10 th Annual Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop Renaissance Hotel Oklahoma City, Oklahoma September 16-19, 2014 Runtimes for Deviated Rod Pump Wells in the Fruitland Coal Formation Elizabeth Kane, ConocoPhillips Cole Maxey, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology
Agenda Update on Runtimes Review of Historical Failures Case Study From a Recent Repair Conclusions 2014 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 2
San Juan Basin Mature natural gas basin Most productive coalbed methane basin in North America ConocoPhillips operates ~1,200 wells on rod pump (89% are Fruitland Coal completions) Most coal wells are dewatered and currently produce <5 BWPD 2014 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 3
Background 54 S shaped wells 5 horizontal wells with the pump in the curve or lateral Tracking and reporting sideload vs runtime First presented in September 2011 Expanded to include all deviated wells and historical failures Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 4
Data Collection and Uncertainty Runtime is adjusted for extended downtime based on historical production Runtime cannot be adjusted for daily downtime resulting from the use of pump off controllers The effect of pumping speed on maximum sideload is minimal 2014 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 5
Maximum Sideload (lbf) Current Runtimes of Deviated Wells Adjusted Runtime (years) S Well Horizontal Well 2014 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 6
Well Count Current Runtimes of Deviated Wells Adjusted Runtime 8-15 years 4-8 years < 4 years 75% of the wells have a sideload of lbf 43% of the wells have run >4 years, regardless of sideload < >400 Maximum Sideload (lbf) 2014 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 7
Wear Failure History Many deviated wells have very good runtimes and are still currently running Average failure rate on rod pumped deviated wells from is < 0.1 failures/well/year A review of wear failures showed much shorter runtimes historically than most deviated wells are achieving today 2014 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 8
Wear Failures of Deviated Wells Unguided Guided Guides are needed at >30 lbf sideload Guides can potentially double runtime 9
REVIEW OF RECENT S WELL REPAIR 2014 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 10
True Vertical Depth (ft.) Well Information S well 4 year adjusted run life with ~430 lbf maximum sideload Guided string with sinker bars in the slant section 7/8 rods, 10 guides per rod 3/4 rods, 5 guides per rod Wellbore Profile 7/8 rods, 10 guides per rod 3/4 rods, 5 guides per rod Sinker bars 3/4 rods, 5 guides per rod Horizontal Travel (ft.) Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 11
Data Collection Measured 5 guides per rod and all couplings 2 guide diameter measurements per guide 1 coupling diameter measurement across the most worn section Measured the height of each wing from the base of the rod guide on 1 guide per rod Result is ~3,100 measurements allowing a detailed wear profile to be created and analyzed 2014 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 12
Data Collection measurements per guide on 5 guides per rod 4 measurements per guide on 1 guide per rod 2 Total Guide Loss = (Original Diameter Measured Diameter) Asymmetrical Wear Ratio = Max Guide Height / Min Guide Height 2014 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 13
Other Data and Missing Data Other Data: Tubing inspection identifying rod wear and corrosion Deviation survey Missing Data: Daily runtime Rod rotator time in use 2014 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 14
Measured Depth (ft) Measured Depth (ft) Tubing Inspection Total Guide Loss per Rod (in) Asymmetrical Wear Ratio SINKER BARS 15
Sideload vs. Guide Wear Increased wear at low sideloads in the slant section 2014 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 16
Conclusions For shallow gas wells, >4 year runtimes can be expected in deviated wells with up to 430 lbf sideload when rod guides are used Rod guides should be used when sideloads exceed 30 lbf/rod Sinker bars in the slant or curve sections can lead to excessive wear and may contribute to failures in guided sections In one well, the slant section showed increased wear at lower sideloads than the 2 curve sections 2014 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 17
