Any big project seems easier when broken down into workable parts. Take the time to follow these 10 steps and you can grow a healthy lawn that will add beauty and value to your home. If you have any questions as you work through this process, visit your Southern States lawn care expert for helpful advice and materials. 10-STEP CHECKLIST 1. Test the Soil for ph and Nutrient Value 2. Determine Lawn Area 3. Adjust Soil ph 4. Choose the Right Grass Seed 5. Sow the Seeds 6. Apply Fertilizer 7. Apply Seed Protection 8. Watering 9. Mowing and Maintenance 10. Maintaining an Established Lawn STEP 1 Test the Soil for ph and Nutrient Value The existing soil in your yard needs to have the proper ph value and nutrients to support a healthy lawn. A soil test from Southern States is the most accurate, scientific way to discover exactly what your soil needs. By adding only the required amendments (soil additives), you ll save time and money. How to Test: Simply pull approximately 10 plugs of dirt about 3-6 inches deep from different areas of your yard. Remove any debris such as rocks, grass and roots. Combine and mix collected soil in a clean, pint-sized paper bag and take it to your Southern States lawn expert. The sample will be sent for professional lab analysis and takes about 7-10 days (it may take longer during peak planting months, so test early). The test will provide detailed information about your soil s ph and nutrient needs. Why to Test: A ph level of is important for the grass plant to get the most out of the soil nutrients. Anything less indicates acidity and lime should be applied to neutralize the soil. Numbers greater than 6.5 indicate alkalinity and sulfur should be used to make the soil more acidic. Your soil may also be lacking in certain nutrients. The soil test will determine exactly which fertilizers your hungry soil is craving. Based on the soil test results, your Southern States lawn expert can help you choose the right fertilizer blend for your lawn. 2

STEP 2 Determine Lawn Area It s important to know the square footage of your lawn area so you can purchase the correct amounts of seed and soil amendments. Use this grid to draw a lawn area map to help you calculate your footage. Draw an outline of your lot. You may need to pace off the rough dimensions first. Include your house, driveway, walkways, trees and any other places you will not be growing grass (see sketch example). You can also use this map to layout a landscaping plan for a perennial border, shrubs, water garden, etc. Lawn Area Map 3

HELPFUL TIP Use a current survey of your property to give accurate measurements. To calculate the square footage, enter measurements here: LOT AREA length ft. x width ft. = area (a) sq. ft. HOUSE AREA length ft. x width ft. = area (b) sq. ft. NON-GRASS AREA any area you do not want grass = area (c) sq. ft. TOTAL LAWN AREA (a) sq. ft. (b) sq. ft. (c) sq. ft. = Total Grass Area sq. ft. QUICK REFERENCE CHART 1 / 4 Acre = 10,890 sq. ft. 1 / 3 Acre = 14,520 sq. ft. 1 / 2 Acre = 21,780 sq. ft. 2 / 3 Acre = 29,040 sq. ft. 3 / 4 Acre = 32,670 sq. ft. 1 Acre = 43,560 sq. ft. 4

