2 Fuegosat Consolidation The Fuegosat consolidation phase was approved as part of the Earth Watch Programme by the ESA Council at Ministerial level in 2001 The Fuegosat consolidation members are: Spain, Italy, France & Germany Upon approval, a two step plan was proposed which comprised: Step 1 Mission Architecture Establishment Step 2 IR Element Definition within GMES IR instrument definition and service provision IR instrument study = DEVA Definition & Experimental Validation Activity 2

3 The DEVA Study The Definition & Experimental Validation Activities (DEVA) Study was completed up to PCR (2006). The PCR resulted in the definition of a push broom concept comprising - x3 cameras (Vis, MIR & TIR) - GSD = 160 m and a swath of 100 km. - Pointing mirror for rapid access to sites of interest within a 2000 km accessible swath. - TIR based on a micro-bolometer concept - MIR passively cooled. 3

4 Reorientation The Reorientation of Phase 2 of the Definition & Experimental Validation Activities (DEVA) Study is now called : GMES IR Sensor System Definition and Development Study It comprises three parts: - Part 1 : Infrared Sensor Options - Part 2 : Infrared Sensor Definition - Part 3 : Infrared Sensor System Development The RFQ was sent to industry by ESA during the summer and their proposal is expected this month (October 2008). The prime contractor is Galileo Avionica 4

8 Data User Element (DUE) Encourages the establishment of a long-term relationship between user communities and Earth Observation. Objectives: To provide an environment to develop user communities for both institutional and commercial applications; To support European companies to develop & demonstrate information products derived from current and future ESA missions; To support industry by establishing useful and cost effective services 8

9 DESIRE Activities DESIRE Study This is a study of Dual-use European Security IR Element (DESIRE). The activity will include: - Analysis of the relevant application activities - Analysis of related observables & identification of conflicting needs - Identification & analysis of other European developments in the IR domain (to avoid duplications). - Preliminary derivation of prospective user and mission requirements 9

10 DESIRE Activities DESIREX Airborne Campaign This is a study of Dual-use European Security IR Experiment (DESIREX) The campaign combines the collection of quality and coordinate airborne hyper-spectral, space-borne and in-situ measurements to generate a representative dataset (both spectrally, geometrically & radiometrically) to address specific needs of the reorientation of the FUEGOSAT mission definition. - Particularly the observational reqs. for Urban Heat Islands (UHI) & Urban Thermography (UT) monitoring 10

11 User Reqs Consolidation Review The user requirements for all the identified groups need to be carefully analysed and categorised. DUE Workshops DESIRE Workshop Some user groups may well be served by existing data and others will require new in-orbit capabilities. Therefore, optimisation and prioritisation of the reqs will be required. The activities will culminate with a user requirement workshop to consolidate priorities and mission requirements in view of future activities. User Requirements Consolidation Review The results of this consolidation exercise shall be fed into the Infrared Sensor Options Review (End of Part 1). IR Sensor Options Review 11

16 Part 1 Sensor Options Activities Use DEVA results as a starting point. Review existing infrared analysis. Establish the limits of what is possible given present day and future infrared sensors Derive infrared options on/near these boundaries Part 1 shall end with a Sensor Options Review There will be other activities that shall run in parallel to this study. These activities are: - DESIRE workshop - Data User Element (DUE) workshops These outputs shall be consolidated The consolidated results shall be fed into the Sensor Options Review (at the end of Part 1) 16
