Last year, John was our guest judge at our annual show. He gave an exceptional walking critique of every tree on display at the show. He also styled a Rocky Mountain Juniper that was entered into our show's raffle. Just last month, he was the proud recipient of the John Naka award for his "Flying Cloud" Michigan White Cedar at the STL bonsai show. A tree he procured years ago from the shores of Lake Superior. Be sure to check out photos of this incredble tree on the following page. John is going to conduct a lecture and bonsai review on how to prepare your trees for shows. He will review trees brought in by club members, share insight on presenting for the judges. Please bring in a tree or two for advice, tips, styling direction and insight on how to take your prize tree to the next level. Let's have a strong showing and be sure to share on social posts. BRING IN ITEMS TO ENTER IN OUR RAFFLE. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: 8 I am proud to have John Wall return to our club and share his knowledge on bonsai. He will arrive on Thursday, work with Judy Muench and Ray Alexander on Friday. Saturday he will be staying with me and conducting a person one on one workshop on repotting, styling and developing bonsai for today and tomorrow. We have been working dilegently to provide everyone access to premier bonsai artists from across the country to share their experience and help us expand our knowledge beyond books and videos. We have Jennifer Price coming next month and the great Walter Pall coming in October. Every workshop spot is on a "first come first serve" basis. Book your spot at our next meeting and be ready to take your trees to the next level. Information will be on our Facebook page and this newsletter. 2 JOHN WALL - Special Guest Artist On Sunday, John is going to dive deep into his history of presenting award winning trees into national bonsai shows across the country. He'll share stories of procuring trees for Ryan Neil and Todd Schlafer,climbing up hills and crawling through swamps to collect massive yamadori Bald Cyprus. If your interested in working on trees with heavy deadwood, you'll want hear John's advice and stories. John Wall wants us to bring in our best trees for tips and tricks to elevate the presentation of your prize trees. Experienced and beginners should bring one or two trees for advice and refinement techniques.

4 Should I Repot My Bonsai In The Fall Or the Spring? ONE OF THE TRICKIEST AREAS OF RAISING A BONSAI IS THE QUESTION OF REPOTTING. - Bonsai Outlet 2017 Most Bonsai keep growing throughout their lives -unless deliberately stunted- and will periodically need to be transplanted into larger accommodations if they're going to remain happy and healthy. Of course, this is rough on the Bonsai. Trees never replant themselves in nature, so it's up to you to ensure there's as little trauma to the Bonsai as possible. The question of whether it's better to repot in the fall or spring comes up often, and with autumn arriving soon, it's a question some Bonsai owners may be asking themselves. So let's take a look. BONSAI CARE: FALL VS SPRING REPLANTING The short version of the debate boils down to this: If you repot your Bonsai in the fall, it's already getting ready to go dormant for the winter and won't be as affected by the transplant. The roots should have time to heal before spring comes. The downside is, there's more chance of something going wrong, especially with older trees. On the other hand, Spring transplants are generally a bit safer, since it's prime growing season and the tree will be able to quickly rebuild its root system. The tradeoff is that this may greatly lessen its above-ground growth for the following year, as its most productive growing months will be focused on the roots. Either method can work if you follow proper repotting techniques. If you're considering a fall repotting, here are more aspects to consider: 1 - YOUR SPECIFIC BREED Every breed of Bonsai is different, and can react to the seasons quite differently from other kinds. It's a good idea to check care sheets for your specific breed of tree, to ensure it doesn't have a strong preference for one season or the other. 2 - THE AGE OF THE TREE Broadly speaking, the older the tree is, the better it is to wait for spring for replanting, just to be safe. Older, established Bonsai don't deal as well with the shock of a transplant. So the combination of that and the onset of winter can sometimes be too much for them. 3 - THE CONDITION OF THE ROOTS Most replantings - especially with older Bonsai - involve pruning away roots which are too

