2 WELCOME Gordon & Jo Bruce welcome you to Ferryman Polytunnels. Our aim is to provide quality products and personal service at a reasonable price. Ferryman Polytunnels Ltd is a Family owned Business, based in Devon and has been making Polytunnels for over 30 years. Over the years Ferryman Polytunnels has developed a quality range of tunnels designed especially for the individual needs of the amateur gardener and allotment holder, through to the commercial horticultural market. Each Polytunnel is made to order so you can personalize it to suit your needs. We have even supplied Polytunnels for boat housing, animal shelters, swimming pools and wormeries, to name but a few. All our polytunnel frames are made from quality British steel tube which is galvanized inside and outside for maximum corrosion protection. We use a hoop spacing of 5ft, for all but the 21ft and 24ft wide Tunnels which makes the Ferryman Polytunnel easier to clad as there is more support for the polythene, and gives the frame tremendous strength compared to some of the other polytunnels on the market. Our hoops are made in two halves, reducing the need for extra bracing and are quick and easy to erect because of our unique sleeve joiners. Door Frames for the Hinged or Roll-up Doors are all 4 wide on Tunnels up to and including 14 wide, larger Tunnels have 8 openings, enabling easy access and giving good ventilation. This means that on smaller tunnels extra side ventilation is generally unnecessary. Door frames are made using 3 x 2 timber on all except the 21 and 24 tunnels which have 3 x 3 door frames. This ensures that the door frames are capable of holding the polythene without bowing. All the timber that is used has been pressure treated, which helps protect the timber against insect attack and rot. The Ferryman Classic range of Polytunnels is designed to be solid and strong, but if you are sited in an area which experiences extreme weather conditions then our Tufftunnel range could be more suitable for your needs. Size and Site This depends on three things, what space you have available, your budget and what you intend to grow inside your Polytunnel (fruit, veg, flowers, poultry! Or a combination). At Ferryman Polytunnels, we manufacture the 14ft and 18ft wide tunnels in the traditional semi circular shape, with the remainder of the 8ft to 24ft wide range having a 3ft straight side. It is always preferable to build a Polytunnel on the level, however, a Tunnel can be built on a slope. If the Tunnel runs along the slope then the lower foundation tubes can be replaced with longer ones. If it runs length ways down the slope then the hoops need to be set vertically. A GUIDE TO CHOOSING A POLYTUNNEL Tunnel covering We offer a choice of polythene covers (see polythene specification on page 6). Tunnels over 40ft long may need extra side ventilation, a side vent kit can be fitted. When fitting a side vent, we advise using ground anchors or concreting the foundation tubes into the ground. Shade netting can be used instead of polythene to protect plants that do not like direct sunlight and require protection from extreme weather conditions. The fruit cage net with a 20mm mesh is ideal to use over a tunnel to protect fruit, vegetables or fish ponds. Ways to attach your cover The traditional method for fixing the cover is by digging a trench around the base of the tunnel (except doorways) and burying the bottom edges of the cover. This is still the preferred method for many people. Base rails are an alternative to trenching. When using this method we recommend that the foundation tubes should be concreted in place or if this is not possible then anchor plates should be used to secure the Polytunnel. 4 ADDITIONAL EXTRAS Choice of doors The Tunnel price includes roll-up door blinds for each end of the Tunnel which can be adjusted for ventilation. Hinged or Sliding Door kits are available as an extra in place of these, at one or both ends. Anti Hotspot Tape We recommend the use of this to protect your polythene cover from the metal surfaces when it is hot. It will help prolong the life of the polythene. Crop Bars Can be used as crop support and for hanging baskets. They also help brace the tunnel in windy and snowy conditions, adding 20% or more extra strength when a full set is fitted. Anchor Plates These are fitted to the Foundation tubes when using a Timber Base rail. They come complete with clamps for fitting. You do not require these if you decide to concrete in the Foundation Tubes. Side Vent Kit A side vent allows the control of ventilation down the length of the tunnel. Side vent is supplied per side, if ventilation is required both sides then two kits are needed. Supplied with a mid rail. Base rail not included. Ground Sockets Are used where you wish to fix your Polytunnel to a concrete base. You need to ensure that the concrete is thick, and sound enough to be sure of a secure fixing. These are used in place of the foundation tubes. Roll-up Side Kit This is the deluxe side vent kit. Supplied with a wind up gear box, this kit allows easy control of your tunnel s ventilation. Wind-up Vent Kits are supplied per side, if ventilation is required both sides then two kits are needed. Base rail not included. Overhead Irrigation The use of a hosepipe can lead to irregular watering. An overhead irrigation system in your polytunnel can save you time, and your plants. Using 20mm polyethylene pipe with a weighted down tube. The system requires 2 bars pressure. 5 What will you need to put up a polytunnel? The following tools may be needed. A spade, pegs and string for marking out, lump hammer, spanners or a socket set, screwdrivers (flat head and pozidrive), Stanley knife or scissors for cutting the polythene and a step ladder for reaching the ridge on the bigger tunnels. Drill and bits will be required when fitting doors, frames and timber base rails. QUESTIONS This is an example of an 8ft tunnel packed and ready to go. How is a Polytunnel put up? You will receive a detailed set of instructions with your Polytunnel Kit, but the following gives a brief guide to construction. Firstly mark out where the foundation tubes or ground sockets are to go, and then set them in place. Next fit the hoops onto the foundation tubes then fit the clamps and clips in place. Starting at one end of the Polytunnel fit the ridge tubes and hoops together, using the sleeve joiners. Brace bars are fitted in each corner. Door frames are fitted and attached. The trenches are then dug (or the base rail fitted) and you will have something looking like the first picture below. Last but not least the cover is fitted. 