SLLP Project Briefs Name of Project Photograph (key image) Telling the Stories of the Landscape Sponsoring partner SLLP Community Engagement Officer working with Storying Sheffield and Sheffield University Dept. of English Literature 150 Word summary Telling the Stories of the Landscape will bringing to life 3 signature stories of Sheffield Lakeland set context of the changes and challenges being experienced by 21 st century Sheffield. The project will be led by Professor Brendan Stone of Storying Sheffield. The outputs will be a combination of video, oral history, podcast, creative writing, exhibitions, presentations and discussions. a) A Disappearing Landscape an intergenerational oral history project with farmers and other land based workers, identifying changes in their lifetimes to be produced as a podcast which can support wider interpretation as well as an oral history archive. b) The Building of Sheffield Lakeland the story of the building of the reservoirs, outputs will include family history research, curation of archive images and will culminate in a touring exhibition. c) Flood! A documentary style film which will provide a retrospective on the 1864 and 2007 flood events, using historic pictures, reporting, video footage and vox pops of memories of 25 th June 2007, interwoven with information about the latest research in natural flood management. d) Celebrating HLF - Heritage Lottery Funded Landscape projects are unique in that they work across a landscape and a partnership, engaging communities in specific projects that

link together. As the remit is at a landscape level the partnership has an opportunity to not just promote and celebrate the work of the Heritage Lottery Fund as it pertains to the Landscape Conservation Action Plan. During the delivery phase of our LCAP we intend to review all of the projects the Heritage Lottery has funded either in the area itself or involving its community elsewhere. We will create a webpage celebrating what the Heritage Lottery Fund has helped us all achieve since it was initiated in Full project description Etc. Telling the Stories of the Landscape was initially given a small budget of just However, a story led approach is a useful tool to underpin interpretive themes across all the activities of Partnership. The budgets for story based projects described below are therefore drawn from a number of different projects within the programme. This is noted below for each one. Telling the Stories of the Landscape will bringing to life 3 signature stories of Sheffield Lakeland set context of the changes and challenges being experienced by 21 st century Sheffield. The project will be led by Professor Brendan Stone of the School of English at Sheffield University / Storying Sheffield Professor Stone s track record in working with Sheffield communities, his links with media production companies and his own student resource will enable Telling the Stories to be ambitious in its proposed outcomes despite modest budgets for the projects suggested. Story 1: A Disappearing Landscape An intergenerational oral history project with farmers and other land based workers, identifying changes in their lifetimes to be produced as a podcast, which can support wider interpretation as well as an oral history archive. This story will be the focus during Year 1 of delivery, capturing a way of life that is disappearing before our eyes - the stories of the stewards of the land - farmers, game keepers, rangers, land agents, reservoir staff, ramblers, large private landowners - looking back at what was, the changes they have witnessed in their lifetimes and how they feel about the changes to come. This project idea has been inspired by the farm visits and other stakeholder meetings undertaken during the development year of the partnership and the recognition as a result of these that the partnership area is entering a generational tipping point as the last farmers who remember working the land pre-mechanisation pass on.

Activity plan: Capturing reminiscences in the style of Radio 4 s The Listening Project, where the listener is a fly on the Wall whilst a conversation unfolds. Structured oral history with young people as the interviewers NFU Young Farmers, students from Sheffield University and Sheffield College. Identifying and mapping "roaming range" as the tool to lead the interview - how far did interviewees roam from home, compared to the interviewers. Follow- up work - collating of stories, different perspectives on land and access and mapping roaming radius outputs. Analysis of differences, if any, between Young Farmer interviewers and student interviewers. Final outputs will include a permanent archive (held at Weston Park Museum and / or Yorkshire Museum of Farm and / or NFU national archives tbc). The funding for this story is derived from: Telling the Stories 2000 Digital Landscape 5000 However the expenditure is shown in the Telling the Stories spreadsheet. Story 2: The Building of Sheffield Lakeland (The Dambuilders) The story of the building of the reservoirs, outputs will include family history research, curation of archive images and will culminate in a touring exhibition. This story is programmed for year 2 of the delivery period. The story will be a follow-on opportunity for a city based new arrival group which has been involved in the Stepping Out project to work with community groups based in Stocksbridge (via Stocksbridge Community Forum and Stocksbridge and District History Society). The 14 reservoirs in Sheffield Lakeland are built between 1830 and Exploring their construction is an opportunity to take the long view of a community in transition - a settled community being dislocated by the flooding of the valleys, a migrant community arriving to provide the labour to build the dams. Where did the people who built the reservoirs come from (Canal projects, Cornwall, Ireland, Scotland?). Through a combination of archive research and storying technique Story 2 will explore how these communities respond to each other and to the transformational change in the landscape. Family history research will explore the extent to which local communities can trace their arrival in Sheffield to the building of the reservoirs and resonances within communities today. This story is funded through: The Community Archaeology Hidden Histories strand, project Art in the Landscape 4000

