1 # 01 Abelia, Sunburst (Abelia sp.). Semi- evergreen shrub with small leaves. Prune to shape. Attracts birds, butterflies, and bees. Plant in sun to part shade, well-drained soil. Drought tolerant once established. #02 Abutilon, Biltmore Ball Gown (Abutilon Biltmore Ballgown ) Evergreen shrub with dangling, tigerstriped blooms from summer through fall. Prune to shape in spring. Requires morning sun to part shade, welldrained soil. Attracts bees, butterfies and hummingbirds. Grows 4 tall. Hardy to the 30 s #03 Ageratum, Blue Mist (Eupatorium coelestinum) Valuable for hardiness and adaptability with a display of fluffy autumn leaves. Blooms clusters of fuzzy, blue flowers in fall. Grows in practically any soil or exposure, but does best with at least a half day of direct sunlight. Grows 2-3 tall. Texas Native! #04 Ajuga, Catlin s Giant (Ajuga reptanas Catlin s Giant) Herbacious perennial 1ft. tall by 2ft. wide. Great groundcover with blue blooms in April to May; provide good air and circulation and divide plants if they become overcrowded. Plant in morning sun to part shade conditions, low water needs. #05 Alocasia, Dark Star (Alocasia Dark Star ) Low maintenance perennial known as Elephant Ear. Grows best in part shade in most, rich soils. Water and fertilize regularly. Plants feature heart to arrowhead-shaped, veined leaves 2-3 long with stout succulent stems. Grows 6 tall. #06 Alocasia, Frydek (Alocasia Frydek ) Elephant Ear Deep green, velvety leaves with bold white veins. Provides a lush, tropical effect indoors or outdoors near a pond, in a container or on a patio or deck. Evergreen. Plant in full sun to part shade, well drained, moist soil. #07 Aloe, Grey Elf (Aloe x Blue Elf ) Narrow silver-blue leaves provide a striking contrast to the orange-red flowers that bloom from January through April. Water deeply once a month in the summer and once every three weeks in spring and fall. Full sun to light shade, drought tolerant once established #08 Aloe, Peach (miniature) (Aloe Pink Blush )) If grown in pots, use succulent potting mix, let dry out between watering. Protect from frost, drought tolerant, morning sun to part shade, well-drained soil outdoors or indirect light indoors #09 Azalea, Hampton Beauty (Rhododendron Hampton Beauty ). Evergreen variety with a compact habit. Offers oval, lush green leaves. Easy to grow. 5 x 5 foot tall and wide; slow growing shrub. Plant in part sun, filtered shade, or morning sun. Well drained, moist soil. #10 Azalea, Midnight Flare (Rhododendron 'Midnight Flare ). Stunning clusters of tomato-orange trumpetshaped flowers at the ends of the branches in mid spring. 2 #11 Azalea, Purple Formosa (Rhododendron indicum Formosa ) Large flowers in a range from soft lavender to pink to magenta to purple, and bloom in Spring. Commonly used for mass plantings, specimens, or hedges. Plant in full sun, well-drained, fertile soil. Grows 7-10 tall and wide within 6 years. #12 Banana Plant, Zebrina Rojo (Musa sumatrana Zebrina) Grown for ornamental use. 5-8 tall; wind and cold resistant, well adapted to container growing and can be kept at 3-5 tall. Leaves have green and red mottling on the top leaves and solid maroon coloring on bottom. Plant in full to part sun, well drained soil. #13 Banana Shrub (Michelia figo). Fragrant, creamy-yellow blooms shaded with purple have a banana-like scent. Compact densely branched shrub displays narrow, glossy leaves. Use near the front of borders, so fragrance can be enjoyed. Slow growing to 6 to 10 ft. tall and wide. Needs regular watering - weekly, or more often in extreme heat. #14 Barbados Cherry, Dwarf (Malpighia glabra) Unique and colorful native shrub with pink and white flowers summer and fall, and then producing an abundance of red, cherry-like fruit! Evergreen most winters. The dwarf variety makes a 3-4 shrub. Sun, part shade. Texas Native. #15 Beautyberry, (Callicarpa americana) Native, deciduous shrub for late summer & fall color. Clusters of berries form on arching stems in late summer. Showiest after the leaves drop in late fall. Needs understory conditions, best in part shade. Average 5-6. Prune in late winter for a fuller, lusher plant. Medium water needs. #16 Beautyberry, American White (Callicarpa japonica Leucocarpa ) This is an outstanding 6-8 foot deciduous shrub with an open, arching form. Spring brings tiny white flowers borne in clusters along the leaf axils. In the