PUBLIC REALM & PLACEMAKING We recognise the fundamental importance of striking the right balance between vehicular and pedestrian accessibility in our public places. Our public realm, street and highway designs are at the forefront of this approach. We aim to create environments that provide an identifiable sense of place, that are accessible and safe for all and seek to improve quality of life. Our expert teams are skilled in recognising and resolving conflicts between the creation of high quality spaces and the requirement for easy access and movement across them. With reference to guidance documents, such as Manual for Streets, we provide specialist advice and direction in settings ranging from public transport interchanges to town centre regenerations and the streetscape. Our public realm services include: detail design public transport interchange design and appraisal Manual for Streets based layouts accident remediation/road safety audits (RSA) pedestrian and cycling facility design traffic management studies vehicle tracking and swept path analysis on-site construction supervision

STREETSCAPE & DESIGN STANDARDS MANUAL FOR STREETS/MFS2 GUIDANCE In recent years, traditional rigid highway design standards have given way to more relaxed guidance with an emphasis on placemaking and the streetscape. In order to integrate these requirements with the practical and functional needs of a development, our experts undertake quality audits, safety audits, access design and development layout design in compliance with the latest guidance. Our application of these standards often unlocks development opportunities for sites which were previously considered to be constrained, enabling robust and sustainable public realm strategies and supporting planning applications. TOWN CENTRE REGENERATION VAUXHALL CROSS DISTRICT CENTRE On urban schemes our experts are engaged to ensure that transport demands from pedestrians, cars, cyclists, public transport and commercial vehicles are all accommodated within safe and capable layouts. At Vauxhall Cross, in the Vauxhall- Nine Elms-Battersea Opportunity Area, we advised Lambeth Council on a radical overhaul to enable better, safer and more sustainable pedestrian access in a high quality public realm. Alongside developing design principles that complement existing Opportunity Area policies, we assessed the impact on bus services and provided junction and network models to determine local impacts and encourage sustainable accessibility and regeneration. This included design work for converting the gyratory to a two-way system in order to address key place-making features of the project and reinforce the town centre strategy. PUBLIC INTERCHANGE CORBY RAILWAY STATION We were commissioned by the Homes & Communities Agency to manage the planning and delivery of a fully integrated transport system, including a new railway station, as part of the Corby Regeneration Framework Our work included the preparation of outline planning for two development sites and detailed proposals for the station infrastructure to provide a high quality gateway to Corby. The final scheme comprises a new railway station as part of a mixed use gateway development that includes a public transport interchange, car parking, cycle parking and high quality public open space. The new development is expected to create more than 1,200 new retail and office jobs, through improved connectivity and profile, and unlock 200m of further commercial investment in the area.

DEVELOPMENT INFRASTRUCTURE Effective infrastructure is a key enabler of economic and social progress. We have proven expertise in delivering a wide range of development infrastructure projects for both public and private sectors. Our expert services ensure collaborative success from inception stages through to detailed design, procurement and project management of any size of infrastructure project. We bring practical knowledge derived from long experience in a broad range of sectors, including commercial, leisure, retail and residential development. Our skills are widely used by our clients to unlock problematic developments and deliver sustainable solutions that maximise return on investment. We are acutely aware of capital costs of infrastructure and all strategies consider financial appraisals to provide robust and deliverable solutions. Our services include: construction management plans Section 104 drainage designs Section 278/38 and RCC highway designs key stakeholder engagements Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) on-site construction supervision

