2 Welcome to the GREEN SURGE Conference in Malmö! Foto: Jens Ohlsson We find this city to be an extra fitting venue for such a global conference as it reflects the demographics of Malmö well. In our city of about 330,000 inhabitants we have over 177 nationalities represented and more than 140 different languages spoken. I am proud that Malmö is host to this vital conference. Green infrastructure is at the core of all of our urban planning. Here in Malmö, we truly believe that a city which does not take environmental as well as social responsibility today will not be successful tomorrow. This conference is a great opportunity both for sharing experiences as well as for learning from each other. We look forward to two days of interesting sessions and discussions, based on the research conducted over the past four years on this topic. Once again, welcome to Malmö and the GREEN SURGE Conference! Andreas Schönström Deputy Mayor of Malmö Greetings from the GREEN SURGE Consortiom It is a great pleasure to welcome you to our final conference, kindly hosted by Malmö City. This conference marks the end of a 4-year project including 23 partners from 11 countries. During this conference, you will hopefully be inspired by and learn from peers in both research and practice of urban green infrastructure (UGI) projects. During the many parallel sessions as well as the keynote talks and plenary discussions, we will exchange knowledge about what urban green infrastructure means to cities and citizens, and how planners, researchers and politicians work with green infrastructure initiatives in urban contexts. In order to save paper, detailed information is available only online at Online you can find descriptions of the different sessions, speakers info etc. After the conference, you will also be able to find videos and other documentation from the event on our website. Remember to follow and share the conference online, using the #greensurgemalmo Wishing you a great conference! Greetings from the entire GREEN SURGE consortium The GREEN SURGE project is funded by the European Commission Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). 2 CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

7 THURSDAY MORNING 21 SEPTEMBER :00 GATHERING & COFFEE 09:00 Introduction to technical visits - Carolina Aud. Green Infrastructure Planning in Malmö by Tim Delshammar, Landscape Architect, Street and Parks Department, Malmö Excursions 1-4 (possibility to choose one of the four): Technical visit #1 The Western Harbour projects // Västra Hamnen Since the sustainable building exhibition in 2001, the district has expanded and new layers of innovative planning and construction have been added. One challenge has been to build a compact yet green district. Different tools have been used to incorporate biodiversity and ecosystem services in the built environment. The Ohoj and Koggen housing projects and the Varvsparken greenspace are examples of how to deal with such issues. Photo: Lars Bendroth Technical visit #2 The Limestone Quarry // Kalkbrottet Since it was abandoned, the former limestone quarry, covering about 800,000 m², has turned out to be the main hotspot for biodiversity in Malmö. As home to several rare and endangered species, it s a must for ecologists. Others can enjoy the stunning scenery and the fascinating remains from the industrial era. The park has a biotope design inspired by the lime brownfields in the area. Photo: Lars Bendroth CONFERENCE PROGRAMME 7
8 21 SEPTEMBER 2017 Technical visit #3 People s Park // Folkets Park Folkets Park was founded by the local labour movement as a place for political meetings, but also as a theme park for the working class. Now, run by the Street and Parks Department, the park is a cultural heritage site and a venue for recreation, leisure, culture and meetings between different groups of society. The park is managed with a focus on social inclusion. OBS: this visit is done walking Photo: Torbjörn Larsson Technical visit #4 Augustenborg Greenhouse and Augustenborg District // Augustenborg Since 2001, the Augustenborg district has been a showcase for the sustainable refurnishment of existing areas. Augustenborg has proved to be resilient to cloudbursts because of stormwater facilities. Photo: Tim Delshammer The Green Roof Institute was part of the refurnishment of the entire district. Originally, it was constructed to handle stormwater runoff, but since 2001 has been developed into an exhibition of green roofs, as well as a visitor centre for the eco-city Augustenborg. Field trips arranged by The Street and Parks Department, Malmö 12:00 LUNCH 8 CONFERENCE PROGRAMME
