The location, once the site of coal and steel industries, is developing into a thriving centre for high-tech companies, media businesses and service enterprises. The 1,800 m 2 of effective area of the Light Cube have been adapted to the needs of the multimedia branch. The external skin made of GKD stainless steel wire mesh can be seen from afar and plays an optically spectacular role. Like a giant monolith, the cube towers over the embanments of the river Saar in the west of Saarbrücken. As the sun moves across the sky, the façade of stainless steel wire mesh changes from a monochrome grey in the early morning light to a glisteningly bright, cool silver at noon. In the evening light, it glows with a warm, shiny gold-orange colour, and then, at night, it is transformed into a screen for extraordinary lightshows with computer-generated colours and shapes. The two sports halls are embedded like amphitheatres about 17 meters deep in the 100,000 m 2 large urban parkscape. In the middle of this garden with its 500 apple trees, the roofs of the stadiums rise up, the one round, the other square, like tables covered with tablecloths. These tablecloths are made of GKD metallic mesh which falls like drapery over the edges of the roofs and down towards the ground. Here, single individual elements were fastened to a support construction, connected to each other with tension springs, and installed one by one onto the roof. It is transsected by a five-storey administrative wing which divides the building into an east and a west half. Here, all-round glazing and a semitransparent suspended roof create an impression of openness and permeability which is characteristic of the architecture of the whole Autostadt. Bibliothèque Nationale: reading room with arched ceiling (30) Bibliothèque Nationale: ventilator detail (31) The Bibliothèque Nationale was the first project in which largescale use was made of GKD metallic fabrics for interior design. In the reading rooms of the library, for example, where stainless steel wire meshes form the vast suspended ceilings, here tensioned flat, there hung in regular arches, the metallic meshes radiate a pleasant atmosphere of peace and concentration. 7 2.4 Walls/partition walls Terminal 2E, Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris ADP / Paul Andreu, Paris Lago > Mesh group 2 Roundbar with eye-bolts > Panels with roundbar Charles de Gaulle Airport (33) In the new Terminal 2E of the Charles de Gaulle Airport, a semitransparent partition wall was installed made of the GKD stainless steel wire mesh type Lago. The wall is approx. 100 meters long and up to 5 meters high. Looked at straight on, the mesh retains a certain degree of transparency; looked at from an angle, it becomes increasingly opaque. This metallic fabric is stable enough to be simply installed in frames without any further support. Charles de Gaulle Airport (34) The metallic mesh is used primarily to mask the rock wool acoustic insulation panels and also to give uniform structure to the wall, which extends over two storeys. The mesh also runs past the windows of offices located behind it and has the function of allowing the office workers a clear view of what is happening in the arrivals hall while at the same time, lit appropriately from the front, of preventing the public from looking into the offices. 8 2.4 Walls/partition walls Media Plaza, Utrecht Ellen Sander, Rotterdam s Omega 1510, Omega 3380, Tatami > Mesh group 3 Individual fasteners > Panels with individual hangers Roundbar with eye-bolts > Panels with roundbar Media Plaza Utrecht: media tunnel (37) The tunnel cladding, made of the GKD mesh type Tatami, is fastened at individual points to a curved support construction no problem, thanks to the flexibility of the mesh along its warp cables. The partition walls of Omega 1510 mesh are fitted with roundbars inserted at the top and the bottom end and are tensioned in this way between the ceiling and the floor. Illumination of the mesh with coloured lights creates a futuristic atmosphere in the tunnel, and elsewhere an impression of golden surfaces. Media Plaza Utrecht: partition wall and media tunnel (38) Originally planned as an interim structure, the building has remained an attractive magnet for visitors ever since: the information centre for internet use in the Exhibition Centre Utrecht visualizes the transfer into future worlds. Through a tunnel lined with stainless steel wire mesh, visitors reach the foyer, where there is a wide vaulted ceiling made of Omega 3380 mesh and where semitransparent partition walls create separate zones without obstructing lines of sight. 