fall, milky, white berries appear in tight clusters. These berries seem to glow in the dark making this plant a great addition to moon gardens. These berries remain long into winter, and are eaten by several species of birds. Full sun to dappled shade. Drought tolerant once established. **** Begonia, Angel Wing Begonia 'Frosty' (Begonia x Hiemalis Sophia ). Compact tender cane perennial can grow up to 24. Plant in shade with well-drained soil. Great for containers. ****Begonia, Angel Wing Begonia Lana (Begonia Lana ). Cane variety grows up to 24 Great for containers. Greyish green variegation runs the whole width and breadth of the wings. Grow in partial sun to shade, keep soil moist but well-drained. **** Begonia, Angel Wing Begonia 'Sophia' (Begonia x Hiemalis Sophia ). Compact tender cane perennial can grow up to 24. 3 #17 Bidens, Pink (Bidens ferulifoia) Pink daily-like blooms appear for weeks; easy to care for. Plant in full to part sun, well-drained soil. Drought tolerant once established #18 Blue Stars (Aristea eklonii) Evergreen perennial with small blue flowers growing in clumps with grasslike leaves. Grows tall. Plant in full sun; well grained soil; average water needs. #19 Bottlebrush, Hardy Pink (Callistemon viminalis Neon Pink ) Fast-growing evergreen shrub to 5-6 tall and wide. Pink blooms in spring thru fall;compact size, can grow in containers. Plant in full sun, well-drained soil. Drought tolerant once established. Attracts bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. **** Bougainvillea. Vigorous evergreen vine with vibrant bracts surrounding tiny white tubular flowers. Flowers periodically throughout the year in warmer areas with a heavier bloom in winter. Plant in full sun, drought tolerant once established. A variety of colors will be available plus the named varieties below. #20 Bromeliad, Matchstick (Aechmea gamosepala). This winter blooming bromeliad comes from Brazil. Its blooms are thick bristles of purplish-pink bracts tipped with iridescent blue bead-like flowers. After flowering, the spike turns dark pink and holds for weeks. It will grow in shady corners or even places where there is hardly any soil. It can form an attractive, low-maintenance groundcover as it multiplies very well. Tolerates mild frosts beautifully! Being epiphytic, it can also be grown in the fork of a tree. This is one tough bromeliad! #21 Bromeliad, Queen s Tears (Bilbergia nutans) Easy to grow, forms clumps of narrow bronzy-green rosettes. Flower stalks from in spring and has pink bracts and pendent flowers with chartreuse petals edged with royal blue. Plant in shade in a well-drained, organic rich soil-or indoors in bright, indirect light; hardy to 32 degrees #22 Brunfelsia, Lady of the Night (Brunfelsia americana) Highly fragrant South American shrub with cream-white, 2 flowers. Slow growing, it will bloom within a year from a young plant. Makes a great potted plant with low mounding habitat. If space is limited, grow as a hanging basket. This strong grower is east to over winter as a houseplant in the sunlit window. Full sun to part shade #23 Brunfelsia, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (Brunsfelsia floribunda). Slow growing deciduous 4'x4' shrub with dramatic and fragrant blooms. Morning sun or filtered sun is best. Flowers open rich purple, fade to mauve and then fade to white over a few days; hence, its nickname. Butterflies! Blooms for an extended period all spring. #24 Buddleia, Butterfly Bush-Griffin s Blue (Buddleia davidii. Griffins Blue) Rich dark blue blooms with tangerine colored eyes. Large blooms, prolific. This variety grows 5-6 tall and wide. Great fragrance and rich in nectar for bees, butterflies and other insects. Plant in full sun, well-drained soil. Perennials Page 3

