1 December 2010: Temperature & Icewine Hours Summary Prince Edward County WIN Staff January 13, 2011
2 OVERVIEW A colder than normal December 2010 meant an early harvest for producers in the Prince Edward County appellation, who chose to make icewine this year. The average monthly temperature was -4.1 C at both and : 1.1 C below normal. This is in contrast to December 2009, where conditions were slightly above normal: 0.5 C above normal at and 0.2 C above normal at. These statistics are based on Environment Canada s 30-year normal for Picton. This summary illustrates minimum December 2010 temperatures, as well as the icewine harvest opportunities that arose. For this report, icewine hours are defined as instances when the average hourly temperature was between 8.0ºC and 12.0ºC, inclusive. Events are focused at opportunities encompassing a minimum 6 hour period.
3 2 TEMPERATURE ANALYSIS The monthly minimum temperature for each site in December 2010 was -14.4ºC at the station (compared to -18.0ºC in December 2009) and -16.9ºC at the station (compared to -18.1ºC in December 2009). Therefore, although average temperatures for December 2010 were colder than in December 2009, the monthly minimum temperatures remained warmer. There were 18 days when temperatures, at one or more stations, dipped into ice wine temperature ranges (compared to only 12 days in December 2009). PEC: December 2010 Daily Minimums 1-Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec Dec
4 ICEWINE HOURS ANALYSIS There were a high number of suitably cold hours at each location for harvesting icewine grapes in December 2010; nearly twice as many hours as the previous December! The station recorded 125 hours (compared to 67 hours in December 2009) and the station recorded 126 hours (compared to 63 hours in December 2009). The monthly accumulation of icewine hours between the two stations varied minimally in both December 2009 and 2010, as seen in the following figure. 3 SUMMARY December 2010 temperatures were below normal; average temperatures for the month were 1.1 C below the 30-year normal for Picton. The coldest December event took place on the 21 st of December, reaching -16.9ºC at the station. This was actually warmer than the previous year when the coldest December event reached -18.1ºC at the station. There were 18 days when temperatures, at one or more stations, dipped into ice wine temperature ranges. These conditions provided an early harvest for growers who chose to produce icewine this year. In addition, the monthly minimum was reasonably warm, rendering nearly ideal December conditions for 2010.
