7 Contents of a Scottish Borders Country House The following collection of furniture, porcelain, sculpture, clocks and works of art represents a style and taste grounded in the Belle Époque, the period in French history covering the late 19th century through to the beginning of the 20th. Coming to sale from a mansion house in the Scottish Borders, this group of items represents a time when interiors were filled with art and artefacts that came from all across the globe. An item s worth was judged by its beauty rather than its usefulness, and a collection by its scope rather than the merits of one or two pieces. In this collection sensuous French marble and bronze figures sit beside exotic Middle Eastern intarsia, while delicate German porcelain is contrasted by early Spanish earthenware, creating a rich kaleidescope of colour, form, and material. Highlights from the collection include a fine quality 19th century Louis XIV style boulle marquetry commode, lot 40; a marble figure of a dreamy young woman by the renowned French sculptor Hippolyte Francois Moreau, lot 27; and lot 145, a remarkable 3rd century AD Roman mosaic of a leaping deer. Also included are no less than twenty-two clocks, mostly French and late 19th century, but the stand-out lot is an early 18th century Queen Anne marquetry long case by Joseph Saer of London, lot 112. While this collection draws its content from around the world, with a particular eye to France, Scottish works of art are also represented. An impressive white marble bust by John Evan Thomas ( ), lot 121, depicting arguably the most famous Scotsman of the 19th century, Sir Walter Scott, is of particular interest. 1 HB650/172 ALBERT-ERNEST CARRIER-BELLEUSE ( ) DANSEURS NAPOLITAIN bronze, light brown/green patina, one figure with a tambourine, the other a lute, on signed circular bases, A.CARRIER (2) 26cm high and 28cm high 1,000-1,500 2 HB650/230 FRENCH GILT AND SILVERED METAL THREE PIECE CLOCK GARNITURE the clock with an urn finial above painted porcelain dial with Arabic numbers in a case with painted porcelain plaques with foliate reserves and elephant mask handles, the eight day movement striking on a bell, on a gilt wood and velvet base, 32cm high, base 25.5cm wide; the matching porcelain urns with metal mounts, on circular bases, 26.5cm high (3) 1,500-2,500

The original model by Chantrey was executed after requesting a sitting with Scott in Dissatisfied with his original clay composition, the sculptor reportedly took a wire to the neck and re-positioned the head in its current place, facing to the left. A plaster cast of the bust was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1821 and the marble version was completed in In 1828 it was presented to Scott by the artist and now resides in the library at Abbotsford. A second version by Chantrey was commissioned by the Duke of Wellington in 1821 and completed in It is now located in the collection at Stratfield Saye, the Duke of Wellington s estate on the Hampshire/Berkshire border. A third revised version, started in 1828 and known as the Peel bust, is now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. John Evan Thomas started his apprenticeship in Chantrey s studio in 1824 at the age of fourteen and would certainly have been there while both the Abbotsford and Wellington busts were being carved and it is likely that Thomas has some hand in their creation. 6,000-9,000

186 We understand that your collection is worth more than the sum of its parts. Collections sell better as collections. That belief is at the heart of our approach to auctioneering. Over the course of our long history, we have seen this borne out time and time again: from the contents of grand homes to corporate collections, from contemporary art to Chinese snuff bottles; there is little we have not handled and sold well. Each collection is unique and often has an emotional connection to the owners who create or inherit them. Our team work closely with our clients to provide a carefully tailored approach to the sale of their collections. Personal, passionate and professional - we deliver outstanding results.
