Watering: I like to keep my pots in a container with an inch of water. This way the soil absorbs the water as it needs. I am attaching a picture to demonstrate. Light: The Dawn Redwood will need 3-4 hours of good sunlight or supplemental light as it grows. Fluorescent light works great if you have it and need more light. Fertilizing: For fertilizing, I like to use a general fertilizer mixed at half strength and fertilize every 2 weeks. I am using Miracle Grow water soluble on mine right now.

7 Dawn Redwood Bonsai Forest Planting & Care Tips Starting Seeds: Seeds can be planted any time of year, but March 1 - September 30 will give the best light and temperature conditions. If you choose to plant from October - February, it is best to supplement with additional light to promote sturdy growth. Sprouting Seeds: Two important factors: o Temperature - soil temperature should be between o F (21-27 o C), soil temperature is typically 5 degrees cooler than room temperature. o Moisture - soil should remain at the consistency of a damp sponge. Germination: Most seeds will sprout in 7-14 days. Weak, Spindly Seeds: Cause - the most common is insufficient light. Cure - use fluorescent lights or a simple desk lamp to supplement heat 8 from top of container. After conditions have changed and the sprouts are healthy, move them to a sunny window where they can receive the highest amount of natural sunlight while still being indoors. Prevention - plant according to directions, place in a location with upmost control of the conditions and stay attentive. Note: If there is plenty of light, here are other factors affecting the plant growth: too much light, intensity of light source, temperature swings, improper use of fertilizer, leaving seedlings too long under plastic bag (high humidity, high moisture), taking plastic bag off too early and improper spacing of seeds. Perfectly Moistened Soil: Open soil bag and fill with enough water to meet the soil line. Seal soil bag and work water into soil with hands. Over the sink, poke holes in base of bag and let water drain from the bag, squeezing out as much water as possible. Soil Type: A sterile soil-less growing medium made of perlite, vermiculite and peat moss. Watering: The soil in the container should be moist, but never soggy.

8 If over-watered, simply pour off the excess water. A simple test is to lift the container and if it feels light, then water it. Do not let the soil dry out. Fertilizer: Once the seeds have sprouted, the seedlings need to be fertilized or they will get weak, spindly growth. Fertilize during the growing season following fertilizer manufacturer s directions. Transplanting: This kit was designed to grow in the container, but can be transplanted to a larger container or garden. Start seeds indoors 5-6 weeks before transplanting outside after last danger of frost. Harden off plants for approximately one week - place outdoors during the day in morning or later afternoon sun; bring inside at night. Avoid hot mid-day sun or the plants will sunburn and/or the soil will dry out too quickly. Do not let the plants freeze by covering them at night and/or when cold weather predicted.
