Governor Brown has initiated a mandatory 25% reduction and the Blue Lake Springs Mutual Water Company in a stage 3 with no outside watering and a 35% reduction in water usage. It leaves all of us thinking of ways that we can save water, but still save the landscaping that we have worked so hard to plant. Well there is a product that may help. It is called DriWater. DriWater is a patented time- release irrigation solution. It s water bound in the form of a solid gel. When the gel comes into contact with the soil, enzymes in the soil break down the food grade ingredients and water is delivered to the root mass of the plant. Use of DriWater can provide water for 30 to 90 days. Currently the Blue Lake Springs Maintenance Blue Lake Springs Lakes Due to the lack of rain and snow fall this year you will notice that both Fly In Lake and Lodge lake may start to drop in water levels earlier than when we receive normal rain or snow. Here at Lodge Lake we have the advantage of using the well system to help keep the lake level up, but Fly In Lake is strictly fed by Moran Creek. If Moran Creek is running slow or stops it affects the lake greatly. Department is using this product to water areas that would have had to use Blue Lake Springs Mutual Water. If you would like to see the product in use please come down to the lodge and if a staff member available they will be happy to show you where we are using it. This product can also be used for household plants to water while you are away on vacation. Ace Hardware in Arnold is currently carrying DriWater. You can also go on line to Lodge Log 3

4 PLEASE READ IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS MEMBER ASSESSMENT The 2015 Association Assessments were mailed November 27, Please remember that the Association Assessments for 2015 are delinquent AFTER May 1, The Improved Lot rate, the Unimproved Lot rate, and the Association Membership Assessments are all $478. If you didn t receive your 2015 Assessment, please call the Association Office immediately at FAMILY SEASON CARDS Family Season Cards must be picked up at the Recreation Office or the Business Office. The cards may be picked up by either the member or the person whose name is on the card. Please be ready to show identification. Cards may not be picked up by other family members unless their names are on the cards. In order to prevent a delay in picking up the card(s), please be ready to give the staff the lot/unit numbers of the property. If you have any questions, please call the Business Office at VIP Article The Beetle infestation killing trees has become very serious, BLS has lost about 450 trees since last august. Unit 9, Saint Andrews Dr. and small portion of Meadow Drive have lost almost 150 trees to the Beetle. I have decided to take a proactive approach to this issue. The last two weeks I have had meetings with our tree Fallers, PG&E (ACRT), CAL FIRE Foresters and Pest Control companies to try and devise a plan that will slow down this beetle. Predictions of the amount of dead trees ahead of us in this drought goes from 800 to 1500 more in BLS only from now till this time next year. There are two types of Beetle attacking our trees. One we call the Ipps Beetle because it attacks the top part of the tree, the other is the Western Pine Beetle who attacks the lower part of the tree. When you see the tops of your trees turn brown be assured the Western Beetle is getting the signal from the Ipps Beetle and is very close behind. Lodge Log 4

5 These Beetles attack stressed trees, (not Cedar Trees or Oak). Obviously all our trees are stressed from lack of rain/snow. Especially during times of drought it is very important to thin out your trees to avoid as much competion for water and nutrients, you get to pick the trees you want to try and keep not the Beetle. From these meetings we have come up with this plan; When you have been informed you have a dead tree (s) first Call PG&E at pge and ask if they would look at your dead tree issue and determine if they will cut them down. If they are going to cut your tree (s) down then we ask that you call you re, (or a), pest control company in the area and have the rest of your trees that are not Beetle infested yet (not the Cedar or Oak), sprayed with Tengard. This spray sets off an oder that the Beetles do not like and it can save the rest of your trees. This spray lasts about 50 days and you will want them sprayed again. When the tree shows dead brown pine needles on it they tell me the Beetles are already gone but TO THEIR NEXT TARGET. Several tree fallers have been doing this before they cut down trees for quite a few years and feel they have had great success saving the rest of the trees on the property. This spraying is cheap compared to the $2,000 to $10,000 you could have to pay if you have to have a tree faller take more dead trees down. One owner has lost 21 trees and his bids for the job run from $14,000 to $18,000. We have asked all tree fallers to do this spraying before they put a saw to a tree. If you are going to cut down a live tree for any reason you especially should spray your other trees and warn your neighbors they should do the same. The beetles key off the sap smell especially green tree sap when cut down. Many of you may want to spray trees on your property now that you want to save and I suggest that all of you in Unit 9, Saint Andrews and a short Area on Meadow near Saint Andrews do this now. Call your Pest Control and ask to have this done. If they do not do this spraying keep calling others. Some of the Pest Controls I see around the Arnold area are, Anchor , Clark , Foothill Sierra , Rod Diehl You may know others but some may not do this Tengard spraying. These Pest Control Company s can explain what Tengard is and answer all your questions about it. I have also made arraignments with PG&E and the tree fallers to drop these trees in Mill lengths where ever possible. I have people who will pick these logs up and take them to the Mill. I have an agreement with Cal Fire Forestry that these two people will do the dead tree exempt paper work on these trees for all of us. I have let our BLS Water Company know all about what we are doing and we have a good working plan to watch out for your water system. The water company will be shutting off water to your house while they drop these dead trees and will turn it on after logs have been removed to check for leaks. If you come up to your home and the water is off please call the water company number , weekend or after hours number is on their answer message. They will respond very quick to your call. It is my hope that even though you are not here all the time to see what is happening you will respond to this serious issue where you have your home in BLS. Everyone I have talked to for my research says this process will greatly decrease the number of dead trees we will experience this season depending on your response to this issue.
