Celebrating Renata von Tscharner After almost two decades at the helm, champion of the Charles River and public spaces, Renata von Tscharner is retiring. As Founder and President of the Charles River Conservancy she has had an enormous impact on the parklands and the promise the river holds to offer a public swim park that will be enjoyed for generations to come. Since her training as an architect and city planner at the Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, she has devoted her professional life to urban livability. In 1979 she immigrated to the United States and as a volunteer she has led the movement to make our ribbon of blue, ribbon of green river and parklands more active, attractive and accessible for all. Investing in the future of the Charles River Conservancy is a public statement of gratitude for Renata s inspiring leadership and selfless dedication to our common good. 4 About the Charles River Conservancy Our Mission: The Charles River Conservancy has worked to make the urban river parklands more active, attractive, and accessible since Dedicated to the stewardship, renewal, and enhancement of the urban parklands along the Charles River the Conservancy promotes the active use and vitality of the parklands, increases recreational and cultural opportunities, and works to ensure the beauty and integrity of this extraordinary public resource. The Conservancy works in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), as well as the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), the managing agency of the historic bridges that traverse the Charles, to steward the Charles River parklands from Boston Harbor to the Watertown Dam. A leader in forming public-private partnerships, the Conservancy has successfully leveraged funds for many projects that bring the parklands closer to their world class potential. This includes building the popular Lynch Family Skatepark, organizing volunteer service events, advocating for a cycling/pedestrian underpass at the Anderson Memorial Bridge, hosting community river swims and working to build a Charles River Swim Park. The Conservancy also collaborates with other organizations and coalitions to advocate for increased funding to enhance the landscape, structures, pathways, and amenities of the Charles River Basin. Select Accomplishments: We have engaged volunteers in over 91,000 hours of work to beautify the parklands. We remediated a state-owned brownfield by designing and constructing the 40,000-square-foot Lynch Family Skatepark in North Point Park, under the Zakim Bridge. We returned swimming to the urban Charles for the first time since it was banned in the 1950s. Five years in, City Splash has become a major event each summer with over 1,200 participants. In preparation for the Swim Park, we partnered with an engineering firm to complete a feasibility study and now complete daily water quality testing at the proposed site. We advocate for pedestrian and bicyclist underpasses at cross-river bridges to make it safer to use the pathways along the river. We partnered with Revels to start RiverSing in 2004, a community music event at the Weeks Bridge that celebrates the autumnal equinox. We illuminated river bridges, first as temporary efforts, then advocating for their permanent illumination. With MIT Press, we co-published Inventing the Charles River, authored by Karl Haglund. We have hosted over 100 TV shows about the parklands. We advocate for the parklands for its users when development projects are proposed, ensuring developers contribute appropriately to the parklands and state agency for river-abutting projects. We hosted Sunday Parklands games, yoga and meditation sessions in the parklands for 8 summers. We have published three editions of RiverStories in 2007, 2010 and We publish a monthly e-newsletter that reaches 15,000 readers with updates, action alerts, and parklands news. Our Future: The Conservancy is a strong and vibrant organization that plays a vital role in the ongoing stewardship of the urban Charles River parklands. As the Conservancy s founder, Renata, steps down as President we will honor her legacy by pushing forward with her vision of a world-class urban riverfront, enjoyed by all. The Conservancy will continue to pursue a permanent home on the riverfront for a swim park, expand our Conservancy Volunteers program to increase our cleanup and beautification efforts, advocate for the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists along the river, and act as a voice for this democratic common ground.
