LOCATION The College Horticulture (COH) Bengaluru campus the University Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot (UHSB) is situated on the western side the University Sciences, Bengaluru (UASB), GKVK campus. It is about 14 km away from Bengaluru City Railway Station / Central Bus Terminal (Majestic) and 21 km from Kempegowda International Airportwith two approaches, one on Bengaluru-Hyderabad highway (NH-7) and another on new BBMP road on the western side the campus. 2. ABOUT US Prior to the establishment the University Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot, the Division Horticulture under the University Sciences, Bengaluru was fering M.Sc., (Agri.) in Horticulture during 1970 s. Subsequently, postgraduate programme was further widened during to include various disciplines viz., Fruit Science; Vegetable Science; Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops; Floriculture & Landscape Architecture and Postharvest Technology. The programmes were further strengthened under the UNDP in close collaboration with Indian Institute Horticulture Research (IIHR), Hessarghatta. Under the programme, HRD was further strengthened with additional manpower, besides strengthening the departments by procuring state--the-art equipment and facilities. Consequent to the establishment UHSB, the entire PG programme was transferred from UASB the state. Accordingly, the UHSB continued PG programmes in Horticulture from the academic year at GKVK campus, Bengaluru. New PG programmes in the disciplines Biotechnology & Crop Improvement and Plant Pathology were started during while Soil Science & Chemistry and Entomology were started during The college is also fering two years Diploma in General Horticulture and undergraduate programme since and , respectively. The College Horticulture is closely associated with Regional Horticultural Research and Extension Centre (RHREC), Bengaluru in all its activities which was established during September, It is the main strength to the College Horticulture for its postgraduate research and training. The COH works closely with IIHR, UASB and other premier institutions.
2 VISION "Our responsibility is to continually improve overall development the students through imparting quality education and training for a challenging tomorrow so as to serve the agrarian community in particular and society at large and be valuable assets. Our vision is to evolve creativity in research and extension knowledge base with a focus to do a larger good to the society and Nation 3. MANDATE OBJECTIVES To impart quality undergraduate and postgraduate education in all branches horticulture. To develop skilled manpower required at grassroot level through postgraduate diploma, diploma and certificate courses in horticulture. To undertake need based strategic and applied research by the faculty. To develop technologies for immediate needs the farmers and horticultural industries. To facilitate transfer technology to the farming community and industry through continuous training and other outreach programmes. 4. ACADEMIC PROGRAMME The college fers doctoral, masters, bachelor degree programme, postgraduate diploma in postharvest technology and two year Diploma in Horticulture. STUDENT STENGTH During , the college admitted 43 M.Sc. and 15 Ph.D.. students for various departments. The college at present has total student strength at 142 with 95 boys and 47 girls. The number diploma students in horticulture is 20 with 14 boys and 6 girls. There are 11 Afghanistan National students, one Syrian and one Maldives student pursuing master s and doctoral degree programs at the campus. Over 50 students have obtained their degrees from the campus so far. Discipline-wise student strength during COLLABORATIVE ARRANGEMENTS
7 The College Horticulture, Bengaluru is functioning in close collaboration with UAS, Bengaluru and IIHR, Hessarghatta for fering courses and guiding students in order to bridge inadequacies in the formative stages the college. The state department horticulture is also supporting the college in several ways particularly by providing facilities at Biotechnology centre, Hulimavu as well as at Lalbagh. 8. RESOURCES The campus is spread over an area 125 acres. The entire campus has been developed on watershed basis. The campus is provided with BWSSB water facility as well as high tension electricity line for 24x7 uninterrupted power supply. The roads leading to the college and RHREC are metalled with avenues along side. COH, Bengaluru campus entrance The college building A two storey building with a plinth area 4300 m 2 is near to completion The building has at present six well furnished class rooms with audio-visual aids for effective teaching.. To conduct seminars, workshops, conference and meetings a multipurpose hall with a seating capacity around 100 has been established with podium, LCD projector and audio system. A molecular biology and biotechnology laboratory with required facility is being setup. A fully-fledged computer lab with 40 computers with secured internet facility is being set up for students. Each discipline is being provided with separate space to accommodate their staffs with required facilities. RHREC building
8 With a plinth area around 180 m 2 the RHREC houses soil science laboratory, class-room cum meeting hall and staff chambers. Postharvest technology building The postharvest technology laboratory with advanced instruments and facilities has been recently established with the funding from NMFP & RKVY. The building with a plinth area around 200 m 2 houses staff chambers, laboratory and a meeting-cum-class room. Hostel buildings Nandi the boy s hostel at the campus started functioning since September The hostel with a plinth area 610m 2 has 42 rooms and is well equipped with a kitchen, a dining hall 60 students capacity, solar water heating system, four utility rooms and a sports ground. Similar facilities with 27 rooms and CCTV facility has been established at Mandara the girl s hostel with a plinth area 330 m 2. Both the buildings have full-fledged security, compound wall with barbed wire on top as a safety measure. Nandi, boys hostel Mandara, girls hostel Other infrastructure facilities Research facilities Postharvest technology laboratory The RHREC the campus with a cropped area 50 acres has dedicated research plots and developed mother orchards major fruit crops for research and development, core-germplasm sets major fruits, flowers and ornamental plants both under protected and field conditions, plant nursery for production quality planting material major horticulture crops for supply to needy farmers at reasonable cost. The entire farm is solely developed on watershed basis. The nursery area with an orchidarium, shade-net and polyhouses have been established for
9 undertaking research on protected cultivation. Apart from RHREC facility, the college has also created field facilities allocated to staff and students for teaching & research purpose. Collaborative arrangement with IIHR, state Department Horticulture, Hulimavu and Lalbagh, Bengaluru is handy to students and faculty to conduct research on biotechnology, crop improvement and other disciplines. Shadenets and polyhouses Protected cultivation anthurium The farm has adopted Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) to demonstrate dry land horticultural technologies with establishment high density mango, cashew and guava plots on four hectare land. The college has nine externally funded projects as now. Laboratory facilities College is having well established laboratories in disciplines like Biotechnology and Crop improvement, Postharvest Technology, Plant Pathology and Soil Science and Agriculture chemistry. Overall, more than 300 different equipments are available across different departments the college to carry out laboratory studies and analysis. Library & e-resources Library is important in spreading the literacy and inculcating the reading habits among large section population. There is a popular slogan the nation that reads, the nation that leads. Recognising the importance library and usefulness, COH, Bengaluru has humbly started establishing library acquiring books and periodicals which are relevant to PG programmes. E- resources facility is also being built in the campus. Important research journals are made available online (CeRA, BioMed and CAB) to the staff and students the college. Sports facilities A 400 m track along with Foot ball/hockey/cricket/basket ball/volley ball and Kho-Kho play grounds are being developed. Indoor games hall including gymnasium are also being established for students as part extra-curricular activities. The facilities created have helped student s the college to win laurels at various sports meets like inter-collegiate and youth festivals held at various places and a few students the campus have represented our University at all India level meets.
10 Extension facilities Horticulture Extension Education Unit, HEEU, at College Horticulture, Bengaluru was started during with the objectives spreading latest technologies to farmers and public-private organizations; technology assessment, validation, demonstration and popularisation; training & consultancy for various stakeholders; farmers and in particular farm women empowerment; start farmer s field school; and facilitate formation crop specific farmer s groups/commodity groups.