STEP 3 Adjust Soil ph Identify Soil Structure As you map and take soil samples from your yard, pay attention to the texture of your soil. It will help tell you if it needs amendments to make it more plant friendly. Does it contain lots of organic matter (dark and moist), have a dense clay texture or a porous sandy composition? It is important to know how easily water, roots and air will penetrate. A clay soil can become compacted and may have too little pore space. Sandy soils can be too porous, allowing for poor nutrient and moisture retention. Your Southern States lawn expert can help you decide if you need to add compost, humus or top soil to improve these different soil types. Select and Add Soil Amendments Now you re ready to improve the growing condition of the soil. Based on the results of your soil test and your own observations, your Southern States lawn expert can explain: > The best way to correct your soil s ph > Which fertilizer will give you the best results > When and how to apply the treatments > Which tools to use for even distribution > How to prepare the existing soil to receive the treatments (you may need to break-up compacted soil, add additional top soil or enrich the texture with compost, organic humus or liquid carbon) > Anything you don t understand about lawn care? Just ask us we can help Adjust Soil ph To get the most from your fertilizer applications, your soil ph needs to have about a 6.5 value. It is best to have the ph analyzed with a soil test each year or anytime you notice a decline in the appearance of your lawn. Liming can be done in spring or fall, but is not recommended during the hot summer months. To raise the ph of your soil, add lime. Limestone: lb. per 1,000 sq. ft. to raise ph to 6.5* Soil Texture 4.5pH 5.0pH 5.5pH 5 Sandy Loam 42 lb lb. 14 lb. Loam 84.3 lb lb. 28 lb. 8 STEP 4 Choose the Right Grass Seed GRASS SEED BLENDS AND MIXTURES 7 Turfgrasses play an important role in many aspects of our daily lives. Turfgrasses are used for home lawns, roadsides, public recreation areas, playing surfaces for athletic fields, golf courses and in many other applications. Over the last 20 years, great strides have been made in the improvement of traditional turfgrasses by increasing disease resistance, drought tolerance, cold tolerance and overall persistence. Each turfgrass variety and species has its own unique growth, quality and adaptation characteristics. A turfgrass blend or mixture is the best choice for most lawns because it will thrive within a broader range of growing conditions and provides the added benefit of greater disease resistance. Every variety and species used in Southern States blends and mixtures has been chosen for its ability to enhance overall performance. Southern States turfgrasses encompass the full range of turf species and have been specifically adapted for quality, durability and adaptation to growing conditions in our territory. At Southern States, we strive to supply you with the best turf seed products on the market. We go above and beyond industry standards of testing to supply you with some of the purest products available. Compare our seed labels to comparable brands and you will see the difference for yourself.

Because every lawn is unique, you ll find many different grass seed varieties to choose from. When selecting a grass seed, look for specific variety uses and characteristics listed on the bag. Select the type that best suits your yard s sun exposure, moisture availability and traffic pattern. HOW TO READ A SEED TAG Before buying seed, you ll want to know what s actually in the bag. Seed tags (required by law) will tell you the seed quality facts. % Pure Seed: The percent, by weight, of the component or variety. % Other Ingredients: Amount, by weight, of other crop seeds, inert matter and weed seeds included. Southern States has strict guidelines in place to minimize the weed and other crop seed percentages ensuring you are planting top quality seed. % Germination: How much of the grass seed in the bag really grew under actual testing. The higher the percentage, the better the quality of germination. { { { HELPFUL TIP Beware of low-cost seed mixes because they often contain common, unadapted, low-quality grass seed. Southern States specializes in top quality grass seed that has been developed and tested for its superior growth results and disease resistance. 8

STEP 5 Sow the Seeds The best time for seeding a new lawn is in the fall. Warm soils, cooler temperatures and autumn rains create ideal conditions for seed germination and growth. There is also less competition from weeds in fall than in early spring. A lawn can be started or overseeded in the spring and summer if adequate water is available. But unless preventative steps are taken, it may become infested with annual weeds. Talk with your Southern States lawn expert about precautions to take if you must plant before fall. To get uniform coverage, divide the seed mixture in half. Sow half the seed in 1 direction and the other half at right angles to the first. A seed spreader is the best tool for even seed distribution. See the drawing above for the proper spread pattern. Handseeding is possible if done carefully and if the area is small. After sowing the seed, lightly rake the area to cover the seed no greater than 1/4 inch deep. Seed won t germinate if covered too deeply. See Step 7 for seed protection products. STEP 6 Apply Fertilizer Fertilizer application on newly sown lawns should occur at the time of seeding. The fertilizer should be formulated with a high phosphorus content to promote strong root development and quick green up of the newly seeded lawn. Southern States Premium Lawn Starter is formulated to provide quick green up and root development without burning the new seedlings. Premium Lawn Starter with AVAIL Apply February-Early April or whenever you seed or reseed > Promotes increased root development of new seedlings > Lower chlorine content for less burn potential > Ideal for landscape and ornamental plants > Contains magnesium to maintain green color > AVAIL phosphate enhancer makes the applied phosphorous more available to the turfgrass, thus making the fertilizer more environmentally favorable 40 lb. covers 5,300 sq. ft. ( ) 13 AVAIL is a registered trademark of SFP, Specialty Fertilizer Products.

