3 The undulating landscape of Žemaitija National Park was molded years ago by ice sheets and receding glaciers. Typical features are rounded hills, moraine ridges around Plateliai Lake, and a great number of deeper or shallower lakes, bogs and meandering streams. The highest point is 191,8 m above sea level. The lowest point is about 50 m depression in the lake of Plateliai.

15 LIFESCAPE The European Landscape Convention - also known as the Florence Convention - promotes the protection, management and planning of European landscapes and organizes European co-operation on landscape issues. The convention was adopted on 20 October 2000 in Florence (Italy) and came into force on 1 March countries have signed ratifications of The European Landscape Convention
16 LIFESCAPE Goal of the LIFEscape project is to speed up the implementation of the Landscape Convention, by intensive transnational and - regional professional exchange, awareness raising campaign and stakeholder participation. Innovative solutions for participative landscape/spatial planning processes will be worked out and tested in pilot areas. They can be applied in the whole South Baltic region and beyond.

22 LIFESCAPE PROJECT IN ŽEMAITIJA NATIONAL PARK What has been done until now: Dissemination of information about the LIFEscape project: EUROPARC Nordic-Baltic Section member meeting&seminar "Protected areas as part of green infrastructure" in Estonia on March 6-8 for local people in Plateliai (Žemaitija NP) during the event of Earth Day on 21 of March Articles about the project in the local newspaper and in the website of Žemaitija NP. Information booklet about landscape of Žemaitija NP and other values is under preparation.