6 POLYTHENE SPECIFICATION Covers Sterilite Super Thermic Diffused Benefits from an 8 year UVI package with a 5 year UVI breakdown guarantee and contains a special anti drip additive (AF) to reduce condensation in the tunnel. It incorporates the latest (MLLDPE) SuperStrength polymer technology to give a film which is stronger and more gale resistant than some films which are up to 50% thicker and with a light transmission of ~88%. Its special temperature control properties (TCF) will keep the tunnel cooler in the summer than other thermic or clear films, and because of its exclusive SuperThermic additive it will be warmer in the winter, extending the growing season into the Autumn and bringing it forward in the Spring. Used by many of the countries organic and exhibition growers it won the Four Oaks Trade Show best new product award 1996 for its ability to reduce Aphids and Whitefly as well as fungal diseases such as downy mildew and botrytis. SunMaster Diffused Benefits from an 8 year UVI package with a 5 year UVI breakdown guarantee and contains a special anti drip additive (AF) to reduce condensation in the tunnel. It extends the season in the Autumn and brings it forward in Spring and even though it is not a SuperThermic cover it will give some Frost protection as well. It will also be cooler inside your tunnel in hot weather than clear films. Its ability to allow the same amount of UV into the tunnel as your plants get outside gives speedier rooting, and stronger bushier plants. Research has shown that edible crops grown under full UV conditions contain more antioxidants than crops grown under normal polythene or glass. We can supply other types of polythene such as, Sunmaster SuperThermic which has similar properties to the Sterilite but allows the UV light through, Smart Blue for growth control without the need for chemicals, Smart Green for shade loving plants and Sunmaster Clear when full sunlight is needed. 26 Questions and Answers Terms and Conditions We endeavour to complete delivery within 10 working days unless otherwise advised. However no liability can be accepted if circumstances prevent this. We will not accept consequential losses due to late delivery. Refund and Cancellation Terms You are entitled to cancel an order and return goods within 7 working days for a full refund. You are responsible for the cost and risk of damage when returning the goods. Any goods returned must be in a resalable condition. is only returnable if it has not been opened. We may at our discretion charge a restocking charge of no more than 15% of the value of the invoice. Polytunnels made to a special order are not returnable except by special arrangement. All goods leave our works in good condition and any damage or missing items should be notified to the carrier on delivery and we need to be notified within 3 working days, so that the problem can be rectified. Faulty Goods In the unlikely event of you recieving faulty goods, they will be replaced or refunded, provided we are notified within 10 working days. Refunds will only be made after the faulty goods have been inspected. Payment Terms Payment is required in full by credit /debit card or cleared cheque before dispatch of the order. Do Polytunnels Blow Away? No. Many people believe that they cannot have a polytunnel as their garden or allotment is a very windy site. If constructed according to the instructions, a polytunnel will give many years of use. When constructing a polytunnel it is important to ensure that the framework is well anchored to the ground and, most importantly, that the polythene cover is tight. For those sites exposed to extreme weather conditions, we recommend our range of Tuff Tunnels. Concreting in the Foundation Tubes, fitting extra brace bars and adding crop bars, will improve the strength. What Happens if my Tears? The polythene used for polytunnel covers is very strong and will not readily tear or split. Accidental holes can happen, these are easily repaired with a UV resistant repair tape. Can My Polytunnel Be Extended? Yes. A polytunnel can be moved and extended, although we would suggest this is done when the polythene cover requires replacing. Do You Sell Spare Parts? 27 How Long Will A Polytunnel Last? There is no reason why our galvanised steel polytunnel frames would not last 20 years and more. The polythene cover will need replacing, although the polythene supplied has been developed with resistance against sunlight. The additives in a polytunnel cover prevent UV degradation for up to 5 years and it is not uncommon for a cover to last 8-10 years. Do I Need Planning Permission For atunnel? Normally you do not need planning permission for a domestic size or garden polytunnel. If the polytunnel meets with any of the following criteria, you should contact your local planning department to determine if planning permission is required. In general you do not need planning permission for polytunnels. However you will need to apply for planning permission if the polytunnel is nearer to any road than the nearest part of the house, unless there s at least 20m between the polytunnel and a road If the polytunnel would have any part forward of the front of the house. If the polytunnel would be more than 3m in height. If the polytunnel is to be sited in a field, then change of use may apply If the site on which you intend to construct the polytunnel has a listed building or is in a Conservation Area, a National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, There are further restrictions to planning within these areas.