STEP 7 Apply Seed Protection Mulch and other protective coverings will conserve moisture and reduce the amount of watering needed. It also helps keep seed from freezing in colder weather, from washing away in heavy rains and from being eaten by birds. Straw is an adequate, inexpensive mulch. Allow 1 bale for every 1,000 square feet. Be aware that any live seed in straw will germinate with the new grass, and straw also decays slowly. Peat moss is a more expensive mulch, but offers some helpful benefits. It does not contain weed seed and easily decomposes into the soil. STEP 8 Watering Water is critical for seed germination. Grass seedlings can die quickly from lack of water and even a mulched lawn needs enough water to keep the soil surface moist. A fine spray delivers the best coverage. The water should fall on the ground evenly without forming puddles or causing run-off. Water lightly 2-3 times daily until the seed emerges from the soil. After the grass emerges, 1-2 waterings a day is suggested until the lawn is completely established. An established lawn should be watered when your grass begins to wilt, watering thoroughly with 1 inch of water. This deep watering encourages grass roots to grow straight down, making your lawn less susceptible to disease and heat stress. The best time of day to water your established lawn is in the early morning when evaporation rates are low and grass can dry completely. If you water in the evenings, the grass doesn t have enough time to dry, and excess moisture makes the lawn susceptible to disease. HELPFUL TIP To measure how much water your lawn is getting, set empty coffee cans on the grass where they can catch water from your sprinkler. Check them periodically, and when 1 inch of water has collected, turn off the sprinkler. Make a note of how long it took for that 1 inch to accumulate and remember it for next time. 14

Successful Lawn Information Available Online at STEP 9 Mowing and Maintenance Mowing for a Healthy Lawn Mowing is essential for the health and lush appearance of your lawn. It helps discourage weeds and makes the lawn more resistant to pests. First, start with a good mower and keep it well-maintained with sharp blades to avoid ripping the grass. If your lawn has a whitehaze look, the mower blades may be dull. The mowing height affects the health and development of the grass. Kept too short, grass will develop a shallower root and become more susceptible to drought and disease. During hot summer months, a taller height will help shade the soil and reduce heat stress on the lawn. As a general guide, Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue lawns should be kept at a height of 2-3 inches and tall fescue lawns at a height of 3-4 inches. For best results, cut grass often enough so that no more than 1/3 of the total grass height is removed at one time. HELPFUL TIP For a good clean cut, follow these tips: > Never mow when the grass is wet > Keep your mower maintained with sharp blades for a cleaner cut > Use a lawn mower bagger to keep grass clippings from smothering new seedlings > Raking is not recommended because a rake can uproot young plants 15

HELPFUL TIP Once a year, either in the spring or fall, aerate the soil and overseed the grass for a thick, even turf. Periodically, dethatch so water and fertilizer can easily reach the grass roots. Time spent on these jobs will help keep your lawn looking great. Aerating: To break up compacted soil, yearly aerating is recommended. It involves pulling up small plugs of soil, thus helping air, water and nutrients get through to the roots of your grass. Your Southern States lawn expert can help you purchase or rent equipment for dethatching and aerating. Dethatching: Thatch is a layer of undecomposed and partially decomposed organic residue (usually grass clippings) located above the soil. Excessive thatch can prevent water and fertilizer from reaching the grass roots and increase the risk of insects and disease. Overseeding: After dethatching and aerating, you can sow new seed over existing grass. This will add new life to your lawn and make a thicker turf. Use half the seed amount recommended for new lawns. 16

STEP 10 Maintaining an Established Lawn Our recommended program for maintenance of established lawns is a year-long plan designed to keep your lawn green, weed free and pest free. Refer to instructions printed on each product for specific application timing and rates. Feb.-April Aug.-Dec. WINTER EARLY SPRING FALL LATE SPRING SUMMER May- Aug. Mar.- May* *Note: Late Spring Lawn Food with Broadleaf Weed Control can also be used as a fall application to control weeds. In addition to our recommended year-long maintenance plan, we have products that help fill in the gaps when your needs vary from a traditional maintenance program. Lawn Food : Use in early to late spring and fall to give your lawn the boost it needs without added weed and insect control. Lawn Starter: To give your seed a strong start, use early to late spring and fall, when seeding or overseeding your lawn. Crabgrass Control: Apply early spring to stop crabgrass before it starts. Broadleaf Weed Control : Apply late spring and fall to control stubborn broadleaf weed problems. 17