4 #25 Buddleia (Buddleja lindleyana) Small, dense shrub unlike the Buddeia davidii varieties. Cascading growth habit with dark leaves and lavender flowers produced on spikes 2 long. Plant in full to part sun, well drained soil. Tends to sucker, but reported to be easily removed. Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and bees. #26 Buttonbush, (Cephalanthus occidentalis) Native, deciduous shrub or small tree (10-18 ), can take bog conditions. SUN, Large, unusual fragrant, white flowers. BUTTERFLIES! #27 Camellia, Leslie Ann (Camellia sasanqua). Evergreen shrub with glossy, thin but leathery, elliptical, dark green leaves with toothed margins. The plants have a dense, upright habit and are of medium height. Flowers are white with dark rose to magenta edges and are semi-double with many gold stamens. When mature, reaches a height of 4 10 and a width of 4 8. #28 Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) Clump-forming habit with brilliant red flower spikes set against green and purple-bronze colored foliage. Each individual spike of scarlet flowers open from bottom to top and stays in bloom for several weeks. A favorite of hummingbirds. Makes an excellent cut flower. A real show stopper! #29 Carnation of India (Tabernaemontana divaricata )Sub-tropical, evergreen shrub that does great in our clay soil. Fragrant, white blooms throughout the warm season; grows 5 ft tall and wide. Plant in morning sun, well-drained, fertile soil. Great for containers #30 Catchfly (Silene subcilliata) Erect plant, growing 1-3 tall. Plant in partial sun, well-drained soil. A rare, native clump-forming perennial that seems to be well suited to average garden soils. Flowering typically starts in late July and can alst into October. #31 Cereus, Hot Pink Cereus (Cereus sp) Pink flowers open after dark and stay open all night, closing with the sunrise. Fragrant blooms appear intermittently during the summer months. Do not allow this plant to go below 35 degrees F. Best grown in pots in our area. Put in morning sun to part shade conditions; average water needs. #32 Cherokee Sedge-Grass (Carex cherokeensis) Evergreen clump-forming sedge with pendulous flower and seed stalks in late Spring. Tolerates average soils. Looks great in a naturalized setting, but it s form also excels in more traditional planting scenes. Plant in full to part shade, well-drained soil. Deer resistant. #33 Chrysanthemum, Country Girl (Chysanthemum sp Country Girl ) A tough garden chrysanthemum that takes our heat and humidity. Slowly colonizes a corner of the garden an explodes with 2-3 pale pink Shasta Daisy-like flowers in the Fall. It averages tall when in bloom. Full sun or part shade. 5 #34 Coneflower, Giant (Rudbeckia maxima) Perennial is easily grown in average, moist, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates heat, some drought once established. Grows in clumps of large, bluish=green leaves with sparsely-leaved flower stalks. Bloom appearance is yellow rays surrounding a dark brown center cone. Grows 5-7 tall and spreads 3-4 wide #35 Copper Canyon Daisy (Tagetes lemonii) A medium sized, wonderfully textured, aromatic shrubby perennial that explodes with bright golden-yellow flowers in the fall, and in a mild winter, will continue to bloom all the way into spring! It grows 3 tall by 3-4 wide. Drought tolerant once established. Sun, good drainage. Butterflies! #36 Coreopsis, Broad Street (Coreopsis verticillata 'Cruizin Broad Street ). Forms compact mounds of narrow thread leaf foliage. Bright orange-red flowers bloom all summer till frost, very fast growing. Plant in full sun, well-drained soil. Drought-tolerant, attracts butterflies, and deer resistant #37 Crepe Myrtle, White on Black (Lagerstromia black diamond series ) A new series of Crepe Myrtles with brilliant blooms and flawless foliage. Their compact growth habit makes attractive flowering hedges or beautiful trees to line you driveway or fence. Black Diamonds are also perfect for planting in decorative pots to place on your deck, porch or balcony. #38 Crown of Thorns-Orange (Euphorbia milli) Woody, succulent shrub that features fleshy bright green with orange blooms in clusters. 6 Desert Rose (Adenium obesum) Popular houseplant and bonsai. Requires a sunny location and a minimum indoor temperature in winter of 50. These are available at the PLUMERIA TABLE. #44 Duranta, Sweet Memory (Duranta repens) This fabulous, long-blooming, root hardy plant forms a large, full shrub or small tree and is covered with tight clusters of small purple flowers with a white edging in heavy bloom cycles late spring through fall. It also produces dangling clusters of yellow berries. A much for any butterfly garden!!! Prefers full sun but will take light shad. Tough Texas Superstar #45 Dutchman s Pipe, White Veined Hardy (Aristolochia fimbrata) Vigorous, attractive vine with spectacular, large 8 ivory-mottled maroon flowers. Beautiful heart-shaped foliage. Sun, part shade #46 Easter Lily Vine (Beaumontia grandiflora) Vigorous evergreen climber that reaches