1 NURSERY/LANDSCAPE TECHNOLOGY Career Development Event 1. CDE parts: This CDE shall consist of three parts having a total score of points broken down as follows. A. Judging 100 points B. Information 400 points C. Identification 400 points D. Practicums points A. Judging (100 points): Two classes of 4 samples each to be placed from top to bottom on the basis of quality and condition (from first to fourth place). One class shall be selected from bare root, container grown, balled and burlapped, or lining out nursery stock. One class shall be of landscape plans. B. Information and Skills (400 points): 40 objective type questions and specimens for analysis will be selected from the following areas: 1. Nursery, landscape, gardening industry 2. Plant science 3. Soils & fertilization 4. Plant propagation 5. Landscape design 6. Plant materials 7. Nursery practices 8. Landscape practices 9. Turf & grounds maintenance C. Identification (400 points): Composed of 50 specimens and/or samples selected from the following areas (each specimen valued at 8 points): 1. Shade trees 7. Ground covers 2. Ornamental trees 8. Perennials 3. Deciduous shrubs 9. Annuals 4. Evergreen trees 10. Plant disorders and insects 5. Evergreen shrubs 11. Weeds 6. Vines D. Practicums ( points): Two practicums will be selected from the following areas: 2016 Pruning nursery stock Establish a lawn by seeding Volume and area for different plots Estimate materials for a given landscape plan Determine necessary soil amounts for potting Establish a lawn by sodding Calculate needed material for patio and sidewalks using pavers and keystone system Determining material for planting a bed or hedge Use of architects scale Determine materials for retaining wall. 2. Four members shall constitute a team for this CDE at the State FFA Convention. The top three scores will determine the team score. 3. Official Dress or appropriate FFA attire is required. Refer to Rule 1-A-5 on page Time: Contestants shall receive 50 minutes to complete each part of the CDE. 5. References: A suggested reference list is included but similar titled references will provide the needed information /19/2011

2 6. Computer scan sheets will be used for this CDE. Form number will be used. Refer to the appendix for a sample. 7. Objective questions and specimens for analysis will be developed each year prior to the State FFA Convention by individuals conducting the CDE. 8. Samples may include leaves, twigs, or entire plants. When trees and shrubs are in a dormant or bud stage, leaf samples may be included with the plant or twig. Potted samples should be provided when practical. A picture may be used to supplement the samples. 9. Example practicums are listed on the Minnesota FFA Website. BASIC LIST 1. Judging: The classes will consist of specimens selected from part 3 of the basic list. 2. Information and Skills: 40 objective type questions and specimens for analysis will be selected from the following areas: a. Nursery, landscape, & gardening industry -geographical location -occupations/opportunities -industry scope b. Plant science -classification -plant parts -plant growth principles c. Soils and fertilization -soil texture and structure -water holding capacity -aeration -soil ph -soil management and testing -nutrients/nutrient balance -chemical fertilizers -fertilizer application -artificial soils d. Plant propagation -seeding -transplanting/potting -cuttings, rhizomes, and corms -budding and grafting e. Landscape design -basic principles of design -reading and interpreting plans and scales f. Plant materials (for plants listed in part 3) -water and soil needs -light requirement -use in the landscape -pest problems -maintenance needs g. Nursery practices /19/2011
