SLU SUPER LANDSCAPE DAYS ALNARP OCTOBER PANEL #1 17/10 // venue: AULAN 14:30-15:45 Panel Discussion #1 Moderator: Tiina Sarap SLU Landscape Past, Present, Future SLU hosts a great amount of landscape competency in research, education and societal outreach, compared to other similar European institutions. Over the past twenty years, the increasing number of landscape students has also translated into a widening of landscape roles and positions in professional life. The demand for landscape competence to contribute to the development of society, in a broad sense, still seems to be growing. The panelists will reflect on what counts as landscape knowledge/competence, how such knowledge gets developed and disseminated, drawing upon their own professional experience. What different roles can the university and the practice have for continued development? And what can SLU Landscape mean to this effort? Panelists: Håkan Schroeder, Dean LTV Johan Folkesson, Landscape architect, private practice Sabina Jallow, Senior Lecturer, Urban Studies, Malmö University Anna Krook, Process leader, sustainable development, White PANEL #2 18/10 // venue: CRAFOORD 13:00-13:10 Introduce Panel # 2 13:15-14:30 Panel Discussion #2 Moderator: Lisa Diedrich SLU School of Landscape seeding sustainability cultures In 2017 SLU Landscape staff developed the idea for a School of Landscape to understand the opportunities of gathering all SLU landscape programs under one label. Could it strengthen collaboration within SLU and improve external visibility of SLU as a key player in landscape research, education and collaboration arenas, nationally and internationally? This panel collects diverse group of voices to open a discussion with SLU Landscape staff about what a School of Landscape could offer. Panelists: Monica von Schmalensee, Council for Sustainable Cities Sweden Ylva Hilbur, Vice Rector of Internationalisation Lars Johansson, Head of SOL Ultuna Burcu Yigit Turan, Associate Senior Lecturer, SOL Alexander Henriksson, SLU graduate, landscape architect White SLU SUPER LANDSCAPE DAYS ALNARP OCTOBER

PART 1 17/10 (16:00-17:30) 1. THE LANDSCAPE LAB 1:1 Venue: see map for meeting point The workshop The Landscape Lab 1:1 aims at exploring how we as landscape architects can work with active design work on site. The workshop is an attempt to practically explore the relationship between site, representation and the landscape architecture we create. We do this by working with physical models as representation tools and sketching in scale 1:1 directly in the landscape. Alnarp s landscape laboratory Västerskog is used as a test site and as participant of the SLU landscape days you are welcome to attend the workshop. At the main entrance of the Landscape Laboratory you will find tools, a program task and an assigned area. A new train station is being planned next to the laboratory, creating new conditions in the campus area. Your task is to develop the laboratory s main and in extension Alnarp's western entrance. The workshop is part of the courses Landskapsförvaltning & Skötsel av grönytor och naturmarker and the 91 students work in parallel on a series of scenarios in the laboratory. In the afternoon of October 18, the result of the workshop will be shown in an exhibition outside Ateljén in Alnarpsgården around 15:00 october 18th. (outdoor activity) Organized by: Sofi Unnersjö (GoM), Emilia Molin (Land arkitektur), Camilla Doms (Land arkitektur) 2. CLIMATE CHANGE, LOSS OF CONNECTION TO PLACE: SOLASTALGIA AT SLU LANDSCAPE Venue: Wisteria, (1st floor Alnarp castle) This workshop will act as a break out session from Glenn Albrecht s key note presentation. During this session we will have the opportunity to discuss research and education at SLU landscape with Glenn in in light of his work. Focusing on issues of climate change and consequent loss of connection to place, we will have the opportunity to discuss among other aspects: the potential and relevance for lifting these issues in landscape architecture education. ideas and synergies for the Formas call relating to extreme weather. For further information or interest in this session please contact Andrew Butler (Andrew. butler@slu.se) or Ingrid Sarlöv-Herlin (Ingrid.sarlov-herlin@slu.se). 3. ECLAS CONFERENCE 2020 Venue: Nathorst, (1st floor Alnarp castle) In 2020, the annual ECLAS conference will be hosted by the landscape division at the department of urban & rural development, SLU Ultuna. The conference includes, among other things, a doctoral colloquium, key notes, parallel sessions (research and teaching), excursions and conf. dinner. The department, in cooperation with the ECLAS Executive Committee, will be responsible for the program, but your input is needed in order to have a rich set of ideas on