SUSTAINABLE DRAINAGE DESIGN FLOOD RISK AND WATER MANAGEMENT It is widely acknowledged that our climate is rapidly changing and careful water management solutions must be considered in developments. We have extensive expertise in undertaking flood risk assessments and drainage impact studies to unlock developments with challenging conditions. Our knowledge of the latest computer hydraulic modelling software allows investigation of site specific issues and formulation of effective mitigation strategies to aid planning applications and detailed designs. Our assessments typically include reviewing proposed development flows along with existing drainage infrastructure in order to appraise the viability of various drainage techniques such as SUDS or more traditional drainage methods. ROADS & DRAINAGE DEVELOPMENT RESIDENTIAL HIGHWAY DESIGN We have vast experience in the residential sector assisting clients from acquisition through to delivery. Our highway design services are used widely during the planning stages and on to construction and delivery. Design services range from simple vehicular crossings through to complicated junctions and dual carriageway designs to access major developments. On larger schemes we bring a significant contribution to the masterplan and provide highway engineering expertise to ensure that the plan retains its urban identity and can still be delivered on site. Our comprehensive design services range from preparation of Section 38/278 construction drawings, cut/ fill volumetric assessments, construction documentation and tender procurement through to site supervision. In a rapidly changing market, this suite of skills provides clients with a fully integrated residential network solution. DEVELOPMENT LAYOUT DESIGN HORNDEAN, HAMPSHIRE Our transport strategy for this development forms part of a masterplan to deliver 700 new homes and a range of community facilities in a vibrant and attractive extension to the village of Horndean. Following presentation of initial concepts to local stakeholders and a series of public consultation events we developed a contextually appropriate and coherent scheme to support our clients planning application. The masterplan aims to deliver a walkable neighbourhood that integrates landscaped pedestrian and cycle routes with the wider village network and improves accessibility to the surrounding countryside. Key features include shared Home Zone surfaces to reduce dominance of motor vehicles and a clearly articulated street hierarchy that will encourage more sustainable patterns of transport.

MAJOR HIGHWAYS & BRIDGE DESIGN Designing highways and bridges is driven by the need to connect people with places. Whether you re implementing upgrades or building a totally new road system, the design must bring benefits to the communities it serves. We work collaboratively across disciplines to design and deliver successful highway and bridge projects. Our teams include skilled project managers who are able to weave together the technical threads to ensure projects are approved and delivered within financial and programme constraints. We work with contractors to deliver design and build commissions and can provide Employer s Agent services direct to client organisations. Our design work on structures includes inspection, assessment and feasibility studies to outline and detailed design. Whether the project is a minor improvement to an existing highway or a major new-build construction, we can bring together the right people in open dialogue to ensure successful delivery. Our range of capabilities includes: feasibility and project scoping including traffic and environmental surveys, accident investigation/analysis, multimodal studies and traffic and economic modelling. community and stakeholder consultation including workshops, public consultation, exhibitions and inquiries. engineering design services as both client s representative and contractor s designer, including highways, drainage, earthworks, geotechnical and highway structures. management and planning of utilities provision and diversions/protection. project management and site support services including procurement advice, contract preparation and management, tender process, quantity surveying and works supervision. delivering new-build pedestrian, highway and watercourse-spanning structures as well as providing expert guidance on the re-use and maintenance of existing stock.

MAJOR HIGHWAY IMPROVEMENTS A453 WIDENING, NOTTINGHAM As a consultancy we are large enough to be able to resource complex and demanding projects such as this 150m project, but also small enough to care about building trust. Our multimodal assessment of this scheme, for the Highways Agency, enabled early identification of the key constraints and the development of a comprehensively resourced programme. We acted as the contractor s designer, successfully taking the project through preliminary design, ecological mitigation, statutory procedures (including a Public Inquiry), detailed design and construction supervision. The project scope covered both rural and urban carriageways, including pavement, lighting, signals and highway drainage, and the structural design of several bridges, junctions and flood relief structures. BRIDGE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION KIRKSTALL FORGE, LEEDS We are familiar with traditional materials and techniques but also enthusiastic about using unorthodox approaches to solve complex problems. At Kirkstall Forge, on the river Aire, we were initially appointed for geo-environmental services and have since been retained for the detailed design and delivery of a new link road and road bridge connecting with the nearby A65. The considerable drop across the site required substantial retaining walls and embankments to raise the river bank by 5m at one end and allow a suitable gradient on the approach to the bridge. Our innovative solution of a geo-grid reinforced soil bank seat allows a separate support structure for the bridge. This is the first time this system has been implemented above a fast flowing river in the UK. HIGHWAYS DESIGN SERVICES N8 CASHEL TO MITCHELSTOWN In the first Early Contractor Involvement type contract to be undertaken in Ireland we were appointed to prepare the EIS, preliminary design and detailed design. Our scheme included four separate interchanges and more than thirty structures to significantly reduce congestion in nearby villages. We developed innovative solutions such as sustainable drainage attenuation and emergency crossover barrier systems and were able to tailor the designs to support the contractor s methods of working. Thanks to this integrated approach, the new road was opened a year ahead of schedule.

