She is driving in from Chicago for only one day to share her bonsai knowledge and experiences with our club. Jennifer is a rising star in bonsai and has been a student and personal assistant to bonsai legend, Walter Pall. She has been traveling the globe conducting workshops, lectures, and teaching new and experienced bonsai artists her techniques. Jennifer Price will be educating our club on best practices with carving bonsai and creating dynamic Jin and Shari. Bring your protective eyewear, we will be doing some heaving carving on trees big and small. Members are asked to bring in a tree they would like to have Jennifer work on or give advice for future carving at home. If you don't, no worries, we will have trees. Bring in your tools! Jennifer will come prepared, however, you may be motivated to work on your trees. As always bring a tree, bring a friend and arrive early to help us set up and start on time. BRING ONE ITEM FOR THE RAFFLE THIS MEETING! PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: 8 This year has been extremely educational for our members. Not only did we have John Wall last month sharing his knowledge of preparing trees for shows and photography, we had club member, Dan Bennett educating our club on how to build the right bonsai stand for your trees. After the meeting, I received over a dozen s thanking us for bringing in John Wall. Members expounded on the amount of information, tips, insight they were able to take away after the meeting. John's passion for bonsai was infectious and highly motivating. Who knew a man who lives on a diet of Mountain Dew and Beef Jerky could be so knowledgable on the art of bonsai. (sorry John, I had to) This month guest, Jennifer Price, is going to hold a demonstration you will not want to miss. 2 JENNIFER PRICE - Special Guest Artist Jennifer Price calls herself a "bonsai artist in training" a former ballerina, pilates instructor and a border collie lover. Obviously, her talents run far beyond bonsai. As started earlier, she has traveled abroad with Walter Pall (here in October!) Jim Doyle and recently worked with Jan Culek. After talking with Jennifer, she asked "what type of demonstration hasn't your club conducted in a while?" Great question with a simple answer, CARVING! Multiple club members and our board has been discussed improving their knowledge of this important technique. A skill that will prove invaluable for improving our trees for presentation and shows. 3 CARVING. DEADWOOD. JIN and SHARI CREATING DEADWOOD ON BONSAI, IN THE FORM OF JIN OR SHARI, CAN ENHANCE THE TREE'S CHARACTER SIGNIFICANTLY. A "JIN" IS A BARE-STRIPPED PART OF BRANCH AND A "SHARI" IS A BARKLESS PART OF TRUNK - Bonsai Empire In nature, deadwood is created when a tree is hit by lightning, exposed to sustained periods of drought or when branches snap due to ice stress, wind or weight of snow. The wood dies off and is bleached by intense sunlight. This technique is almost exclusively used on evergreen trees, as creating Jin or Shari on deciduous trees often looks unrealistic (deadwood on a deciduous tree often rots away over time). WHEN? The best time to create deadwood is the early spring or late summer. An example of Jin. HOW TO CREATE DEADWOOD ON BONSAI TREES? Creating a natural looking Jin or Shari requires experience; practice before applying the technique to valuable trees. Using the right Bonsai tools is important; use Jin pliers, graving tools and Lime sulfur, available at most (online) Bonsai shops. CREATING A JIN ON BONSAI Remove the bark from the branch, so only the hardwood remains. Using Jin pliers, pull away slithers of wood and cut them off at the end of the desired Jin. When the basic shape of the Jin is ready round off sharp edges, using either a concave cutter or some sandpaper. If possible, bleach the Jin and prevent it from rotting, by "painting it with Lime sulfur. This will take a night to dry out properly.

4 CREATING SHARI ON A BONSAI? Choosing the right spot for a Shari, not only one that looks good but also doesn t cut off an essential stream of nutrients for branches located higher in the tree, is very difficult. Before you start removing bark, draw the desired shape of the Shari on the trunk with chalk. Do not take any risk and spread out the process of creating a Shari over the course of several months, if not years; start with a narrow strip of bark which you can widen in stages. Cut through the bark with a sharp knife and tear it down using Jin pliers. Once the desired shape is ready you can slightly hollow the trunk using a Concave cutter or graving tools. Now bleach the Shari part by painting it with Lime sulfur, which will protect the Bonsai tree against infections as well. CREATING JIN AND SHARI STEP BY STEP.

Sunday, MARCH 25th BONSAI CIRCUS New to bonsai or just looking to hone your skills, donʼt miss this meeting! Multiple members will hold simultaneous workshops and demos on a variety bonsai related topics geared toward beginners through expert level bonsai artists. A must attend! Sunday, APRIL 29th BEGINNER WORKSHOP & DAN BENNETT STANDS. Club member and master craftsman, Dan Bennett, will discuss building and displaying stands. He will have stands for sale. We are also holding a private workshop area for new members to bring in a tree and learn how to start their first tree. Experienced members will share wiring and styling techniques. Sunday, MAY 20th JOHN WALL - SHOW PREPARATIONS 12-4pm* Bordines Nursery, Rochester Hills John Wall, our show judge from last year, is back by popular demand. John will share his experience in preparing bonsai for shows. Popular subjects of stands, wiring, moss and properly displaying your bonsai will all be addressed. Bring in your trees. Sunday, JUNE 24th JENNIFER PRICE CARVING TECHNIQUES 12-4pm* Bordines Nursery, Rochester Hills Jennifer Price will conduct a live demo on advanced carving techniques and share stories on her time spent studying and working with bonsai legend, Walter Pall. She is coming in from Chicago just for our meeting. We are starting an hour early. Sunday, JULY 22nd Kurt Smith & Large tree styling demo. Kurt Smith, the owner of the Flower Market, is back with another presentation. Plus, experienced club members will be styling a large tree in front of the entire club. Wiring, carving and proper techniques in large branch bending. This tree will be entered in our annual show raffle. BYOB is encouraged. SATURDAY & SUNDAY AUGUST 11th -12th 45th ANNUAL BONSAI SHOW!!! 9am -7:00 Saturday. 9am - 4pm Sunday Bordines Nursery, Rochester Hills Come see incredible bonsai trees on display, live demos, workshops and bonsai trees for sale. We are excited to have the former curator of the National Bonsai Museum, Jack Sustic, as our judge. Live demos and beginner workshops, raffles and more Jack Sustic will be conducting a special workshop and critique of all the trees. Sunday, September 23rd BONSAI AUCTION 11-4pm* Bordines Nursery, Rochester Hills A massive collection of bonsai trees and bonsai related items will be auctioned to club members. A must attend for all levels of bonsai artists. Members are asked to come early and register their items. We will be sending entry forms and sales information prior to the auction. This event will start earlier than previous meetings and will be a catered event. Monday - Tuesday October 8-9th WALTER PALL SPECIAL EVENT (times tbd) Bordines Nursery, Rochester Hills We have bonsai legend Walter Pall for two days!! Monday will be paid workshops and Tuesday Walter will deliver his bonsai inspiration open to club members. Be sure to sign up early, bring in a tree to have evaluated. Spots will fill immediately. Sunday, OCTOBER 21st BONSAI FOR KIDS and BEGINNERS A new idea we are going to try. Bring your kids to the club day. Our chance to get new faces and the opportunity to develop new bonsai artists. Sunday, NOVEMBER 18th WINTER PREPARATIONS We will discuss how to prepare your trees for the brutal Michigan winters. Building cold frames to setting up grow lights indoors for tropical trees.
