RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Post-doctoral scientific assistant 10/ /2014 ETH Zurich, D-USYS, TdLab - Created and conducted two international workshops in order to initiate the research agenda for a new interdisciplinary environmental sciences program at the Singapore-ETH Zurich Centre (SEC) in Singapore, in a transdisciplinary process bringing together Singaporean government officials, researchers, and ETH professors. - Prepared Innovedum grant for creation of new teaching methods for Bachelor, Master-level students at ETH Zurich. - Carried out research regarding the function of boundary organizations, using the Future Cities Lab as a case study. PhD student 9/2008 8/2013 Yale FES Thesis topic: Phosphorus cycling and its role in urban sustainability - Created an index for identifying phosphorus vulnerability in urban areas. - Extensive field work and application of index in Singapore. - Used phosphorus flows in Singapore as a proxy for understanding the connections between foodenergy-waste systems and their impact on urban sustainability and resilience. Project manager 8/2010 4/2013 "Urban Metabolism Studies in the Jurong Lake District" Yale FES National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore - Designed and implemented 7 months of empirical household-level waste data collection for a team of 15 undergraduate and Masters students from NUS and Masters students from the Yale FES for the Sustainable High-Density Living Urban Metabolism (Industrial Ecology) Studies in the Jurong Lake District Project. - Lead scenario construction workshops on sustainable waste management and collaborative meetings with the strategic research division of the Urban Redevelopment Authority [URA] and the Housing Development Board [HDB] (both Singaporean government agencies). - Created greenhouse gas calculator for URA and HDB to facilitate land planning waste management decision-making in new development area. - Developed a network of Singaporean research groups (Nanyang Technical University, NUS Dept. of Architecture), non-profit groups (Ground-Up Initiative), and businesses for research collaboration and implementation. Research intern 6/2004 1/2005 International Water Management Institute (IWMI), India Carried out 6 months of soil sampling fieldwork and structured interviews with rice farmers for Bachelors honors thesis, "Soil salinity and the effects of wastewater irrigation on rice yields in periurban areas of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh". 2
3 POLICY RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Lead research associate 10/2006-8/2008 Stanford University, Program on Energy and Sustainable Development (PESD), USA, China Co-ordinated and lead research between teams in Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Guangdong Techno-economic Research and Development Center, and Stanford University, translation of academic reports from Chinese to English, acted as cultural and language liaison between the American and Chinese research teams.
