December Program Bonsai Journalism and Photography Accurate bonsai record keeping is an important tool for improving the care of your trees. How many of you can recall when, where or from whom, you obtained every one of your trees...or when they each were last repotted, fertilized or treated for diseases...or even how their appearance has changed over the years??? If youcan#t accurately answer all these questions, there is no need for this to continue. Come hear Dave and Garrett's lighthearted tag-team presentation about the importance of record keeping, and suggestions for how to start an ongoingwritten and photographic record of your collection. Tips for improving your photographic technique will also be included. BSD Shopping Trip to Dallas Bonsai by Sylvia Smith Our annual shopping trip to Fred Meyer#s "Dallas Bonsai" store in Garland, Texas will take place on Saturday, January 12, BSD is grateful to Fred for opening his warehouse especially for us on that day. In addition to his great prices you will save more as a club member in good standing, so please remember to renew your membership for 2013 before we go on this trip Because Dallas Bonsai is setup as a warehouse for mail order fulfillment, we ask all those who plan to attend to review his on-line catalog. Everyone should have a list of the inventory they want to purchase along with it's item number and price (the price for your records as it will not reflect your discount). Images are helpful but not required. As most of you know, there isn't much room to move around here and nothing is priced. Fred asks for this list to make it easier to find what you need and avoid having to look up a ton of prices. If you happen to come across a gem among the stacks and stacks of boxes, by all means ask for a price or look it up on your smartphone You can speak with Fred at (800) Monday thought Friday from 1PM to 5PM if you have any questions. Start your list now by logging on to his website Remember you will need supplies for the Bonsai Smiths repotting workshop in February so keep that special pot in mind. Here is the Smith's recommended list of tools: General Bonsai Tool Basics: concave cutters, sharp scissors for brach trimming, wire cutters, aluminum wire gages 2.0, 2.5, & 3.0 (for deciduous trees, evergreens and tropicals), and copper wire gages 16, 14, & 12 (for all conifers). Larger gages may be needed for those who have larger trees. Repotting Tools: bent nose tweezers, single prong rake (or chop stick), a sickle (preferably serrated), wire cutters (you only need one of these for all bonsai work), root scissors for root pruning only, pliers, root cutters and good bonsai soil. (5 1/2" Hemp Broom is optional) Bonsai Soil: We recommend a mix of Akadama, pumice and lava. Equal parts for conifers and 1/2 Akadma to 1/4 part pumic and 1/4 part lava for tropicals and deciduous trees Join us Saturday, January 12th from 9am to noon, "Dallas Bonsai" 4460 West Walnut Street Garland, TX Come prepared with your list and your holiday money to save Fred Meyer hopes to see you all there page 2

November Program Recap Divide and Conquer by Mary Polk They went and did it again. Yes, after Chuck opened the meeting with his great enthusiasm, and after all announcements were made, introductions, etc the Bonsai Smiths did their thing. Howard and Sylvia stepped to the front of the room, Sylvia started trying to draw and write on a very wobbly easel and, of course, her Prince Charming Howard graciously tried to remedy the situation. Finally, no problem they began their program and all in attendance (we wound up with 33 people in the room great turnout) began listening intently to garner information and be educated by Howard and Sylvia. What can we say other than how lucky the Club is to have such talent within our group. They gave a lot of hints on Preparing for Winter. Bear with me, I will TRY to summarize but you need to know I have problems reading my own writing and I have little memory so my scribbling just COULD be wrong: EVERGREEN/DECIIDUOUS: Boxwood, Azalea, Oaks. Note: On azaleas, thin out leaf clusters to two and snip off any buds are to be kept outside in Winter. Deciduous plants need to have the top 1 soil replaced with fresh bonsai soil as well as leaves removed and can tolerate light trimming. CONIFERS: Junipers and Pines are to be kept outside in Winter. Conifers (like cone-bearing Junipers and Pines) need to have the top 1 soil changed out for fresh soil, can be pruned a bit, and can be wired (if you do put on fresh wire, be sure to keep plant from freezing.) TROPICAL plants should be wintered inside the garage with good lighting or in a greenhouse TOPSOIL CHANGE FOR WINTER: Use bent-nose tweezers and brush and tenderly scrape from center of tree outward to edge of put, digging down1/2 1 to remove old soil and debris. Add fresh bonsai soil and press in with offset spatula gently. WINTER STRUCTURES: Greenhouses and benches (you should put certain plants on the warmer ground in cold winter and cover the pots