Responsible for the store design, windows, visual merchandising strategies and Point of Sale/package design for the department store chain over a 10 year period. Both Lynda and her team won several industry awards and in the last two years, since leaving House of Fraser and starting her own business, Lynda has judged the Retail Visual merchandising awards for the industry. 6 WINDOW LAYOUT BACKGROUND MID GROUND FOREGROUND Plan your window design to include three tiers 1. Background 2. Mid ground 3. Foreground

7 BACKGROUND This could be the back wall of your window or a back drop that you install. The purpose of the background is to focus your eye on the display rather than the busy environment of the shop behind. If you have a back wall this can be painted into a seasonal colour to provide interest or you could attach graphics/decals to create the right mood. If not consider hanging a banner or decorations to cover or partially cover the back of your window.

8 BACKGROUNDS You can create an effective background to your display by hanging a simple banner, a decorative garland or suspending decorative items from the ceiling.

9 BACKGROUNDS In these examples the back of the window on the right has been covered with lots of bauble boxes which creates an effective backdrop and shows off the product. The window on the right has been left partially see through but note how the orange bauble tree as been positioned behind the bust forms to create a backdrop, using the orange pulls your attention to the bust forms.

10 MID GROUND The mid ground consists of your window kit (basis to build your displays on) and the products you want to dress/promote. A key component in the mid ground is to ensure you group the basic kit correctly first. We will cover this in detail in our groupings section

11 MID GROUND Here simple white podiums have been used in varying heights to display products on. They have been grouped in a triangle, taller to the back shorter to the front, we will talk more about this style of grouping in later slides.

12 MID GROUND In this example Mannequins have been used to display cloths, they have used huge lanterns as decorations but also to display products inside them.

13 FOREGROUND The foreground of the window display is generally the glass The glass can be used to help create depth and perspective to your display by adding 3d effects or decals (stickers) onto the glass. In this example the window has been made to look smaller by covering all the sides with a frame effect which focuses your attention on the central display.

14 FOREGROUND The decals should support and enhance your theme.

15 FOREGROUND Here a simple Merry Christmas decal [sticker] has been used to set the scene.

It is the combination of these elements that create the scheme for your window.

17 TRIANGULAR GROUPING - symmetric In this example the grouping is completely symmetrical which gives a totally balanced look to the display. A symmetrical triangle. Note how each podium is mirrored to the left and right, giving a tiered effect. The backdrop is positioned directly behind the podiums to help focus your eye on the products that will be displayed.

18 TRIANGULAR GROUPING - symmetric Again, you can achieve the same principle using any display kit. Here you can see the same principle using bust forms. To achieve the height variation busts can be set on podiums or ( if the type allows ) you can lower the stands.

19 TRIANGULAR GROUPING - asymmetric Triangular groupings are the easiest and simplest way to create a strong display. This ensures you create both height and depth to your display. Here the triangular grouping is asymmetrical, which just means it is positioned to one side of the window either right or left. This works well if your customer flow is either from the right or the left, if customer flow is from the right position kit to the left and vice versa. Probably the most important trick of the trade as you can use this principle to form the basis of your display with your kit and when you come to dress your products.

20 TRIANGULAR GROUPING - asymmetric This same principle applies to any type of window. Here you can see the same principle using fashion mannequins.

21 GROUPINGS - repetition The other grouping style is known as repetition. As you can see this principle is based on complete symmetry and balance and uses the same item repeated in a simple grid format. This is a very easy format to achieve but does require precise positioning otherwise the effect is lost

22 GROUPINGS - repetition Here is exactly the same principle being applied to a fashion window.

23 CHRISTMAS WINDOW IDEAS Here are lots of photo examples for you to use as inspiration for your Christmas displays.

24 Gift Boxes Gift wrapped boxes can make a stunning statement Keep to a simple colour theme and avoid too much pattern

25 Window Stickers These snowflakes have been used to focus your attention on the advent calendar. Its a great way to reduce the space in your window if you have small or no products to show.

26 Window Stickers Snowflakes will work for any style of window. Simply use them as a border.

27 Window Stickers Or use giant ones just in the corners of your window

28 Framing Your Display Garlands are a great decoration to frame displays and draw attention to the picture you have created. Use a style to suit your product.

29 Hanging Decorations This scheme mixes mirror balls with chrome spheres to create a stunning effect This would work equally well with just the top or bottom treatment only.

30 Hanging Decorations Simply tie baubles onto ribbon and hang across your windows. But use lots of them to create a strong look.

31 Hanging Decorations Vintage style paper decorations are back on trend. They are relatively inexpensive and a great way to get impact for a seasonal scheme. Keep to a tonal colour theme and use oversize decorations or groups of small ones

32 Hanging Decorations Great example of symmetry used in window display. The colours all work together to give a great overall look. They have even put a Christmas door mat outside the entrance.

33 Quirky Backdrops This scheme uses pieces of tin foil cut into strips and hung on wire or nylon thread. Simple and stunning

34 Quirky Decorations This is another example of using a simple item this time its florists pull ribbons Covering the whole wall and keeping to one colour adds drama This would work equally well on a free standing screen or a hanging panel

35 Crystal Droplets These strings of glass beads have been hung from ceiling to floor and for an added WOW factor they have added mirror behind to multiply the effect. Simply stunning to show off the simply stunning dress!!

36 Quirky Decorations This is a simple sophisticated scheme using standard baubles in one colour Simply add ribbon to each one and then group them together and hang

37 Christmas Foliage Using a real tree is so effective and will give your store a lovely aroma. You could even make some snowballs with the branch off cuts.

38 Trees and Wreathes Real trees make a lovely natural statement. And, you can plant them after Christmas. We love the way the pots have been wrapped like Christmas puddings!

39 Arts and Crafts Windows We loved these handcrafted, snowflakes. So simple yet effective. Some are stuck to the glass and some are hung to fill the space..

40 Christmas Crafting Pine cones can make a great backdrop to your window, just glue or tie them onto clear nylon tread.
