3 4-1 An Urban Orchard at Downsview Park 1-35 Carl Hall Road Downsview Park s Orchard and Pavilion project is part of the exciting redevelopment at Parc Downsview Park, Canada s first national urban park. The one-hectare, 400-tree urban orchard, which was designed by MMM Group Limited and opened in July 2012, provides a gateway to the park and a model for sustainable food systems in urban communities. The design developed and successfully implemented an approach that balanced the art and science of productive orchards, formal considerations of perspective and scale, and the cultivation of a culture of community engagement. The project transformed a portion of the former air force base into a community destination and provides a model of integrated systems thinking for community engagement, horticultural excellence, and formal beauty in the emerging field of urban agriculture.

5 Olive Square Olive Square is an exemplary example of public place-making through a transparent public design process, creating a much needed open space amenity in a high-density 5575 Yonge Street neighbourhood where there once stood a vacant parking lot. The design process was all encompassing, involving the Ward Councillor and local residents who struck a formal design steering committee that drove the final design, even voting on the name of the new space Olive Square! Located within the designated North York Centre boundaries, this project was also formally presented to the newly inaugurated City of Toronto Design Review Panel as one of the first public open space designs to be formally submitted to the Panel. 4-2 [Insert Project Image 2] With valuable input from both the Design Review Panel and local residents, the design strikes a balance between the desire for an exceptional space and the limited capital budget available for its construction by using high-quality, local materials and focusing on creating a cherished green space that is fully accessible to the public. Classic and simple design strategies were employed: to extend the Yonge Street Streetscape into the square through finely detailed paving treatments; to create a classic open lawn on a raised mound to maximize exposure to sunlight; and to define a pedestrian scaled edge treatment through the use of densely planted perimeters that strategically frame urban vistas. An innovative bio-swale was designed and integrated into this square that captures all of the storm water runoff on the site and naturally filters it before entering the city s storm sewer infrastructure. This typically naturalized feature was designed to be a part of the space as an innovative urban design element.

7 4-3 Dundas St. West Parkettes Dundas St. West [Insert Project Image 2] GOAL: To provide a rhythm of special moments along the street, injecting trees and planting and comfortable custom furnishings for residents to pause and participate in the streetlife. Eight formerly neglected orphan spaces have been transformed into occupiable public spaces along Dundas Street West. The parkettes contribute to the street s customized look, new function and unique identity. Our kit of parts include trees, site-specific planter designs, custom Ipe wood benches, quality paving, a public art installation, sculptural bike racks, groundcover planting and permeable surfacing around existing trees. The parkettes were envisioned through a participatory design process involving City representatives from Economic Development, Transportation Public Realm, Transportation Technical Services, Urban Design as well as the BIA s streetscape committee. This project has become a motivator of change in the neighbourhood. Completed in 2011, the parkettes appear as though they have always been a part of the Dundas Street West community.

9 4-4 Montclair Parkette Montclair Ave. at Spadina Rd. Contributing to the beautification of the community, Montclair Parkette transforms an inaccessible open space into a welcoming gateway for the village. The natural stone retaining walls wrap around the site s mature deciduous trees while a stone paved walkway bisects the parkette providing a sense of place. Unlike the previous parkette, the new design allows all pedestrians to enjoy the physical remove from the street while maintaining an accessible connection via bisecting sidewalk. The winding path also helps pedestrians transition from high volume Spadina Rd towards a more subdued residential community. Pedestrians can sit on limestone retaining walls or custom corian benches surrounded by a variety of plants that contribute to the environment s tranquility. The retaining walls provide a strong sense of enclosure. LED lights are incorporated into limestone retaining walls enhancing the park s presence at night. An intensive use of vegetation and natural stone allow the parkette to take a strong gp presence within an urban context, to re-enforce the stability and maturity of the village within the city.
