2 Residence 9 - Flush Sash Window System Residence 9 is a new window system designed to replicate a 19th century flush sash timber window. Its aesthetic values appeal to most homeowners who require all the benefits of a modern window system, but still want to retain the character of their period property. The authentic construction means it can even be considered for conservation areas. Residence 9 is manufactured from a virtually maintenance free PVCu which means it won t warp, swell, flake or require sanding and painting. The mechanically jointed system can accommodate 28mm double or 44mm triple glazing resulting in market leading thermal and acoustic performance. Although aimed primarily at the heritage market, this unique and bespoke window system would not look out of place in any building due to its classic lines and beautiful finish. The Residence 9 system is available in a broad colour palette, with colours and finishes chosen that were traditional and in keeping with 19th Century painted windows. 3 Traditional Aesthetics, Modern Technology From cottages to townhouses, the Residence 9 system has matched historical design and considered Article 4 Conservation Area Guidelines. So no matter what style of property, Residence 9 will always blend in seamlessly. Village Life Residence 9 has been designed to replicate the flush sash designs found in many cottage properties and villages. It enables windows to be replaced with an authentic design without losing the character appearance and feel of the period. Period Living Many city properties were built with sash windows at street level and flush casements in the upper floors; these windows were usually tall and grand. Residence 9 is designed for this application and can be manufactured to match the existing frames. The Town House The windows in an old townhouse are likely to be single glazed, drafty and in need of regular maintenance. With Residence 9 these problems can be resolved and will enhance a property without detriment to the period features of the house. U-Values Profile Section The 100mm deep, 9 chamber frame design gives U-values of 1.2 W/m 2 K and 0.8 W/m 2 K which are standard with 28mm and 44mm argon filled units. A Rated. 4 Residence 9 - System Features Handles Residence 9 Windows can be personalised with a choice of handles. Period Monkeytail designs are popular and classic Peardrop and Teardrop designs are also available. Monkey Tail Peardrop Teardrop Traditional Astragal Bar The Residence 9 window is available with beautiful slim sections typical of the 18th Century, when glazing bars became slimmer as glass technology improved. The bespoke sections of our Residence 9 window system are hand applied by Craftsmen to create the traditional Astragal lattice work found in many period properties. The mouldings replicate the deep decorative detailing inside and the chamfered putty line outside. Authentic Butt Hinge With the Residence 9 window system you can specify traditional butt hinges to maintain the look of original features. Modern windows can often lack this character as the hinges are hidden. The authentic ironmongery used is crucial to maintaining an authentic kerbside appearance. 4

5 Hand Finished Detailing 19th Century timber windows were hand crafted. In order to replicate the features of this window style, Residence 9 combines the repeatability of modern machining processes with the eye of a craftsman. These skilled craftsmen can manufacture windows to precise sizing and specifications. Because of this, nearly everything on a Residence 9 window can be customised including the style, colour and hardware. Only by replacing mass production machinery with craftsmen can you achieve the traditional jointing features, which stand the Residence 9 system apart from other modern mitred alternatives. The mechanical joints require finesse and attention to detail and can only be executed with hand finishing by individuals who are masters of their trade. Weather Bar Old timber windows often had a raised moulding that ran horizontally across the transom. Its function was to shed dripping water and increase strength. Deep Decorative Detailing The internal shape and depth of a Residence 9 window is authentic and gives an elegant and distinctive deep appearance to the strong sections. The system uses a 100mm frame depth whereas most modern windows are only 70mm. Flush Sash Butt Joints The Residence 9 system has been designed with a flush sash and traditional butt joints. This can only be achieved with craftsmen. Foiled Rebates The System has been designed with an easy clean rebate which is colour matched to the window. The design avoids sharp corners and undercuts that attract dirt. When you open the window, it not only looks the same but is easy to clean. 5

6 Bays & Corner Posts Period properties often have bay windows; these can be authentically recreated using Residence 9 corner posts and joints. Peg Stays Functional peg stays are available and work well with the traditional black butt hinges. Noise & Thermal Insulation The Residence 9 system can be upgraded to significantly reduce noise pollution. By specifying triple glazing for use with our 9 chambered frame design you can achieve market-leading performance for sound and thermal insulation. Traditional Jointing Timber windows have always been joined in a certain way. With the Residence 9 system these joints have been authentically replicated. Modern Aluminium and PVCu windows are almost always joined diagonally so with Residence 9 you can achieve the traditional appearance of a timber window but in a maintenance free material. 6

7 Residence 9 - Technology The design brief for Residence 9 was to extract the key design principles, shapes and dimensions from the Article 4 Conservation Area Guidelines for windows and integrate market-leading technology into the design using virtually maintenance free materials. Residence 9 features the latest security innovations, easy clean attributes and yet still looks like the original timber, without warping, swelling and with no need to sand or paint. Lock & Hinge Retention Residence 9 is made to CEN A wall thicknesses which is the thickest classification in Europe. Together with localised design details and further high screw retention reinforcements, the system is able to hold the best lock and hinges firmly into position. The weight of triple glazing is significant but the Residence 9 system has been engineered to accommodate this, including larger hinges that are stronger and can take more weight. 9 Chamber Design The Residence 9 frame has been reverse engineered to meet current and future standards. Normal window frames have 3, 5 or sometimes 6 chambers and are usually 70mm or up to 82mm wide. Residence 9 has 9 chambers and is 100mm helping to achieve market leading performance. Glass Bonding The mechanically jointed sashes on a Residence 9 window are glass bonded (shown in red). With the glass bonded to the sash and with the bead on the inside, it makes removal of the glass by a burglar very difficult. Glass bonding also strengthens the sash so it can resist racking forces, which notoriously lead to the sash being difficult to open. Residence 9 - Security Residence 9 is available with a full range of security device options for lock and hinge side to ensure that the highest security standards can be met. The product meets the CEN A (highest) classification for wall thickness, the frame is 100mm thick and the glass is structually bonded to the sash. This specification, when combined with the best quality locks and hinges achieves a very high performance. 7
