Prereq: Graduate Standing. Lectures: W/F 8:00-10:05 am Course #: 4449 Location: 259 Knowlton Hall Credits: 02 COURSE INTRODUCTION: Grounding Landscape - this course introduces students to the advanced study of landscape architecture through the survey of significant eras, icons, and issues within the discipline. The course begins by constructing a modern definition of landscape architecture from the interests and intentions of the students as they begin their graduate studies. Through the semester student efforts and discussions will explore some of the most prominent and influential figures in the profession. As the course nears completion the class will define topical areas of interest and debate through both in-class discussions and guest presentations by KSA landscape faculty. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Toward developing each students attention to and knowledge of the history, theory, language, and conventions of landscape architecture this course is focused on the following : provide overview of core vocabulary and perspectives in landscape design, research, and practice; offering students experiential learning through site visits and field experience; provide overview of landscape issues particularly as they can be seen in the Ohio landscape; integration with design studio to introduce foundational design skills;

2 ASSIGNMENT BRIEFS: In the News: This assignment asks students to research a landscape related story from a recent popular media source (no trade or professional journals permitted) and present the story for discussion among the class. Students are encouraged to select stories that reflect their own interests and/or experiences with respect to landscape architecture. Media sources may be local, national, or international in nature. Format: 8.5x11 printed/copied here at KSA Assigned: August 22 Due: August 24 Mapping Landscape: This assignment asks students to develop a map of landscape architecture as a discipline. The map is to use images and text to illustrate each student s definition of landscape architecture from those things that root the discipline to those things that lie on it s fringes and overlap with other areas of culture. Does the discipline have single or multiple origins? What areas of the discipline are more or less prominent than others. Format: 11x17 printed here at KSA Assigned: August 24 Due: August 29 Landscape Icons: Working in small groups of 3-4, students are to research a set of iconic figures from landscape architectural history. Introductory reading will situate these individuals in a basic context but student groups are expected to select 2-3 additional readings to further develop the classes awareness of each individual. Student groups will format a visual presentation (power point) and introduce the class to each of the iconic figures through examples of their work. Presentations are to give survey history of each individual but also make an effort to contextualize the group and demonstrate their relationships to each other. Students are required to attend all class meetings and activities. Any medical absence must be documented with the school of architecture prior to the start of the scheduled class meeting. Any absence related to other course commitments/activities must be approved by LA 6400 instructor given no less than one-week notice. Late Work: No late work will be accepted unless an extension is granted by the instructor or the student has an excused absence. In the event of an excused absence all late work is due within 24 hours of the students return to school/class activities. Evaluation: Final grades are based on each student s process, performance, participation, and initiative as demonstrated to the instructor during regular class meetings, discussions, and assignments. All circumstances/reasons must be documented and receive approval from course instructor, section head, and academic advisor prior to the last scheduled class meeting. If a student is given an incomplete they must complete all work, reviews, and/or presentations within the terms determined by the course instructor.

5 Progress Meeting/Report: At the mid-term of the quarter those students in danger of receiving a C or lower will receive a letter of warning from the instructor, a copy of this letter will be provided to the section head as well as the students individual academic advisor if different from course instructor. Regardless of performance, each student is to arrange a meeting with the instructor at the mid-term to discuss their performance; every effort will be made to arrange these meetings in a timely fashion. Project Archiving: Faculty reserve the right to archive student work for the purposes of accreditation, display, and/or future teaching use. All students are to provide the instructor with a digital record (CD/DVD) of their project(s) at the end of the term. CD titles should include the students name, course number, and term of course (ex. J_Smith_6400_AU12). Course Expenses: Students are expected to cover cost of all necessary course expenses including travel. Syllabus Changes: Faculty reserve the right to modify, alter, delete, add, or otherwise change the contents of this syllabus at any time during the quarter upon proper notification to all students enrolled in the course. Office Hours: Regular office hours are scheduled throughout the quarter so that students may consult with the instructor about specific questions and/or issues they have related to course work, academic performance, professional advice, etc. It is appreciated, although not required, that students sign-up for individual meetings ahead of time. If a student simply stops in they should be prepared to defer to those students with prearranged meeting times. Studio Clean-up & Conditions: Students are responsible for keeping their areas clean and floors free of obstructions. Each Friday, studios will clear floors of all materials, and place this material in trash bags and the appropriate containers throughout the studio. At the end of the quarter, each studio will remove all material (including models, constructions, and drawings), place this material in the loading dock dumpsters, sweep the floors including beneath desks and credenzas, and return oval tables, desks, and chairs to their rightful places. Grades will be withheld from all students in any studio that does not comply by 5PM on the Monday of final exam week. Academic Misconduct: The Student Code of Conduct defines Academic Misconduct as: Any activity that tends to compromise the academic integrity of the university, or subvert the educational process. All students are required to review the code and understand the implications of a code violation. If there is any suspicion of academic misconduct, the faculty member/instructor will report the alleged violation to the Section Head and the Committee on Academic Misconduct for investigation and any further action. Other Misconduct includes damage to, alteration of or other improper use of University Equipment and Property. The facilities of Knowlton Hall are for your use, but they are also for the use of students who come after you. Please take appropriate care in your use of the facilities. Sexual Harassment: O.S.U. s Sexual Harassment policy, which applies to all faculty, staff, and students, includes lewd remarks and inappropriate comments made in the studio environment, classroom, and computer labs as well as the display of inappropriate sexually oriented materials in a location where others can see it. Students can file a complaint by contacting Student Judicial Affairs at Sanctions include reprimand, suspension, and dismissal from the University. Students with Disabilities: If a student requires accommodation for a disability, he or she should immediately arrange an appointment with the professors and the Office for Disability Services. At the appointment, the professors, disability counselors, and student can discuss the course format, anticipate needs and decide upon accommodations. Professors rely on the Office for Disability Services for assistance in verifying the need for accommodations and developing accommodation strategies. 6 TEACHING FACULTY: Jason Kentner, RLA Originally from Northeast Ohio, Mr. Kentner received his BLA from The Pennsylvania State University and his MLA from Harvard University s Graduate School of Design. His professional work with the landscape architecture firm Reed Hilderbrand Associates of Watertown MA, involved site design and master planning projects for a variety of private and institutional clients including: Brandeis University, Harvard University, Bennington College, The First Church of Christ Scientists, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, The Arnold Arboretum, and Mount Auburn Cemetery. He has also completed a number of private residential projects and along with his design team of Karen Lewis, Fritz Steiner, and E. Lynn Miller was named a finalist for the Flight 93 National Memorial Competition. In Mr. Kentner served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin where he lead graduate courses in design and landscape technology/construction. In Mr. Kentner joined the KSA faculty as an visiting lecture and in accepted a position as an assistant professor. Most recently Mr. Kentner along with Karen Lewis formed IMPLEMENT a design and research practice. The practice is an evolution of their on-going collaboration that has been previously recognized in numerous design competitions including: Memory Trail (Flight 93 Memorial Competition) sponsored by National Parks Service; 110%Juice (Off-Shore Wind Farm in Nantucket Sound) sponsored by Boston Society of Architects; Inner Space (Urban Design Proposal for alternative street life along Grand Concourse in Bronx, NY) sponsored by Bronx Museum of Art. At present the practice is involved with several local projects including Pizzuti Sculpture Garden, Benchmark Apartments, Marburn Academy, St. Stephen s Courtyard, and City of Columbus Library (Whitehall Branch Location).