FERTILIZING The 3 major nutrients your lawn needs to thrive are Nitrogen(N), Phosphorus(P) and Potassium(K). Nitrogen (N): Promotes vigorous blade, leaf and stem growth encouraging a dark green color. It improves overall plant health, quality and density and aids in tolerance to heat, cold and drought stress. However, too much nitrogen can cause quick blade growth at the expense of strong root development. The best type of nitrogen for your lawn is slow-release, because it offers a consistent supply of nitrogen, has less chance of burning the grass and reduces nutrient loss due to leaching from the soil. Slow-release nitrogen also reduces pollution caused by fertilizer run off from overwatering or heavy rain. Phosphorus (P): This nutrient promotes early plant development, hastens plant maturity and stimulates bloom and root development. Potassium (K): Acting like a vitamin, potassium helps strengthen the grass plant. It improves tolerance to drought, disease and heat, increases winter hardiness, aids in water uptake and enhances overall health and vigor. HELPFUL TIP Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) are always listed in this order on fertilizer bags. The numbers correspond to the amount of each in the formula. 18

CarpetMAker PROFESSIONAL quality TURF FERTILIZERS Southern States CarpetMaker Professional Quality Turf Fertilizers are high-quality fertilizers with a minimum amount of filler, delivering more nutrients in various forms to both turf and ornamentals. CarpetMaker s consistent, timed release of nitrogen throughout the season means less maintenance, mowing and watering, and fewer applications of fertilizer. In addition, because of its unique slow-release formulation, CarpetMaker is more environmentally friendly, with less leaching into the soil or run-off into the environment, especially where the potential is high, like slopes, compacted soil or sparsely covered lawns. What the Professionals Use CarpetMaker Professional Quality Fertilizers use methylene urea as their source of slow-release nitrogen. Used by professional golf course superintendents and turf landscapers, methylene urea assures efficient and sustained release of nitrogen under a broad range of environmental conditions, consistently feeding the plant over time. It even provides uniform feeding in heavy rains or when used in equipment that can cause particle fracturing. Less expensive fertilizers use a water soluble form of nitrogen that is released immediately to the grass, causing it to be consumed rapidly and/or lost in run-off. CarpetMaker s unique triple-action release uses both hydrolysis and microbial activity, providing quick, immediate and long-lasting results. And, because CarpetMaker products are formulated with low chlorine content, there is less build-up of salts in the lawn and less burn potential when conditions are dry. CarpetMaker is a registered trademark of Southern States Cooperative, Incorporated. 23

CarpetMAker PROFESSIONAL quality TURF FERTILIZERS CarpetMaker Apply in February Late April and Fall > High-quality, all purpose fertilizer with added iron and magnesium for greener and healthier lawns > Blended with AVAIL phosphate fertilizer enhancer making more phosphorus available to the turf and Wolf Trax micronutrient iron for consistent nutrition > 25% slow-release nitrogen from methylene urea > Recommended when a pre-emergence herbicide is applied separately 40 lb. covers 7,000 sq. ft. ( ) AVAIL A polymer coating for phosphorus fertilizer helps increase phosphorus use efficiency. AVAIL absorbs aluminum, iron and other cations in the soil to help keep the phosphorus more available. It works with all phosphate fertilizers. Wolf Trax DDP Micro-Nutrient Dry Fertilizer Coating Physically and chemically formulated to coat dry fertilizers. It will not come off. Spreads evenly throughout the fertilizer blend. This ensures micronutrient is spread throughout your turf and plant uptake is more consistent. Granular micronutrients are often unevenly spread throughout a blend, leading to inconsistent application across your lawn. Each fertilizer prill is thoroughly coated with this micro-nutrient. Every time the plant root intercepts a prill of nitrogen, potassium or phosphorus, it is also finding the micro-nutrient. Root to nutrient contact is virtually assured. HELPFUL TIP To apply 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, divide the first number on the fertilizer bag into 100. For example, CarpetMaker fertilizer should be applied at a rate of 6.25 pounds per 1,000 square feet (100/16 = 6.25 pounds). Or, divide 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet by the nitrogen percentage (1/0.16 = 6.25 pounds). DDP is a registered trademark of Wolf Trax, Incorporated. 24