NB the proportion of expenditure being provided by the Community Archaeology project is shown in the Hidden Histories spreadsheet, however the expenditure drawn from the Art in the Landscape project appears in the Telling the Stories spreadsheet. This is because these projects will be managed by different officers in delivery. Activity plan Researching archive newspaper reports, photographs, family history workshops, creative writing workshops, visits to locations of "Tin Towns" and surviving examples, identifying new homes that were built to house communities / businesses displaced as a result of the building of the reservoirs Outputs - exhibition of work / images / readings of creative writing Workshops in which experiences are shared over a meal (e.g. Irish dancing Outcomes - Different communities sharing stories, working together, reduction in barriers between communities, increased trust and understanding of what it is like to be a new arrival / economic migrant enhanced community cohesion. Story 3: Flood! Flood! A documentary style film which will provide a retrospective on the 1864 and 2007 flood events, using historic pictures, reporting, archive video footage and vox pops of memories of 25 th June 2007, interwoven with information about the latest research in natural flood management. There has already been a lot of work done on 1864 Flood e.g. and w.mick-armitage.staff.shef.ac.uk/sheffield/flood.html, however the story of this disaster is not widely known outside of Sheffield. There is also a great deal of footage available of the 2007 flood and most people have clear memories of where they were and what they saw on that day. Natural flood management is a key component of the Working with Water project within the SLLP partnership. This is an opportunity to use people s understanding of and experiences of historic flood events as a platform to showcase the opportunities being presented by natural flood management techniques. Activity plan Working with local community groups, interested individuals and stakeholders involved in the management of water in Sheffield Lakeland, to record local people recounting their memories of the 2007 flood: where they were, what they were doing, how the flood made them feel on the day and about the rivers long term. (Flood victims often talk about a long term relationship of suspicion with their local stream after a flood incident). Collating archive images, newspaper articles and other first person accounts of the flood of 1864, including stories of the

flood event and disaster management, public inquiry which followed. Visits and volunteering opportunities in natural flood management projects in the headwaters of the rivers. Visits to other communities repeatedly affected by flood where more work has been done with natural flood management e.g. Todmorden to share experiences, hopes and fears. Talks and presentations (locally and at relevant conferences). Outputs The Flood story will underpin the interpretation of a waymarked flood commemoration heritage trail from Dale Dike reservoir to Malin Bridge. A documentary style film that leads the viewer through a long view of historic events and shared experiences into a discussion of flood risks. The aim is to achieve a broadcast quality film, which can be used for talks and presentations in a wide range of settings - from schools, to Bradfield Flickfest to the Showroom Cinema and which could also be used as part of discussions around flood management. There would be an opportunity to enter the film of this type in the Global Sustainability Film Awards (Eco-BAFTAs). The budget for this project is derived from: Telling Local Stories 10,000 Digital Landscape 4000 Arts in the Landscape 7000 Addition funding which will deliver physical interpretation along the flood heritage trail will come from Gateways and Access to the Countryside / A Landscape for Everyone to Enjoy strands. Additional funding which will enable volunteers to participate in natural flood management projects will come from the Volunteering and / or Working with Water strands. Story 4. Celebrating the Heritage Lottery in the Sheffield Lakeland A web based slide show that identifies and captures key images of the wide range of Heritage Lottery Funded projects which have impacted the area, from Stone to Steel and Dungworth and Bradfield WW1 project to the rebuilding of Cutgate Path and the Peak District wide Sky dancer project. Outputs A place where the previous, combined contributions of the lottery can be viewed. A short report placing the SLLP programme within the context of the Heritage Lottery. The budget for this project is derived fully from this programme and will be used to engage a local research consultant and designer. Digital landscape researcher 6,000 (no VAT) Designer 2,000 (no VAT)
