (ii) Use aerosols, hair dryers or straighteners as far from the detector as possible (iii) No cooking/kettles in bedrooms Kitchens are fitted with heat detectors Smoke/steam does not affect them Fire doors must not be propped open
19 Fire Safety in Residences Kitchens Never ever leave cooking food unattended for any length of time. e.g. saucepans boil dry. Source of (few) kitchen fires. Disciplinary action can be taken against you You can also be charged for damage to the kitchen or any equipment.
20 Fire Safety in Residences Electrical Safety Electrical Good must have a CE rating to be safely used in the UK Many electrical items from outside European counties such as rice cookers do not have this mark. Only use electrical goods with a CE mark.
21 Fire Safety in Residences Electrical Safety in Your Room No unauthorised portable heaters in rooms No washing machines, kettles or rice cookers in rooms Unauthorised items in rooms can be confiscated.
22 Fire Safety in Residences Electrical Safety & Water don t mix Please do not use hoovers to mop up water spillages. It can be very dangerous. Electricity and water don t mix!!!

24 University Life Meningitis ACWY Vaccination As a fresher you are in a high risk group, particularly in the first few weeks of term. Question: Have you had your Men ACWY vaccine before coming to university? No Yes If the answer is NO, you need to get it as soon as possible. Register with the GP and ask for Men ACWY vaccine If the answer is YES, brilliant! The vaccine will protect you against some of the most common causes of meningitis
25 University Life Meningitis Symptoms Common Symptoms of Meningitis Fever, cold hands and feet Severe muscle pain Drowsy, difficult to wake Severe headache Vomiting Dislike bright lights Confusion and irritability Convulsions/seizures Look for a rash but don t wait for it Call University Security x 3333 if at University or call 999 if away from the University.

29 University Life Looking after yourself and each other If you are concerned about a friend or a flatmate perhaps they have changed behaviour said things that make you feel uncomfortable started mixing with new people that have views or beliefs that cause you or others distress or concern Then you can speak to your Mentor, Warden, Centre of Wellbeing, the Chaplaincy, Student Support Services, Court Reception Staff, your academic tutor These are your flatmates; help each other.

31 University Life Misuse of Drugs The University has a zero tolerance policy for illegal drug use, possession or supply. Includes cannabis, NO x canisters and any substances formerly considered as legal highs they are not legal. Disciplinary action will be taken against any student involved. Referral to drug counselling sessions (Centre of Wellbeing)