topics, excursions etc. and for being part of working groups for specific tasks! The workshop will include general information about ECLAS and conference routines. Discussion and/or working groups will be set up according to your preferences. Please select topics of interest below (more than one is possible!) and send to Bruno Santesson bruno. if you would like to take part in this workshop. Doctoral colloquium Key note speakers Parallel sessions, topics and review process Excursions Dinner, lunches, logistics etc. Organized by: Bruno Santesson et al. 4. THE RESEARCH DESIGN OF DESIGN RESEARCH SUPPORT FOR STUDENT THESES AND PROJECTS WITHIN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE EDUCATION Venue: Semlan (Alnarpsgården) In this workshop we want to discuss the draft of our guide for the research design of theses and projects within landscape architecture education. Thanks to a Best Practice Grant offered by the LTV faculty in 2017 we engaged in drafting this guide to be used by students, supervisors and examiners. It contains the results of a critical review of different ways that research can be integrated in the design process and forwards examples from academia and practice. We were motivated by the observation that theses on the bachelor and master level within the field of landscape architecture as well as many projects within different courses build on research based knowledge; in addition, they are often design-oriented. These types of theses and projects imply two related challenges: the integration of knowledge in the design process and the description of how this integration took place, i.e. the description of the method. This prompts the following questions which we hope our guide helps to answer: 1. How can research based knowledge be integrated in academic design projects?, and 2. Which models and theories can function as a support to execute and describe design-oriented theses and projects within landscape architecture? Organized by: Märit Jansson, Vera Vicenzotti & Lisa Diedrich 5. COMPETENCE CENTRE FOR NATURE-BASED CITIES (Kompetenscentrum för naturbaserade städer) Venue: Movium (ground floor Alnarp castle) The LTV Faculty currently coordinates a Vinnova application called The Competence Centre for Nature-based Cities. It will build on SLU s leading role in planning, design, construction and management of nature in urban areas. The vision is to build a center to share understanding, new ideas and technologies among cities, citizens, SME s and academia in order to strengthen local networks, build capacity and jointly solve shared problems. The
PART 2 18/10 (09:45-11:45) 6. PROFESSIONAL GAMING AS AN ACTIVITY FOR STIMULATING LEARNING Venue: Art 2 (Articum) We, SLU Urban Futures & GoM theme group, are offering a joined session on professional gaming as an activity for stimulating learning, innovation, reflection and possibly new encounters to tackle our urban futures. We will give a short presentation on so-called serious gaming and get involved in testing the Green Surge game. This should give a thorough introduction for potential use in future educational activities. Note: possibly an extended session (09:30 12:00), information will be distributed in case of extension Organized by: Nina Vogel, SLU Urban Futures & Thomas Randrup, GoM theme group 7. MEANS FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY TEACHING: HANDMADE MODELS AND MAPS IN A PLANNING COURSE Venue: In the corridor (Alnarpsgården) Mapping inspired by Alexander von Humboldt. In the master course Planning Project: Driving Forces and Contemporary Tendencies, we work with integrative methods, to foster field- and representation-studies, theoretical and practical thinking, use of artistic and scientific findings, all serving to merge the understanding of planning-, design-, and management knowledge in landscape architecture. In this workshop, the students display models and printed maps of their coming project area this year being the Campus Alnarp! Gunilla and Marie will provide the thinking and motives behind the including of these modules in the course, and are happy to start and join a discussion around interdisciplinary teaching! 9:45-10:00 Opening! Mingle around with the students exhibiting their models and prints. 10:00-10:30 Gunilla introduces the course, and Marie introduces the assignments: paper model and handcrafted print. 10:30-11:45 Discussion around the exhibition, sharing experiences of interdisciplinary teaching, brainstorming coming collaborations. Organized by: Marie Andersson & Gunilla Lindholm 8. WS 1: PROGRESSION OF DIGITAL TOOLS WITHIN OUR LANDSCAPE PROGRAMS - WHAT DO WE DO? HOW CAN IT BE DEVELOPED? 9. WS 2: PROGRESSION OF WRITING WITHIN OUR LANDSCAPE PROGRAMS - WHAT DO WE DO? HOW CAN IT BE DEVELOPED?
10. WS 3: ORAL FEEDBACK WITHIN OUR EDUCATION AT OUR LANDSCAPE PROGRAMS HOW DOES IT WORK? HOW CAN IT BE DEVELOPED? Venue for no 8, 9 & 10: Group rooms 1st floor, library (Alnarpsgården) SLU LANDSCAPE Teaching Synergy Forum continues to create a space for cross campus discussion and collaboration. This time the discussions focuses on the progression of three chosen themes; we get to discuss how, when and what we do in the landscape programs. The themes of our workshops have been chosen from suggestions collected in previous workshops. Participants choose one of the themes, and are welcome to bring material from their courses to be used as examples.
