The Uplands Annual General Meeting is on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 7:30 pm Message from the President - John Slade Uplands Board of s. President/Financial & Reserve Treasurer Secretary Facilities/Op/ Manager Liaison Landscaping/Arch. Controls/RV Lot John Slade Vacant Nicole Aitken Charmaine Dobson Diane Hartland Alan Johnson Bud Eckhard Larry Spitzer Alastair Clyne Tim Bergen One of the things I like about spring is the return of the songbirds, singing their stories of hope and renewal. This year that was surpassed by the amazing community spirit that raised the funds necessary to build a new playground in The Uplands. Not a small feat to raised $75,000+ of funds in just over a year by a community of less than 200 homes!!. Congratulations to all and congratulations to the Playground Committee for all their hard work. Read more in their report in this newsletter. Also, please sign up for a few hours of volunteering to get the playground constructed on June 1 st. You may have noticed the construction work on the median at the entrance to the upland. This is a low maintenance beautification of the island. It is part of the projects approved in a new Community Facilities Enhancement Grant we received this spring. Another big part of this grant is installation of LED lighting in the parking lot and exercise areas, allowing us to reduce our electrical consumption. Again, read the full breakdown elsewhere in the newsletter. Finally, I would like to remind everyone of our AGM, to be held on May 24 th at the Recreation Center. It is an opportunity to get updated on the current activities in the Uplands, provide feedback and ask questions. If you cannot attend, please fill out a proxy form and drop it off with Darlene at the office.
Facility Operations - Charmaine Dobson We are now completing CFEP Grant number eight which includes new kitchen cabinets and few new appliances for a total of $11,050, sandblasting and tiling for the inside of the pool, $21,260, new sauna cedar floor and bench for a total of $1,770. These were all completed in Jan The new play structure for $17,500 will be completed on June 1st and 2nd. We submitted an application for another CFEP grant in September 2017 and have been informed in April 2018 that it was successful. The main focus of CFEP grant number nine is on energy reduction including replacement of old lighting fixtures in our pool, hot tub, parking lot, squash court, new blinds for the office, and a brand-new landscape design for our front entrance that will require lower maintenance and low water usage. The board would like to thank Darlene and Diane for continuing to do an excellent job in their areas, pulling together significant information so that additional funding can be possible. Hope you will be able to attend the AGM to get more detailed information on maintaining and improving our facilities, landscaping and parks.
Landscaping - Diane Hartland Summer really is here, the sound of lawn mowers is music to my ears. Birds are singing, we are all happy to be out of the deep freeze. We have a lot of big projects happening in With a 50% matching grant from CFEP (Community Facility Enhancement Program) we are moving forward with a redesign to the front entrance of The Uplands. ULS who has looked after our landscape maintenance for the last 12 years has designed an extricate entrance for us. The design incorporates water saving initiatives coupled with grading techniques, some drought tolerate plants and hardscape installations. Reduced water consumption will be achieved through a re-designed irrigation system, low emitters and small spray heads will be used to minimize water usage. This new system also includes watering for all of the planters. This new landscape bed, will save costs on our ever increasing water bill, reduce the maintenance costs of our gardener by approximately 80%, reduce the cost of our maintenance contract with ULS and give us a beautiful, new updated entrance. Working on the entrance has become a very big challenge with the increased traffic that comes in and out daily. Safety for everyone was a top priority. Have a great summer everyone The grading will assist in directing water to areas where it is most needed. The island entrance will still have some of our existing lilies and irises, as well as some very hardy Karl Forester grasses. The key interest points in the bed will incorporate a dry rock bed that will emulate a small stream. The feature points to the plan will be our existing planters.
Playground Replacement - Tim, Diane, Charmaine, Suzanne Playground Construction June 1 & 2, 2018 We are very excited to announce that all the funding is in place for the new playground. There have been many people involved with this legacy project. It has been a great way for neighbours to come together for a common goal. Thank you to everyone for your support. A grand opening event is being planned for September, which will involve the entire community of Hawkwood. We are counting down the weeks until we build the new playground. Construction will proceed in the rain or sunshine. We need a few more people to help with construction and site safety. If you haven t signed up yet please consider spending a few hours to help build this legacy project for our community. Anyone over 18 years can volunteer for a ½ day, full day or both days. Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided for all volunteers. Please go to the Signup Genius to select the time that works best for you: New Playground features: The city of Calgary has donated a picnic table to our playground. It will be placed under the trees on the grass on the west side of the playground. We have used the donation from the Hawkwood Community Association to add some play panels. Do you have a budding musician in your family? There are a couple of features they will really enjoy! The Playground committee will be at the AGM to answer any questions you may have or you can us at uplandsplayground.com.
RV LOT DRAW Since we have such a great demand and a large waiting list each year, we have moved up the draw date to allow the people who do not receive a lot, more time to find another location for their units. The rental dates still remain from July 1, 2018 to June 30, Please submit your request on or before May 30, Draw Date is on May 31, 2018 at 10 AM. Fence Painting?? Building a Fence?? House Painting?? With many of the homes showing signs of wear and tear, we wish to REMIND all homeowners that ALL exterior work must be pre-approved by The Uplands Board of s. As many of you might have forgotten, there are Architectural Controls in this community. All house titles have restrictive covenants registered on them. Please check your title and contact The Board when making any exterior changes in order to save some very costly errors. For a copy of the Architectural Controls, please see our website: URL:
