School of Architecture Dalhousie University M1 Public Architecture ARCH Instructors (TS) Labour is the genius that changes the forests into ships. All great results have been the results of anxious thoughts and care. Great undertakings can only be accomplished by study and work. A man need not know many books but he must know his trade and men. W.D. Lawrence, Maitland ship builder[1] Schooner Kingsport, NS
CALENDAR DESCRIPTION This comprehensive studio examines the role of public architecture in manifesting cultural values through the design of a civic institution. It also considers public architecture as an expression of material culture that mediates between the scales of artifact and landscape. ADDITIONAL COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will design an 15,000 sq. ft. building, the Fundy Maritime Museum, to be built on 4 potential sites; Windsor, Canning, Maitland or Newport Landing, Nova Scotia. (specific sites to be determined) Turner Shipyard Harvey, NB Design propositions must consider the town s context and advances in building technology. This will require innovative design thinking and resolutions at many scales. The course will emphasize program research and development. Students will discover the latent qualities and relationships within a given programme that can inform the conceptual design process at all scales. Students will then make definite programmatic decisions that will inform the detailed development of an urban strategy, and a building s structure, envelope, materials, and lighting. Additional public program will also be considered. Herreshof, RI This course is a comprehensive design studio. As such, comprehensive design covers theoretical and practical concerns, technological and programmatic demands, and formal and contextual expectations at various architectural scales, including the urban, the building, the room, and the detail. Description
LEARNING OBJECTIVES Research and design work will communicate existing conditions, systems, phenomena, constraints and opportunities as they pertain to the small nova scotia town. Students will: Develop sustainable/ ecological theories as that relate to our Natural landscapes and urban contexts. Gain knowledge and skill dealing with a complex multifunctional program. 8 CONTEXT: MINAS BASIN The Bay of Fundy, totals an area of about km 2 and as deep as 200 m, is a part of the Continental Shelf off eastern Canada and New England. The Bay of Fundy s marine ecosystem is a macro-tidally influenced, semi-enclosed coastal sea, surrounded by Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts as well as Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Our focus will be on the Minas Basin, a sub-basin of the Fundy Basin. The Bay of Fundy tides are the world s largest, ranging from low to high tide in some areas that can exceed 16 m, such as Minas Basin. The flow past Cape Split into Minas Basin is 40 times the St. Lawrence. The Minas Basin is an inlet of the Bay of Fundy located in Nova Scotia, Canada. The Minas Basin forms the eastern part of the Bay of Fundy which splits at Cape Chignecto and is delineated by the massive basalt headlands of Cape Split and Cape d Or. Several communities border the Minas Basin or the rivers that flow into it. They include Truro, Windsor, Parrsboro, Five Islands, Economy, Mainland, Newport Landing, Wolfville, and Kingsport. Maitland Canning Newport Landing Windsor SITES: BAY OF FUNDY Canning, Newport Landing, Windsor, Maitland Project Brief
The ebb and flow of the tides is felt here, like no other place on the earth. The bounty of the sea brought prosperity to the people, from ship building, to trade and the fishery, all timed around the rise and fall of the tide. [2] School of Architecture Dalhousie University SITES 1.Windsor Windsor is a town at the junction of the Avon and St. Croix rivers. The rivers empty into the Minas Basin, which allowed ships to sail from the Atlantic, up the Bay of Fundy and down into the middle province. The fertile headlands around these rivers made for ideal farming. Many Acadian settlers congregated to the area, erecting mills along the rivers to harness their power. Shipbuilding was also prominent, at its height, between 1840 and It flourished mainly in Windsor, Hantsport, Newport Landing and the Kempt Shore. In Windsor, Bennett Smith and Shubael Dimock dominated the shipbuilding industry. 2.Canning Canning was a prosperous community based primarily on agriculture and the ship-building industry. The harbour was busiest at harvest time, with many vessels exported farm produce such as apples and potatoes, and industrial products like coal and grindstones. During the s, the Canning harbour was highly noted for ship-building with the location of four ship-building industries in the town. 1. Town of Windsor, NS 2. Town of Canning, NS 3.Maitland Maitland is a tiny village located at the mouth of the Shubenacadie River in the upper reaches of the Bay of Fundy. Although a small village today, it was a bustling shipbuilding town during the latter half of the nineteenth century. The ships built in the village were some of the largest in Canada and once launched, the vessels, which were often owned by local shipbuilder, visited ports in Europe, South America and Asia. 4.Newport Landing Newport Landing, also known as Avondale, was a prominent shipbuilding town in the Minas Basin. The historical name was of the town Newport Landing. Key figures, Robert Fuller and John Davison, oversaw the Churchill yards in Hantsport and Moshers and Harvies had their own businesses in Newport Landing. Master builders such as John Caldwell and Roderick Rose worked in the near by Kempt Shore industry. 3. Town of Maitland, NS 4. Town of Newport Landing, NS Project Brief
PROGRAM: FUNDY MARITIME MUSEUM Students are to design a 15, 000 (net) sq. ft. Maritime Museum. The museum should reflect cultural values while embody the context of urban life. Designs must consider landscape, garden elements, the wharf, slipways and multipurpose boatyards. This complex will assume a 1.50 gross up factor for a total gross area of 22,500 sq. ft. The program will include: Exhibition Hall (3000 sq. ft.) Education Centre (4000 sq. ft.) Administration (500 sq. ft.) Collections/Storage (3000 sq. ft.) Gift Shop (1000 sq. ft.) Cafe (500 sq. ft.)
