1 Local Government Risk Management Services Safety Theme & Poster Program January 2011 The attached safety theme program is designed to help you get an important safety message across to all employees in a simple-to-use fashion that can be completed each month. This approach involves the following suggested steps: Monthly Theme Poster: Make copies and post wherever you will get the most impact Monthly Theme Page: Repeats the poster message with the safety theme topic of the month; make copies to hand out to each safety meeting participant Participant Sign-in Sheet Monthly Safety Self-Inspection Checklist for use in each department Suggested Agenda of the Monthly Meeting: - Assemble the participants, hand out copies of the theme page, and pass around the sign-in sheet. - Read the theme aloud and discuss aspects of the theme in the department; give examples, ask for ideas, and encourage participation. - Discuss accidents and incidents over the last month. - Issue safety inspection checklists for the month to each department inspection team. - Discuss all inspection items noted from the previous month s reports, including the status of completion of reported items. 2 Keep It Safe With Chainsaws! Use Your Training And Knowledge
3 Chainsaw: Training, Knowledge, and Safety Operating a chainsaw is inherently hazardous. Potential injuries can be minimized by using proper personal protective equipment and safe operating procedures. Before Starting a Chainsaw Check controls, chain tension, and all bolts and handles to ensure that they are functioning properly and that they are adjusted according to the manufacturer s instructions. Make sure that the chain is always sharp and the lubrication reservoir is full. Start the saw on the ground or on another firm support. Drop starting is never allowed. Start the saw at least ten feet from the fueling area, with the chain s brake engaged. Fueling a Chainsaw Use approved containers for transporting fuel to the saw. Dispense fuel at least 10 feet away from any sources of ignition when performing construction activities. No smoking during fueling. Use a funnel or a flexible hose when pouring fuel into the saw. Never attempt to fuel a running or HOT saw. Chainsaw Safety Do not wear loose-fitting clothing. Clear away dirt, debris, small tree limbs and rocks from the saw s chain path. Look for nails, spikes or other metal in the tree before cutting. Shut off the saw or engage its chain brake when carrying the saw on rough or uneven terrain. Keep your hands on the saw s handles, and maintain secure footing while operating the saw. Proper personal protective equipment must be worn when operating the saw, which includes hand, foot, leg, eye, face, hearing and head protection. Be careful that the trunk or tree limbs will not bind against the saw. Watch for branches under tension, they may spring out when cut. Gasoline-powered chainsaws must be equipped with a protective device that minimizes chain saw kickback. Be cautious of saw kickback. To avoid kickback, do not saw with the tip. If equipped, keep tip guard in place. LGRMS has just added a new fourteenminute video on chainsaw safety, Chainsaw Safety Basics: An Expert s View. It covers preoperation, personal protective equipment, and safe operation procedures.