up to 30 tall. Large leaves up to 9 long. Fragrant, white trumpet-like blooms in late spring to early fall. Plant in full sun to light shade in rich soil, average water needs. Cold hard to 28 degrees, dislikes heavy, wet soil in winter. If pruning is required, do so just after flowering to promote new flowering wood for following year. #47 Eve s Necklace (Sophora affins) Native, North American, deciduous tree which grows moderately fast to 35 feet tall and 20 feet wide. Produces fragran, white with pink blossoms which appear in June in dense, 2-6 long racemes, somewhat like Wisteria. Grow in full sun to part shade. Well-drained soil. Drought tolerant once established. **** Fern, Birds Nest (Asplenium nidus). Best kept between 70 and 80 degrees, with high humidity. Requires loose, rich moist soil. Filtered light to light shade. #48 Fern, Cemetery (Pteris vittatus) aka Chinese Ladder Brake. Grows tall; grows well with humidity, indoors and outdoors. Drought tolerant. Plant in full sun to full shade; requires consistently moist soil. #49 Fern, Christmas (Polystichum acrostichoides) Grows in a fountain-like clump and features leathery, lance-shaped, evergreen fronds. Requires part or full shade; well-drained soil; rich in organic matter. Drought tolerant once established. Grows 2 tall. #50 Fern, Dixie Wood (Dryopteris x Austalis) This fern has an erect, tall 4-5 habit with spectacular wide, dark-green fronds on a wide clump. Plant 4 apart. Makes a bold statement in the shady or woodland garden. Mass as a backdrop for other shade loving plants. Can tolerate dry sites, but performs best in moist soil. **** Fern, Lemon Button (Nephrolepis cordifolia Lemon Buttons ). Compact leaflets on dark green stems; 12 tall. Typically grows in clumps to 2-3 tall, but with constant moisture can reach 6 in height. #52 Firetail Chenille (Acalphya hispida) This chenille plant reaches 4-6 tall by 6-8 wide. Full sun to partial shade, moist, well drained soil. Commonly used as an accent, hedge, specimen or container plant. #53 Fringe Tree (Chioanthus virginicus) Deciduous shrub or small tree grows as much as 36 ft tall. Plant in averge, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Prefers moist, fertile soils. Seldom needs pruning. Not tolerant to prolonged dry conditions. #54 Gardenia, Klein s Hardy (Gardenia jasminoides ) The hardiest of the Gardenias in a versatile, dwarf size. Great in containers, raised beds and in the foreground of borders. Flowers are star-like with five petals. Evergreen. #55 Gayfeather (Liatris pycnostachya) A striking, architectural, native perennial with multiple 3-4 tall, elegant, bottle-brush looking flower stalks covered with frilly, rosy-purple flowers during the summer. It s a hardy native once established. Prefers full sun and a moist, well-drained soil, Butterflies! Texas Native. **** Geranium, Calliope (Pelargonium x interspecific). Display of deep red blooms that raise above green foliage. Good tolerance to hot, wet summertime weather. Plant in full to part sun in well-drained soil. **** Geranium Patriot Series (Pelargonium sp.) Tender perennial with fragrant leaves and colorful flowers. Good tolerance to hot, wet summer weather. Plant in full to partial sun in well-drained soil. ****'Americana Salmon' **** 'White' ****'Cherry Rose' ****'Lavender Blue' **** Geranium, Rocky Mountain Violet (Pelargonium Zonale 'Rocky Mountain Violet'). Strong, vigorous plants with large flower. Ideal for larger pot sizes and mixed containers. Plant in full sun to part shade in welldrained soil. #56 Giant Pipe Vine (Aristolochia gigantea) Vigorous vine with 8 ivory, mottled maroon flowers and large, heart-shaped leaves. Blooms from spring to fall. Plant in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil. #57 Hardy Ice Plant (Delospermum cooperi) Daisy-like, bright red-purple flowers (to 2 diameter) cover the plant with bloom from June to September. 