6 long,thick, or old to function effectively. This, however, also adds to the stress on the Bonsai. Fall plantings are better in situations where you'll be doing relatively little pruning to the roots. 4 - YOUR LOCAL CLIMATE Simply put: If it's an outdoor tree and freezing weather is likely, do not replant in the fall if at all possible. Bonsai deal poorly with freezing weather to begin with, so the combination of repotting stress, pruned roots, and cold weather can easily do great harm to a tree. 5 - SOIL QUALITY If you're doing a fall repotting, be sure the soil is rich with extra fertilizer or vitamin additives. This will help keep the roots healthy and healing throughout the winter, ensuring it's ready for the spring bloom when the time comes. TAKE TIME AND CARE WITH YOUR BONSAI TRANSPLANTS! Much like surgery on humans, every Bonsai repotting carries a level of risk to the tree. However, also like surgery, it's often needed regardless of the risks. If you take time and do plenty of research before beginning the transplant, you and your bonsai will come through with flying colors.

Multiple members will hold simultaneous workshops and demos on a variety bonsai related topics geared toward beginners through expert level bonsai artists. A must attend! Sunday, APRIL 29th BEGINNER WORKSHOP & DAN BENNETT STANDS. Club member and master craftsman, Dan Bennett, will discuss building and displaying stands. He will have stands for sale. We are also holding a private workshop area for new members to bring in a tree and learn how to start their first tree. Experienced members will share wiring and styling techniques. Sunday, MAY 20th JOHN WALL - SHOW PREPARATIONS 12-4pm* Bordines Nursery, Rochester Hills John Wall, our show judge from last year, is back by popular demand. John will share his experience in preparing bonsai for shows. Popular subjects of stands, wiring, moss and properly displaying your bonsai will all be addressed. Bring in your trees. Sunday, JUNE 24th JENNIFER PRICE CARVING TECHNIQUES 12-4pm* Bordines Nursery, Rochester Hills Jennifer Price will conduct a live demo on advanced carving techniques and share stories on her time spent studying and working with bonsai legend, Walter Pall. She is coming in from Chicago just for our meeting. We are starting an hour early. Sunday, JULY 22nd Kurt Smith & Large tree styling demo. Kurt Smith, the owner of the Flower Market, is back with another presentation. Plus, experienced club members will be styling a large tree in front of the entire club. Wiring, carving and proper techniques in large branch bending. This tree will be entered in our annual show raffle. BYOB is encouraged. SATURDAY & SUNDAY AUGUST 11th -12th 45th ANNUAL BONSAI SHOW!!! 9am -7:00 Saturday. 9am - 4pm Sunday Bordines Nursery, Rochester Hills Come see incredible bonsai trees on display, live demos, workshops and bonsai trees for sale. We are excited to have the former curator of the National Bonsai Museum, Jack Sustic, as our judge. Live demos and beginner workshops, raffles and more Jack Sustic will be conducting a special workshop and critique of all the trees. Sunday, September 23rd BONSAI AUCTION 11-4pm* Bordines Nursery, Rochester Hills A massive collection of bonsai trees and bonsai related items will be auctioned to club members. A must attend for all levels of bonsai artists. Members are asked to come early and register their items. We will be sending entry forms and sales information prior to the auction. This event will start earlier than previous meetings and will be a catered event. Monday - Tuesday October 8-9th WALTER PALL SPECIAL EVENT (times tbd) Bordines Nursery, Rochester Hills We have bonsai legend Walter Pall for two days!! Monday will be paid workshops and Tuesday Walter will deliver his bonsai inspiration open to club members. Be sure to sign up early, bring in a tree to have evaluated. Spots will fill immediately. Sunday, OCTOBER 21st BONSAI FOR KIDS and BEGINNERS A new idea we are going to try. Bring your kids to the club day. Our chance to get new faces and the opportunity to develop new bonsai artists. Sunday, NOVEMBER 18th WINTER PREPARATIONS We will discuss how to prepare your trees for the brutal Michigan winters. Building cold frames to setting up grow lights indoors for tropical trees.