to edge with leaves or compost to protect the plants from freezing. Peanut Gallery Suggestion: Add a little fertilizer to the surrounding leaves to create compost and warmth. WINTER TREATMENTS: Evergreens and Conifers need light feeding. Deciduous trees need to go dormant. Be sure to keep all plant soil moist (but not soggy wet) in Winter. The individual hands-on workshop by Howard and Sylvia got started. The room was divided in half one side for Howard and one side for Sylvia and the noise level peaked as each was working with the great people who brought in their trees (maybe trees.) One had to listen very hard to hear either Howard or Sylvia, but I am sure every person who brought a tree was thankful for the direction in which they were led by the Smiths. The Smiths then changed sides for further direction and counsel for each plant brought in. There were a few trees that needed to wait until Spring for work and such but no one went home with their tree without an idea of what to do next for their special bonsai tree. At this time, I would like to officially APOLOGIZE if I did not get my facts straight on what the Smiths said. SORRY if what they said is not what I wrote down and what is above is WRONG. I am no expert and, in fact, make a ton of mistakes most likely on my own plants. So, follow your own instincts and do not rely on what this green-horn has reported above on what SHE thought the Smiths said Good Luck, Y#all page 3

Convention Chronicle #4 Tree Ring Circus **April 11-14, 2013 New Braunfels, Texas** I'd like to tell everyone about our visiting artists for Convention. The Tree Ring Circus as it has been dubbed has three major headliners. Walter Pall from Germany has been practicing Bonsai for over 30 years. He has advanced the ideas of a naturalistic form when styling Bonsai and also a holistic approach to the eternal struggle with fertilizer, soil substrate and watering. Walter's discussions are always lively and entertaining. Colin Lewis originally from England, now living in Maine has been involved with Bonsai for almost 40 years and is the famous author of many Bonsai books including the fantastic Art of Bonsai Design which should be a must-read for all enthusiasts. Colin believes that Bonsai as an art form here should reflect the Western ideals we have and not just be a copy of another culture's aesthetics. Erik Wigert from Florida has become an energetic voice representing a new wave of skilled Bonsai artists. Erik specializes in tropical species and is well versed on their care and culture. His is a name that will only grow in the coming years. In addition to the visiting artists, we will have programs by our local talent here in Texas. After all, we need to represent and appreciate our own masters. Among those scheduled to teach at the 2013 Convention: Terry Ward, Chuck Ware, Sheila Ward, Yvonne Padilla, Donna Dobberfuhl.& Alisan Clarke. So save the date and come to enjoy the Bonsai camaraderie Joey McCoy Convention Chair page 5

December Bonsai Tips and advice by John Miller With the holidays approaching, why don#t you give bonsai a present this year? The Texas State Bonsai Exhibit is progressing but could go a lot faster with more donations. Send a check to The Texas State Bonsai Exhibit, Inc/13450 N. Highway 183, Suite #116/ Austin, TX Find full details on the web at Usually not too much has to be done right now. That is if you prepared last month and you have no tropicals inside to care for. The big thing is to know what temperatures your trees can withstand and to remember that water is very important in the winter time. If you did not get your pines and junipers taken care of last month, do it quickly. Since the trees are not using as much water during dormancy it is easy to overlook checking on them. The low humidity usually found during winter helps dry the soil. Winter sun can be pretty hot and if it shines directly on the pot it will hasten the drying process. Winter will usually also be more windy. Therefore, however you bed down the trees, you need to check the dryness often. The same trees that needed more water last summer will also need to be checked more often during the winter. I think that more trees are lost during the winter to having the soil dry out than from the actual cold. Deciduous trees should not be placed where they receive winter sun. After a period of dormancy, the heating of the tree could possibly cause it to break dormancy prematurely. If that happened you would need to keep it above freezing the rest of the winter. After they go dormant they have no need for any sunshine. Evergreen types especially, and deciduous to a lesser extent, should not have the root ball subjected to alternate freezing and thawing. That process tends to tear and damage the roots. Placing the trees on the ground and using mulch will minimize this problem. Plants have different degrees of hardiness for their top growth and their roots. The reason being that the ground acts as a large reservoir of heat, and here in Texas