8 #58 Hummingbird Bush (Anisacanthus wrightii) Two-inch long, bright red or orange flowers which bloom from Spring to late Fall. A favorite of hummingbirds. Heavy pruning in the early spring helps to control the tall (3-4 ) spindly nature of the growth pattern. It needs FULL SUN and very good drainage. It is root hardy through severe winters #59 Hydrangea, Oak Leaf (Hydrangea quercifolia)a dramatic, white-blooming shrub with strong ascending branches and dramatic oak-like foliage which turns red-purple in fall. Large, open clusters of creamy-white flowers produced above the foliage in May and June, slowly turning pinkish in color. Exfoliating bark on older branches. This is a very thirst plant, so be diligent with your watering. Can grow 6-8 tall. Needs afternoon shade. #60 Hydrangea, Oregon Pride (Hydrangea macrophylla Oregon Pride ) Distinctive variety with dark stems and large, deep violet mopheads (globose flower clusters). A vigorous upright plant grows 5-6 tall and wide. Blooms in Summer. Plant in part shade, rich, moist, well-drained soil. #61 Hydrangea, Pia (Hydrangea macrophylla Pia ) Dwarf mophead cultivar (globose flower clusters) that typically grows in a mound 2-3 tall by 2-3 wide and features pink flowers. Blooms in Summer. #62 Indian Pink (Spigelia marilandica) Great native perennial; summer flowers are brilliant red and tubular with canary yellow throats. Attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Part shade to full shade, well-drained soil; drought tolerant once established #63 Inland Sea Oats-Grass (Chasmanthium latifolium) 2-4 clump forming, perennial grass with drooping, oat-like flower spikelets from slender, arching branches. The blue-green, bamboo-like leaves often turn a bright, yellow-gold, especially in sunnier sites in Fall. Plant in shade to partial shade in moist soil. After flowering, this plant makes may pups with air roots to be replanted, or allow them to replant themselves #66 Jasmine, Snow in Summer (Trachelospermum asiaticum)pink and white new leaves continually emerge over green older leaves. An evergreen groundcover that reaches 8-10 tall by inches wide. The pink and white new growth is most intense in full sun. Plant in full sun to partial shade, well-drained soil. Attracts hummingbirds. #68 Louisiana Iris (Iris brevicaulis) Showy blue flowers; also known as Zig Zag Iris; full sun to part shade; bloom time June; suitable for bogs and water gardens; inches tall #69 Louisiana Iris, Black Gamecock (Iris black gamecock ) A blue-black self with a narrow gold line signal. Performs well in cold and warm climates and possibly is the most widely grown Louisiana iris in the country. Increases rapidly #70 Lemon Sherbet Shrimp Plant, (Justica Lemon Sorbet ) A shrimp plant with a new delicious color! It produces 4-6 shrimp-shaped spikes of overlapping pastel lemon-yellow bracts with a tubular flowers on a 3 mound of soft, apple green leaves. This tough attractive plant is an extremely long bloomer, responds well to pruning, and is root hardy in the Houston/Gulf Coast area. It grows in sun or light shade and a moist, welldrained soil. Hummingbirds!! #71 Ligularia, Giant (Farfugium japonicam Giganteum ) Evergreen perennial for shade. Large, dark green, glossy, round leaves. A tropical looking accent that grows into a 3 clump. Blooms with clusters of yellow daisylike flowers on 4 stalks in the fall. Shade. Best in moist, well-drained soil. #72 Lily, African Blood Lily (Scadoxis multifloris) Beautiful 7-8 globe-like flower head erupts in early summer consisting of hundreds of tiny florets, followed by green, glossy, spear-shaped foliage. Plant in full sun to part shade, well-drained, moist, fertile soil #73 Lily, Red Surprise (Lycrocis radiate) Small, narrow leaves lie dormant in spring. In August, 15 inch tall spikes emerge topped with an azalea-like flower of bright red. Leaves every after flower spends and persists until spring. Over a 2-3 day period, the flowers open white, change to pink, then to bright red. Sun. Fairly drought tolerant once established. Very fragrant. Perennials Page 11

Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. #94 Rose, Peggy Martin/Katrina Rose (Rosa 'Peggy Martin'). This is the incredible rose that survived Hurricane Katrina, continuing to live in the salt water flooded yard of Peggy Martin in Plaquemines Parish, near New Orleans. Long arching canes give this rose a graceful rambling form and clusters of showy, bright pink flowers make it a stunning accent in any garden. Covered with clusters of flowers each spring from mid- March through May, it starts blooming again in late summer and repeat blooms until a frost slows it down in winter. Thornless and disease resistant. Full sun. Moist, well drained soil. #95 Salvia, Indigo Spires (Salvia sp Indigo Spires ) A large 3-4 salvia that is almost constantly blooming long, dark-blue spikes of flowers. Responds well to pruning.
