2 The Rabbit Written by Felicia Law Illustrated by Lesley Danson The Rabbit has arrived at the Rumble's Cave Hotel to be the gardener. He has a difficult job the garden is full of weeds. But the Rabbit is ready to dig and hoe and rake and plant all the things that Rumble wants except for the roses!

3 Rumble wanted some flowers. He wanted to pick a bunch of flowers for the Panther. She had such pretty green eyes. But there were no flowers in the garden of the Rumble's Cave Hotel. There were no flowers, no berries, no fruits. There were just weeds. 4

4 It was lucky that the Rabbit arrived. Dig, dig, dig, said the Rabbit. Do you need a gardener? Rumble looked at the Rabbit. I do, he said. You can dig the garden right away. Dig, dig, dig, said the Rabbit. What's he talking about? asked the Spider. 7

5 Here's the garden, said Rumble. Where's the garden? asked the Rabbit. It's here, said Rumble, under the thistles and thorns, under the leaves and weeds. Hoe, hoe, hoe, said the Rabbit. Ho, ho, ho? repeated the Spider. What's he laughing about? 8

6 Leave it to me, said the Rabbit. I'll get this garden sorted. I'll plant rows of carrots. I don't like carrots, said Rumble. Nobody likes carrots, said the Spider. A garden must have carrots, said the Rabbit. I want flowers, said Rumble, flowers for the Panther. I want flowers too, said the Spider. Flowers attract insects and I like insects. I'll grow carrots, said the Rabbit. 11

7 The Rabbit dug up the weeds. He hoed and planted seeds in rows. The Rabbit is good, said Rumble. The garden looks like a garden. The garden looks like rows of carrots, said the Spider. Where are your flowers? When will the flowers grow? asked Rumble. When the rain stops, said the Rabbit. When will the insects come? asked the Spider. Insects are pests, said the Rabbit. Insects are delicious, said the Spider. 12

8 After the rain, the seeds began to grow. Tiny green shoots appeared above the soil. Thick green leaves started to sprout. Are these flowers? asked Rumble. With insects? asked the Spider. Of course, said the Rabbit. They look like carrots to me, said the Spider. All flowers look like carrots at first, said the Rabbit. Flowers 15

9 I need flowers for the Panther, said Rumble. You must wait, said the Rabbit. It takes time for flowers to grow. I can wait, said Rumble. I'll sit down and wait right here. They won't grow any quicker, said the Rabbit, if you sit and watch them. But Rumble and the Spider and the Rabbit sat and watched the flowers anyway. 16

10 The flowers may grow tonight, said Rumble. I don't think so, said the Rabbit. But if it makes you happy, I'll watch the flowers all night too. 19

11 That's funny, said Rumble next morning. The flowers are growing smaller, not bigger. They still look like carrots to me, said the Spider. Carrots, flowers, flowers, carrots... said the Rabbit, it's all the same in the end. I don't trust this Rabbit, said the Spider. He doesn't know his carrots from his flowers. 20

12 Rumble was worried. Perhaps someone is taking the flowers, he said, shaking his head. We can't guard flowers all day, said the Rabbit. We'll stick a scarecrow in the ground. It will guard the flowers for us. Flowers Guard them from what? asked Rumble. Birds, said the Spider. But birds don't steal flowers, said Rumble. They steal the insects on the flowers, said the Spider, and the insects are mine. 23

13 The scarecrow looked good. It was made from two poles and a turnip, some old clothes and straw. The scarecrow will guard the flowers, said Rumble. And the insects, said the Spider. It stood in the garden looking very fierce, and it certainly scared away the crows. You're right! said the Rabbit. No one will come near your flowers now. They'll be much too scared

14 But he was wrong! Next day, when Rumble and the Spider arrived at the garden, the tops of the flowers were all nibbled away. The Rabbit shrugged. Perhaps the scarecrow wasn't scary enough. Everyone steals carrots. But flowers! Who'd want to steal flowers? 27

15 Take my advice, said the Rabbit. Give the Panther a bunch of carrots. The Panther will like these big carrots. And the insects are big too. Come and see, said the Spider. 29
