2 CHAIRMAN INTRODUCTORY WORD Professor Ešref Gačanin, PhD Association of Consulting Engineers BiH Dear Colleagues, Attendees, Participants and Friends, On behalf of the Organising Committee, it is my great pleasure and honour to extend a warm welcome to the 1st Urban Planning and Regional Development Conference to be held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in October Started as a vision of three established and respected institutions: Association of Consulting Engineers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, IPSA Institute Sarajevo and Association of Architects in Bosnia and Herzegovina, this important and international event will serve as an innovative platform to enable exchange of knowledge and ideas between participants, stakeholders and leading experts in the region and abroad, in the field of spatial and urban planning and related disciplines. In the region with declining population numbers, it is still cities that attract people, mainly because of the higher quality of life. When asked to describe this expected rise in life quality, people most commonly use words mobility and accessibility. Previous puts priority task to planners and policy makers to create an urban development model that will enable existing and new urban developments to be mutually linked and accessible, and to upgrade the potential for serving the mobility needs generated by means of passenger transport. During two interesting days, in vibrant and diverse city of Sarajevo, we will discuss about New Approach in Urban Infrastructure Planning Strategies in exciting discussions covered by international lecturers. Also, interested participants will have the opportunity to display their own papers/posters on the above mentioned theme of the Conference, which will bring great and interesting talks onto the table. Young colleagues from the universities will take part in organized workshops, whose results and solutions on contemporary problems within the City, will be displayed during official program of the Conference. We take great pride in bringing together participants of different international, educational and professional background. The international and scientific program committee as the local organising committee hope to make this Conference an exciting and memorable event. With your help and commitment to our goal, we can make this effort successful and long-lasting. Having this in mind, we can easily already acknowledge the importance of the 1st Urban Planning and Regional Development Conference, for its results can change the way we think, perceive and experience urban infrastructure possibilities and power. 5 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS 1st Conference on Urban Planning and Regional Development new approach in urban infrastructure planning strategies Professor Oriol Nel Lo Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Assistant Professor Andrew Karwonen KUNGLIGA TEKNISKA högskolan (KTH) Oriol Nel Lo is a geographer specialising in urban studies and planning, presently Professor of Urban Geography at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He has served as well as Secretary for Spatial Planning of the Government of Catalonia ( ). Notable among his recent works are Land Use Planning: The Experience of Barcelona and Catalonia, Valencia, Tirant Io Blanch, 2012, Cities in Movement. Social Crisis and Citizen Response, Madrid, Díaz & Pons, 2015, Cities in the 21st Century, New York, Routledge., 2016 (with Renata Mele): an overview of the urbanization process in contemporary societies. Andrew Karvonen is Assistant Professor and Director of Doctoral Studies in the Division of Urban and Regional Studies at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He conducts research on the politics and practice of sustainable urban development with a particular focus on the cultural and social dimensions of urban technologies. He has completed research projects on water infrastructure, low-carbon housing, and urban experiments. He is lead editor of the Routledge compendium Inside Smart Cities: Place, Politics and Urban Innovation. Associate Professor Ismir Mulalić DTU and Kraks Fond Marko Peterlin Inštitut za Politike Prostora Ismir Mulalić is Associate Professor at the Technical University of Denmark and Senior Fellow at Kraks Fond Institute for Urban Economic Research. His research areas are applied microeconomics and applied micro econometrics, in particular urban economics and transportation economics. Recent research topics include the residence choice decision (residential sorting), gentrification, commuting, transport infrastructure investments, consumer choice behavior for durables, car use (rebound effect) and parking policy. Marko Peterlin is a co-founder and a director at IPoP Institute for Spatial Policies. His work focuses on urban development policies with particular focus on sustainable mobility, participation and governance. In 2008 he led the drafting of documents for the Slovenian EU Presidency in the fields of territorial cohesion and urban development policies. Since 2009 he takes part in the URBACT programme. He contributed to a number of studies for the EU Commission and ESPON programme.