SECURING PLANNING CONSENT Transport and connecting infrastructure is a fundamental part of enabling development. We support planning applications through identifying appropriate access, sustainable transport connections and examining residual traffic impacts and any need for highway mitigation works. Our services directly respond to the requirements of the Government s National Planning Policy Framework and its key focus on the delivery of sustainable development without delay. We tackle all transport aspects of a project, from initial assessment to presenting expert evidence at Public Inquiry and the subsequent project implementation. This includes providing transport assessments, transport statements, highway design, traffic modelling and travel plans. Our specialist teams have extensive experience in identifying access solutions and negotiating the highways and transport aspects of development proposals. Our core services include: transport assessments travel plans detailed design development planning site and access appraisals parking assessment and design Public Inquiries and consultation Section 106/278 Agreements & S75 RCC Rights of Way issues

EXPERT WITNESS PUBLIC INQUIRIES AND PLANNING APPEALS Senior WYG employees regularly stand as expert witnesses at Public Inquiries and Planning Appeals where development proposals fall under the scrutiny of the public, Counsel and her Majesty s Planning Inspectorate. We are relied upon to provide independent expert evidence and a smooth journey through the process of representing our client s interests. Our expert teams are frequently called upon by the top UK planning barristers to act in such cases and we have had considerable success helping the resolution of planning cases in appeals, Call-In Inquiries, written representations and informal hearings. We also act on behalf of interested objecting parties against planning applications which may be damaging to their interests. PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS REPRESENTING CLIENT PROPOSALS Engagement with stakeholders and local communities forms an increasingly important component of the planning system. We have a wealth of experience, across a range of sectors, devising and implementing local engagement strategies and are retained on many projects to represent our clients planning applications at public consultation events. Our approach is tailored to the individual needs of the proposal and can include targeted engagement of key stakeholders alongside organising and coordinating workshops and exhibitions. Our aim is to clearly communicate development plans and provide the public with an opportunity to discuss aspects of the scheme with the project team. Frequently, issues and suggestions raised by the public are subsequently incorporated into the scheme design. DOCUMENTATION & NEGOTIATIONS TO SUPPORT PLANNING APPLICATIONS Our expert teams have significant experience in producing the transport planning documents and in providing the robust evidence required to secure planning consents. Supporting documents include transport assessments and statements, travel plans and specific technical information. We have the knowledge, expertise and depth of understanding needed to respond to the challenge of securing planning consent on the most commercially advantageous basis. In addition to producing the technical evidence base, our teams are experienced in all associated negotiations.

ADVISING THE PUBLIC SECTOR Government of all forms continues to review and re-energise transport strategies and policies to aid growth, tackle environmental impacts and to take on board opportunities presented by new technologies. We provide the expertise to develop policy, forecast impacts, identify solutions, monitor the outcomes and deliver Local Authority projects. Several Local Authority transport departments employ our experts as seconded staff to work directly with their teams advising on key projects. Recent examples include working with Transport for London on its freight and cycling strategies, embedded WYG staff working with Transport for Greater Manchester to develop its public transport infrastructure and with Leicester City Council delivering public realm and transport interchange projects. Our experience and areas of expertise include: policy reviews, formulation and guidance strategic modelling and appraisal accessibility analysis options development, assessment and appraisal demand forecasting and appraisal freight planning and operational assessments funding and financing including Community Infrastructure Levy advice Local Plans delivery plans and programmes stakeholder and public engagement expert witness at public examinations

COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE LEVY (CIL) CHESTERFIELD BOROUGH COUNCIL As part of the Nationwide CIL Service, we provide planning, cost assessment and infrastructure expertise to support local authorities and land developers across the UK. Our work with Chesterfield Borough Council included the preparation of a viability appraisal for its CIL policy, draft charging schedules and providing a Regulation 123 list of potential infrastructure benefits. We acted as a critical friend and undertook a high level review of the available infrastructure evidence base. We were then able to advise the Council on whether this was robust and appropriate enough to support the CIL process and make recommendations on additional work needed to facilitate this. SCHEME AND STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT BOLTON-SALFORD CORRIDOR (BSC) Through a range of improvements, the BSC is aimed at making walking, cycling and bus travel in Bolton and Salford safer, quicker and more reliable. Following our initial appointment for design solutions and advice on measures to alleviate congestion, we were retained to develop the wider strategy within the context of Greater Manchester s Local Transport Plan. Using evidence based analysis, highways modelling and local consultation, we developed a series of Area-Based Strategies to deliver a comprehensive package of improvements, including better interchange with regional rail services, that will give over 100,000 local residents better access to employment and education opportunities throughout Greater Manchester. The strategies were also used in support an Outline Business Case prepared for Transport for Greater Manchester. WORK RELATED ROAD RISK (WRRR) FOR LONDON (TFL) The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme is operated by TfL to encourage safer working practices for road freight operators. As part of this scheme, we worked with TfL and several London boroughs to develop and implement measures, including the safer lorries WRRR procurement programme, to promote cycle safety initiatives and develop guidance documents to support these. We were commissioned to help define the objectives, outputs, relevant performance measures and associated costs. We also provided advice on how freight operators and local authorities could secure maximum funding to upgrade their fleet over a sustainable three year plan and reduce conflict between freight vehicles and cyclists thereby tackling the problems that arise daily on London s streets.

ASSESSING MOVEMENT At WYG, we understand that the movement of vehicles and people in a safe and efficient manner is vital to the success of all developments. From small residential sites through to major power infrastructure schemes, we have the knowledge and expertise to ensure the accessibility of our clients sites. We bring a practical approach to managing access during construction and to designing layouts that ease operational activities once the project is complete. Our long experience working with service yard operators, hauliers, local authorities and the police has given us the skills to ensure safe, convenient access routes and we know that simple, subtle adjustments are often the key to a successful road layout. Our transport team is a market leader in planning the movement of abnormal loads around the road network. We have undertaken wind farm access studies throughout the UK and Europe, helping developers and utilities move loads up to 70m in length, over 7m in width and up to 300tonnes in weight. Whatever the restrictions, whatever your vehicle, WYG has the experience and expertise to ensure you get there as quickly, efficiently and safely as possible. Our range of services includes: abnormal load routing construction traffic management planning service yard design constrained internal site layout design car park design

