The Eiffel Tower Paris, France The Eiffel Tower, nicknamed "The Iron Lady" is the most famous city landmark in Paris, France. It was designed by a man named Gustave Eiffel. Construction of the Eiffel Tower began on January 28, 1887, and was eventually completed on March 31, It took 2 years, 2 months, and 5 days for the 300 workers involved to complete the task. The Eiffel Tower was designed to be the entrance way to the 1889 World's Fair and to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. It was not intended to be a permanent structure. It was to be destroyed after 20 years. Many people did not like the design of the Eiffel Tower. They thought it would be an eyesore, but once it was built, many people grew to love the tower. The structure was saved from destruction and is now used mostly for TV and radio transmission, and also for cellular communication, other than being a popular tourist destination.

Stonehenge Wiltshire, England Stonehenge is one of the most ancient and mysterious landmarks in the world. It is located on the Salisbury Plain in the county of Wiltshire, England. Archaeologists believe the monument was built between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago, during the Stone Age, and was either a burial ground or used as a calendar. There is no solid evidence of who the builders where or the reason as to why it was built. Stonehenge consists of enormous prehistoric stones laid out in circles. Today, there are 79 major stones, and some of them are 18 feet high and weigh up to 40 tons. It has been estimated that building the huge monument would have taken over 30 million hours of labor. Researchers agree that many of the stones were dragged up to 200 miles to the site. It is not known exactly how the larger stones were moved. They may have been sailed up a river on wooden boats, or pulled on primitive sledges made from tree trunks.

Stonehenge The builders of Stonehenge were very exact in their building techniques. The circle of stones is in line with the midsummer sunrise, the midwinter sunset, and the movements of the moon. Stonehenge is not a unique stone structure in Britain. It is one of 900 stone circles located in the country. However, Stonehenge is the largest and most well-known. Almost a million people visit Stonehenge each year, which is now a World Heritage site.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge Fact Cards Throughout history people have came up with different theories as to who constructed Stonehenge. These ideas from the magician Merlin, through to Celtic Druids and local shepherds and even alien visitors. Two types of stones were used for the construction of Stonehenge; blue stones weighing nearly four tons and sarsen stone weighing twenty-five tons. Many of the stones from Stonehenge have now fallen or been taken by medieval and early modern builders and used to make bridges and dams.

Stonehenge Fact Cards At the center of Stonehenge, there is a single tall stone, called the Heel Stone. At sunrise on midsummer s day (the solstice), the sun shines directly along the avenue to the Heel Stone of Stonehenge. In 1986, Stonehenge became a World Heritage Site of UNESCO which is protected as an ancient monument.

Stonehenge Fact Cards It s likely that thousands of people would have been needed to work on the construction of Stonehenge over the years and that it would have taken over a million man hours of labor to complete. Recent evidence has shown that Stonehenge has served as a burial ground from its beginning. Research shows that there are people buried there dating all the way back to 3000 BC. The reason Stonehenge is famous is because of the many mysterious things like how the stones got there, who made the monument, and because it is set up in a very interesting way.

The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx Giza, Egypt Of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, the Pyramids at Giza are the only ones remaining. The Great Sphinx sits nearby, a feline character carved from a single block of stone. It is not fully known how ancient Egyptians, who built this pyramid around the 26th century B.C., manage to transport, raise, and position some 2.3 million limestone blocks, each weighing at least 5,500 pounds. Archaeologists believe that approximately 100,000 laborers used wooden sleds, papyrus ropes, and levers to drag the stones up ramps and into place. The pyramids found in Giza are believed to have been constructed over a period of eighty years. Today there are more than 93 Pyramids in Egypt; the most famous ones are those at Giza. The pyramids were built as tombs for Kings (and Queens) in ancient Egyptian times. There are three main pyramids that make up the Pyramids of Giza. These are named Khufu (also known as the Great Pyramid), Khafre, and Menkaure, each of them being a tomb dedicated to a different king of Egypt. The Great Pyramid is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza. The pyramid, which stands 481 feet high, remained the tallest man-made structure in the world for more than 3500 years.

The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx The Great Sphinx is the largest single sculpted statue in the world, carved directly from the rock of the plateau of Giza. The statue was carved out of a single ridge of limestone. The Great Sphinx is a huge sculpture of a lion with a woman s head believed to have been carved around 2,500 BC. It is 187 feet long, and 70 feet high. The Great Sphinx was used to symbolize the strength of the Pharaoh. The Great Sphinx is in an area of Egypt that is mostly desert. It is completely filled with sand and when the wind blows, the sand moves around. It is constantly filling in the area around the sphinx. Today, there are people who constantly take care of the sphinx area and sweep out the excess sand.

The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx

Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx Fact Cards A Sphinx is a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head of a person. In Ancient Egypt a lot of times the head was that of a Pharaoh or a god. The Egyptians built sphinx statues to guard important areas such as tombs and temples. Efforts are being made to preserve the Great Sphinx, but it continues to erode over time.

Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx Fact Cards The mortar used when building the Pyramids of Giza is of an unknown origin (no explanation given). It has been analyzed and its chemical composition is known but it can t be reproduced. It is stronger than the stone and still holding up today. The Giza pyramids have elaborate tunnel systems inside containing gold and other objects Egyptians thought would be useful in the afterlife. The Great Pyramid is the only one in Egypt known to have passages inside that go up and go down. If you wanted to visit the king s chamber you would have to walk down, all the way, bent over.

Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx Fact Cards The Great Pyramid once had a swivel door at the entrance. It weighed about 20 tons and could easily be pushed open from the inside. On the outside it was very hard to find because it fit perfectly. If we tried to build an exact replica of the Great Pyramid it would not be possible. We do not have the precise technology that the ancient Egyptians had that was necessary to build this pyramid. The Pyramids of Giza were built as a tomb designed to protect the king's body and keep grave robbers from plundering the supplies the king would need in the next world.
