1 January 2015 Newsletter Stoney Nakoda Nation Interim Housing Update Interim Housing as we know it, Wesley Park, Chiniki Flats and Bearspaw Park has changed. Wesley Park has closed and the trailers are gone. Chiniki Flats and Bearspaw Park is scheduled to close this week. Interim Housing now includes the Elders Lodges, Park Model homes and large winterized Travel trailers. The residents who will have priority to the Elders lodges are flood impacted families who have been identified to receive a replacement home. The Wesley Elders Lodge referred to as the North Lodge and the Chiniki Bearspaw Elders Lodge the South Lodge have both been repaired and newly furnished. A family s Band membership does not determine which lodge they go to. It is whichever lodge has the space for the size of the family. 2 Flood Respite Weekends are Here Again FREE Family weekends at Camp Chief Hector YMCA for all families affected by the 2013 Southern Alberta floods. These weekends are open to RMT staff and their families as well. The weekends are the perfect opportunity for families to get out and have some fun or to simply relax. There are a number of activities such as high ropes, arts and crafts, archery, hiking, etc that happen depending on the weather. If you prefer to sit back and draw or read a good book you can do this. If you are interested talk to one of the Interim Housing Liaisons or come to the RCC and sign up.

All the positions will be located at Morley and are needed to support the daily operations and maintenance of Interim Housing. Recovery Management Team welcomes Lawrence Frencheater as the new Interim Housing Coordinator and Christie Simmons as the new Housing Integration Lead. Lawrence is responsible for all activities relating to interim housing including the family move-ins to and move-outs from, interim housing. All residents in interim housing can expect to see a lot of Lawrence. Christie is responsible for ensuring the various steps and activities that are part of repairing a home or setting up a replacement home happens in a timely fashion reducing the time families are out of their homes. Lawrence, Christie and the rest of the RMT are here to help flood impacted families in their transition period as well as support the Nation leadership in their flood recovery efforts.

4 HOME MAINTENANCE TIPS Each Newsletter we will share some basic maintenance tips that you can easily do yourself and that will keep your home in better shape. Let s Start with Plumbing In order to keep water flowing freely through your pipes never pour fats or other oils down your drains. This includes oils that are not solid at room temperature. If you accidentally spill oils or fats down the drain, run hot water down your drain along with a healthy serving of dishwashing liquid. The soap will emulsify the fat or oil and move it on down the pipe, preventing a clog. Get a hair strainer for the bathtub drain. If you have a strainer, make sure that you remove any accumulated hair from it following each shower. This will reduce the amount of hair that finds its way through the strainer and into your plumbing. Skip the Draino. Though the acids it contains can help unclog a drain, they also cause significant damage to your plumbing, including premature leaking. This can lead to costly repairs later on. Flush only the right stuff; human waste and toilet paper. When you flush the wrong stuff like diapers, grease, wipes and other wrong things basement and sewer back-ups occur. Repair and maintenance is then required and this costs money. Prevent sewer backup and save money. FLUSH ONLY THE RIGHT STUFF.