seldom freezes more than an inch or two down. Therefore plants like the pomegranate and crepe myrtle, which are at the northern extent of their range, will only be hardy to 32 degrees in pots. Any plant that you are unsure of should be protected from freezing. This can be a problem because if they are not kept cool after they go dormant they will break dormancy and start to grow too soon. Growing without sufficient light causes long spindly growth which you cannot control. My best solution for this when I lived in town was to have a long platform with two wheels that I pulled into the garage on nights where freezing was forecast and kept outside at all other times. The cold weather will keep any insect problems under control outside. You should use a dormant oil spray to kill over-wintering insets and eggs. A dilute spray of lime-sulfur can be used on deciduous trees if they have no green at all which will also control fungal spores but be sure to follow label directions carefully. You should watch for damage from rodent types - rabbits, squirrel, and rats. They will seriously prune branches and strip bark in short order. Bonsai in greenhouses or indoor bonsai will need to be watched for the normal indoor problems. Low humidity, spider mites and scale are the biggest problems here. Trying to keep the humidity up by placing your trees on a humidity tray can possibly give you some soil problems, root rot or some other fungal disease. I use the same controls in the greenhouse that I use outside all year. You can take advantage of the winter slow down by spending your time getting pots ready for spring, clean and sharpen your tools, study what changes you would like to make on your trees and so forth. Making notes about what needs to be done on an individual tree is great but if you are like me the notes and trees are usually a long way apart. If you place a colored stake or ribbon on the tree you will see instantly which one needs what done. For example, I am using red for needs repotting, purple - needs a new pot, yellow - serious pruning, orange - should be restyled, etc. These can be put on during the year if you make that kind of decision as you are doing general routine work. Be sure to mark your calendar for the LSBF convention in April next year. It will be held in New page 6

December Bonsai continued from page 5 Tips and advice by John Miller Braunfels on April Registration forms and info will be available on the website ( Headliners will be Walter Pall, Colin Lewis, and Erik Wigert. There will be some $fun shops# as well. These are bonsai related topics that will help you improve your skills and well worth taking. On bonsai basics - Other than buying a good bonsai, there are four steps to getting something to be proud of: 1. Obtaining good raw material: Go on club digs, scour nurseries (you got to really dig there too), look for material from growers. 2. Styling to realize the tree"s full potential: To learn you must do lots of workshops and participate in round robin discussions. Understand the $why# as well as the $what# of styling. 3. Development of the branches: Keep your shears with you when watering, keep after them when they are actively growing, do not let new shoots get long. Lots of twigs mean smaller leaves. 4. Maintaining that development: This entails learning to do rejuvenation pruning and proper fertilization. Of these four I consider the last one the most important. Not maintaining the tree properly is akin to obtaining a master#s painting and then letting a two year old use crayons to $improve# it. It grows out of shape fast. BSD Board Nominees for by Sylvia Smith December is finally here and as we bid farewell to 2012, we're reminded once again that it's election time at BSD Elections will be held at the beginning of December's meeting. Anyone who would like to be nominated can still get their name on the ballot so please let one of the current board members know. If there are no other nominees then we will call a motion to accept the slate of officers listed below: President: Sylvia Smith Vice President (Program Chair): Paul Murita Secretary: Diane Lowe Treasurer: Chuck Talley Membership: Jerry Riley Finally, we are still searching for someone to take over the job of newsletter editor. This is an appointed board position so the term can vary and a nomination need not be taken. The newsletter editor has voting rights like any other board position. The only requirement is that you have Microsoft Word. A template has already been made and all you need to do is gather articles and newsletter contributions from club members and plug those into the template. You have the creative liberty to enhance the newsletter to fit your style. The rest is easy, drop it in an and distribute This year the Board opened two positions for Member at Large. The nominees are: Hiram Quinones & Mary Polk We thank Hiram for taking the job these past years, but his workload has made this too difficult to continue. Thanks Hiram for one last newsletter page 7