ABNORMAL INDIVISIBLE LOADS (AIL) WIND FARM ROUTE SURVEYS WYG has undertaken detailed AIL route surveys in support of wind farm and other power related or construction projects for a large number of developers, utilities and construction firms. Using state of the art swept path assessment models, we can accurately advise on any highway works required to move loads from port to site. Our expertise extends to stakeholder relationship management and providing expert witness at Public Inquiries and hearings. We have specialist knowledge of the constraints and impacts of moving abnormal turbine loads and, with over 400 wind farms worth of experience, have close links with hauliers and equipment manufacturers so can provide independent advice to help minimise the need for expensive physical works. We have also adapted these skills to the movement of electrical transformers, solar farm components, large-scale industrial machinery and over-size construction components. TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT PLANS LOW COST, HIGHLY EFFECTIVE IMPROVEMENTS We develop traffic management concepts from feasibility through to implementation. In many circumstances our operational traffic advice has demonstrated alternative solutions to traditional engineering interventions and has improved road safety and reduced traffic congestion at far less expense. Our expertise is in the analysis of existing streetscape, and strategic planning of new road priorities, traffic holding areas and signing schemes. We have applied this to moving single abnormal loads down narrow country lanes and to managing temporary demand at large scale sporting or cultural events. Alongside various local authorities we have developed straightforward schemes to improve traffic circulation. These meet cost and impact objectives within the restrictions of planning legislation and local development frameworks. CONSTRAINED SITES ASSESSING INTERNAL MOVEMENT We work with major retailers assessing access and movement on constrained sites for new build stores and on extensions or estate improvements. Ensuring the security and timing of deliveries is essential for these businesses and we have assisted in developing safe service yards and delivery strategies throughout the UK. Our modelling and evaluation of loading docks and turning areas provides the basis for appropriate layout design and vehicle management plans that suit existing store requirements and cope with future plans.

SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL Providing people with the ability to travel in a sustainable way has never been more important as the UK seeks to address road congestion and air quality concerns. Government bodies and private businesses alike are looking at ways to improve the way we travel through integrated town planning, infrastructure improvements and travel awareness. We work with our clients to identify how sustainable travel options can be maximised and a balance struck between the need to travel and the resulting impact on our environment. The types of services that we offer include: accessibility appraisals identifying how people are able to travel by sustainable modes route corridor studies providing a balance for all road users along key routes travel plans & monitoring delivering workable travel plans, support during implementation and monitoring studies to identify successes and areas for improvement consultation and promotion working with members of the public to understand what motivates their travel choices bus infrastructure improving journey times and facilities smarter use of technology such as real time information and vehicle location systems to improve the user experience pedestrian studies from high level walking assessments to identifying infrastructure improvements cycling studies route assessments and facilities design consolidated waste and servicing reducing the number of freight vehicles required to service local facilities

SMARTER USE OF TECHNOLOGY BUSTRACKER SESTRAN Working with South East Scotland Transport Partnership, we implemented ambitious Real Time Passenger Information and Automatic Vehicle Location systems that have been lauded as a step change in encouraging sustainable travel. Our experts were involved from system specification and tender appraisal to project management, testing and commissioning of both fleet management and passenger information systems. This included bus priority, web and smart phone applications for a fleet of 630 buses and over 400 street signs. Users across eight local authorities now have access to up-to-date information on bus times, including live news of disruptions and delays. In recognition of the system s impact on the transport network it was named Local Authority Bus Project of the Year in 2014 and we have since been retained to deliver further system expansion. INTEGRATED CYCLING FACILITIES CONKERS NATIONAL FOREST VISITOR CENTRE The primary aim of this project was to maximise public access to the National Forest, particularly for those with lessened mobility or no easy access to a car. We were appointed as lead designer for the 8.3km cycle route and then retained to provide construction and project management services including supervising construction of the route. Our design took into account difficult construction access, in order to avoid disturbing existing vegetation, and retained local drainage characteristics to provide a surfaced path that blended in with the woodland setting. The completed scheme has made a significant contribution to the development of National Cycle Route 63 which represents the main spinal cycle route through the National Forest. The project was delivered on time and under budget and provides a safe, aesthetically pleasing and easily accessible cycling route. CITY CENTRE PEDESTRIAN ZONES LEICESTER CITY COUNCIL The Connecting Leicester vision involves a series of schemes aimed at improving the pedestrian and cycle routes across Leicester city centre linking heritage, tourist, educational and retail areas. We were appointed for the overall design of the city centre pedestrian zone and to help take the plans from feasibility through to delivery of the completed scheme. The completed scheme has won several prestigious awards including the National Transport Award for Walking in the Public Realm and the British Council of Shopping Centres Gold Award We have continued to provide technical expertise to the Council in re-shaping the zone to meet the needs of cyclists, parking and servicing for this busy and vibrant city centre.