9 2.5 Balustrades Peckham Library, London William Alsop and Jan Störmer, London and Hamburg Sambesi 450 > Mesh group 2 Angle-flat-clamping with threaded rods > Panels with clamping profile The L-shape of the building creates a sheltered forecourt over which the hall of the library hall floats as a cantilever on steel supports. Set in the hall are organically shaped pods into which visitors can withdraw to read without disturbance. Peckham Library: cladding of a spiral staircase (40) Southern façade of Peckham Library at night (41) The walls of the library are clad on three sides with patinated copper; the north façade of the building is colour-glazed. In addition to the balustrade cladding inside the library, the recessed part of the south façade and the underside of the cantilevered library hall are clad in a zigzag pattern with Futura 3110 mesh. The GKD mesh type Sambesi 450 for the cladding of a staircase was distorted so that the warp cables run parallel to the stairs. Peckham Library and the Peckham Media Centre are part of a program to revitalize London s rather unattractive Borough of Peckham. Alsop & Störmer were chosen for the 7.2 million dollar project because of their bold and sophisticated design philosophy. Southwark Education and Leisure Services awarded them the contract to create a building which would be an architectural milestone and would give the borough prestige and a much needed boost of confidence. 10 2.5 Balustrades 2, Broadway, New York S.O.M., New York Mesh Type Tatami > Mesh Group 3 Special clamping profile Many types of metallic mesh are suitable for the cladding of elevator cabin walls, especially the GKD mesh type Tatami. This mesh has a concisely patterned, closed surface. The advantage of this is that such a surface is scratchproof and resistant to fingerprints. This makes it the ideal choice for all applications where the material is exposed to daily use by many people. The wall cladding in the elevator cabins was accomplished using the stainless steel wire mesh Tatami. 2, Broadway: interior of the elevator cabin (43) Their fire resistance, practically unlimited service life and low maintenance requirements qualify metallic meshes to meet the functional requirements of such transit spaces. It thus creates a stimulating context for sales talks and discussions. The reflective brilliance of the material supports the presentation of wares and makes a strong statement about their high quality. For Nissan s exhibition stand at the Automobilsalon Geneva 2000, expansive ceilings, walls and floor coverings were designed to reflect the high-tech, exclusive image of this automotive brand. The main message of this presentation was that, in terms of floors, walls, ceilings as well as partition screens and counter cladding, GKD stainless steel wire mesh is robust and durable while at the same time leaving scope for individual design ideas. Its formability, the optical effects which can be achieved with lights and colours, and the possible material combinations mean that a variety of atmospheres with timeless quality can be created. The practically unlimited service life and 100 percent recyclability of GKD stainless steel wire mesh fulfils the demands of modern facility management for value and uncomplicated maintenance. 12 2.7 Column claddings Cemex Cementos Maya S.A., Monterrey Nicholas Grimshaw, London Sambesi 450 > Mesh Group 2 Clamping profile > Edge treatment Cemex is the largest producer of cement in Mexico. GKD s task was to design a representative, futuristic look for the new administrative headquarters which would reflect the image and the vision of the company. The interplay of colours and materials gives the rooms a futuristic look. Cemex Cementos Maya S.A.: column cladding (48) Cemex Cementos Maya S.A.: main computer center (49) The building is a one-storey white box with few windows, partly for climatic, partly for security reasons. Visitors take in a sequence of different rooms on their way through the building: an experience with almost theatrical dimensions. In this project, the column claddings were attached to a support construction. This balanced out irregularities in the raw structure of the columns and made it possible to simply screw the metallic mesh with flats to the support construction. In this application, the weft wires always run vertical, thus ensuring that the mesh edges at the top and the base are straight.

13 2.8 Roller shutters Pleasure Dome Entertainment Center, Vienna Prof. Rüdiger Lainer, Vienna Sambesi 450 > Mesh group 2 Roller shutter The Pleasure Dome is located right in front of Vienna s gasometers. The total volume of the complex is predominantly characterized by an enveloping veil of GKD metallic fabric behind which a variety of structural shapes rises up. It is a grand urban sculpture seeking a relation with the city surrounding it. The photo shows how the roller shutters, made of the highly stable stainless steel wire mesh Sambesi 450, can be rolled up into a small diameter. Pleasure Dome Entertainment Center: roller shutter open (50) Pleasure Dome Entertainment Center: Ten roller shutters made of Sambesi 450 are used to close the cinema entrances and shops. (51) Behind the transparent cladding of metallic mesh, twelve cinema auditoriums are stacked up like rocks. The foyers and access areas are spread out between these auditoriums. Vertical and horizontal lines of sight allow clear views of the structures of the individual cinema auditoriums with their grand, sweeping undersides, and of the volume of the cinema complex as a whole. On the uppermost access level of the cinema complex begins the Entertainment Mall, which offers three floors of entertainment, gastronomy and shopping facilities as well as a variety of access opportunities to terraces and roof gardens.
