The site accommodated some 12,000 spectators in the temporary stands Awards RIBA Awards (East) - Spirit of Ingenuity Award The centre features a dual-channel facility that greatly reduces energy usage. The Olympic Channel will host competitions for experienced canoeists, whilst the Legacy Channel can be used for athlete training, and as a canoeing venue for visitors of all abilities. The Legacy Channel Opened in spring 2011, it was the first new sporting complex to be completed and the only London 2012 venue to be opened to the public ahead of the Games. uses 80% less power than the Olympic Channel, which means the centre can be run much more efficiently after the Games. A self-contained lake with its own independent pumping stations was also featured in the design. It is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. This solution considered the collection of rainfall, minimising evaporation and managing the water level drop when the courses are switched on. The new facility building, which houses a reception, changing rooms, spectator viewing and equipment storage, was designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.

A top quality tank has been delivered for muscle specific conditioning, technique training and off season rowing. Minimising the turbulence of the water flow and generation of standing waves was critical, so the experience for the athlete was as similar to being on the river as possible and to minimise pumping energy and maximise the water speed. Moving large volumes of water at a high velocity (9800 l/s, 3.2 m/s), for the purpose of athlete training, in the conditioned space of an indoor pool required detailed CFD analysis of the flow conditions. A new boat house and a boat launch deck to the River Wear will also be constructed as part of the development scheme. As the site was prone to flooding, the boat house design incorporated flood resilient measures. In addition, slope stability analysis and detailed design mitigated environmental concerns such as flooding and pollution.

Cundall were responsible for the design of new facility including the installation of this specialist equipment. This included designing the building structure to accommodate the Flowrider, the pool water filtration system and pool hall ventilation to deal with the additional loads generated by the Flowrider.
