3 What Is Sustainability? We hold sustainability to be connected to all aspects of life, and therefore planning. Environmental sustainability is not a set of issues that stand alone. As in nature these issues are interwoven and interdependent across our study group and into other areas of Davidson s comprehensive plan and study groups. Environmental sustainability is also a broad topic; many aspects should be practiced in tandem. For example, energy efficiency has a direct correlation to air quality and water conservation though each of these is an environmental issue in its own right and should be fully addressed. Recommendations that follow must be recognized as interwoven and interdependent throughout the comprehensive plan. As such, they cannot be solely described in any detached, distinct section of the plan. Sustainable development is a pattern of resource use that meets human needs while preserving the environment so these needs can be met in the present and in the indefinite future. Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development ties together concern for the carrying capacity of natural systems with the social challenges facing humanity. It is an economy in equilibrium with basic ecological support systems.

8 Sustainability Kincaid Trail (South Prong Greenway) The Southeast Greenway contributes to sustainability in the following areas: Encourages non-vehicular methods of transportation Promotes a healthy lifestyle The Greenway was built with a relatively modest investment by the Town of Davidson
9 Sustainability Green Development Encouraging green developments and buildings supports sustainability by: Increasing land use density, thus reducing sprawl and supporting transit if located in urban centers LEED and other green-building programs encourage developments in pedestrian-friendly, infill neighborhoods Well built homes provide a more efficient utilization of resources Green developments and buildings do not require a financial investment by the Town. They are very practical.
10 Sustainability Goals and Recommendations Our overarching goal is that Town elected officials and staff begin to look at their decisions through a prism of sustainability: Developments Capital investments Buildings and fleets Energy plans Transit Community education Watershed protection A Sustainable Future If sustainability is one of the key principles of Davidson, decisions are more likely to pass through that prism
11 Sustainability Goals and Recommendations Require that all new developments and buildings be ENERGY STAR certified Develop and implement an energy plan for the Town of Davidson Adopt policies to preserve and replant a diverse, native tree canopy Appoint members to the Natural Assets and Tree Advisory Board Hire or certify staff arborist Using the 2008 Natural Assets Inventory, redefine open space to encourage preservation of the most critical types of open space Promote the acquisition of public open space Provide incentives for the preservation of open space for local food production Require that all new developments and buildings have a green certification Support home weatherization programs Use only native, drought-tolerant species in all Town landscaping
12 Sustainability Goals and Recommendations Require a green checklist as part of the plan approval process Incorporate community gardens into park requirements Support the creation of programs that promote access of lower-income residents to local foods and food-related economic opportunities Support urban food production Promote local markets for locally and regionally produced foods
