Aim, Challenges and Main Results from the MEMORI Project Elin Dahlin NILU- Norwegian Institute for Air Research MEMORI Conference, Madrid, 4 th October 2013 Measurement, Effects Assessment and Mitigation of Pollutant Impact on Movable Cultural Assets. Innovative Research for Market Transfer. (G.A. no )
Content Aim of the MEMORI project The partners and end-users Objectives and methodology Challenges and main results The National Museum in Krakow, Poland
Are You aware? It is Something in the Air. Organic acids Particles/ dust SO 2 RH +T NO x Exposure of Cultural Heritage Objects Light/UV O 3 Effect on organic and inorganic materials
The Importance of Preventive How aware are you, of the environmental threats to your museum collection? Conservation Schwarzwälder Trachtenmuseum, Haslach,Germany
Impact Assessment of Environmental Conditions Objects in enclosures and storage areas might be affected by: Building materials Conservation treatments Climate change Infiltrated outdoor pollutants How to assess unsuitable environmental conditions in museums, historic buildings, archives and libraries? Wernher Collection, Rangers House, London, UK English Heritage
The MEMORI Technology offers MEMORI aims to: a Solution Provide the conservation market with innovative, non destructive early warning technology for easy assessment of environmental impact on indoor cultural heritage. Recommend tolerable pollution levels for organic acids on different types of materials. Suggest optimised active and passive control regimes for protective enclosures. Integrate MEMORI research results with existing preventive conservation strategy.
MEMORI Project Partners NILU - Norwegian Institute for Air Research, NO Fraunhofer Institute, DE Association Culture & Work, DE University of Pisa, IT Ghent University, BE A great team from 14 institutions and 10 countries University of Arts George Enescu, RO English Heritage, UK Birkbeck College University of London, UK SIT Groupo Empresarial S.L., ES Tate, UK Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Dublin City University, IE Architecture, Design and Conservation, DK Innovation NILU AS, NO University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, AT
Involvement of End-users from the Istanbul University, Turky The Picasso Museum, France The National Museum in Krakow, Poland Museum of Cultural History, Oslo, Norway Regional Museums Support Service Center Baden Württemberg, Germany Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum, Lithuania National Research Institute of Cultural Properties, Tokyo, Japan Start Preservation Equipment Ltd, UK The second end-user workshop at NILU-Norwegian Institute for Air Research
Recommendations from the end-user advisory group. The MEMORI- technology should be: An easy to handle tool for a reasonable price, which delivers quick and easy to interpret results. MEMORI dosimeter tested at the Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum, Vilnius, Lithuania.
MEMORI Objectives Improve Measurement Technology To integrate two dosimeter technologies from previous EU projects into the MEMORI dosimeter. Developement of the MEMORI Dosimeter reader. To produce a PC software and an interactive web page for the users. To implement a market and business plan. Effect Assessment To assess the damage impact of organic acids on cultural heritage objects dose response. Mitigation To suggest optimised active and passive control regimes for protective enclosures. To facilitate the use of protective enclosures to save energy and mitigate climate change. To integrate results with existing preventive conservation strategy.
MEMORI Project Methodologyhow did we work? Literature review End-user consultation Engineering work, building an instrument Software and webpage development Laboratory experiments Field tests and calibrations Analytical work Market surveys Dissemination of results
EWO and GSD technology Challenge NILU EWO Exposure at location for 3 months FRAUNHOFER GSD National Museum for Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo, Norway Lightabs. 340 nm Analysed with UV spectrophotometer in the laboratory. 12 Effect (nm) Before exposure Efter exposure 3 µm = 3000 nm Analysed with IR spectrophotometer in the laboratory
Assembling MEMORI technology A time consuming work
Calibration of the Dosimeters Response against the Environment Laboratory exposure of the dosimeters to controlled doses of pollutants. Indoor field exposures with simultaneous measurement of climate parameters and pollutants. Dose-response functions for the environmental effect, from statistical evaluation of indoor field data obtained. Fine Art Museum of Valencia, Spain
Effects Assessment on Organic Materials Preparation of Samples Exposure Analysis MALDI-TOF Varnish Pigments Leather /parchment Paper Textile Climate Chamber Accelerated ageing 15
Mitigation Methods Studies has been performed to optimise the designs and regimes for control of pollution in different enclosures: Evaluation of which absorbing materials that give the best effect, i.e. the highest absorbing capacity at the lowest cost. Results from these studies provided practical recommendations about; - how to reduce the presence of contaminants inside enclosures. Charcoal granulate installed into a showcase.
Improved Preventive Conservation Strategies Developing tolerable acceptance levels for effect of organic acids on different materials. A decision support model identifying risk of damage to materials has been developed. Chesters Roman Museum, UK
Marketing Survey and Dissemination of Results How many museums, libraries, and other cultural heritage institutions present here today, do monitor air pollution in their collections? If you dont, you are not alone In a European survey made within MEMORI 57% replied they did not monitor pollutants due to lack of knowledge and experience. May be you will start after this conference? AR&PA Fair in Valladolid, Spain
It is still a long way to go,. MEMORI will make the road shorter! The MEMORI product and services are today scientific prototypes, being tested in European well known museums and will hopefully be on the market within 15 months. The Museum of Cultural History, Oslo, Norway
Acknowledgements The MEMORI project is funded by: The European Commission as part of the 7 th FP The projects partners The sub-contractors The end-user advisory group The EU scientific officers: Michel Chapuis and Giulio Pattanaro
Thank you for your attention! Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum, Vilnius, Lithuania.
