1 + IN Barry Curtis Park, Isthmus LARC 570B Autumn 2016 Ken Yocom, PhD Gould 114, M/W Office Hours: Th F Course Website: Schedule Office Hours: hours/ Theory is the set of foundational principles upon which a discipline frames both its subject and the methods used to explore that subject. In turn, scholarship disseminates the intellectual and practical exploration of theory. In landscape architecture, they form the intellectual scaffolding of thoughtful, responsive design investigations, and inform our perspectives on the larger issues associated with design projects. In other words, together they shape the way, we as designers, think and approach the contextual environmental, socio- cultural, political and economic issues in any project. Through inquiry into the theory and scholarship of landscape architecture, this seminar will help you to consider the intellectual foundations of your chosen discipline and better equip you to engage in the larger issues you will encounter in your professional work. Exploring the role of theory, scholarship and inquiry in landscape architecture is part of what sets you, as master s candidates, apart from undergraduates in the professional degree program. Such scholarly endeavors form the hallmark of graduate education. While scholarly pursuits are not easy for everyone, this seminar offers an opportunity for you to examine and discuss key theories in landscape architecture. Ideally, this course will help clarify your own thinking about the field and how you position yourself within the profession. Learning Objectives: To examine important theories in landscape architecture + consider how they apply to design To develop abilities in critical thinking + constructive critique To frame + articulate perspectives on design thinking To engage in the construction + articulation of scholarly investigations THEORY SCHOLARSHIP LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
2 Process: 1.Dialogic Learning: This class is designed based on a strong belief that our learning is enhanced through dialogue. The richness of this course depends on your engagement with the issues raised in class and in the readings, and your willingness to discuss those issues with one another. A good discussion happens when participants are prepared and willing to share observations, to listen carefully and thoughtfully to one another, to find key ideas in the literature and discussions, and to provide critique in a constructive manner. Each student is expected to contribute meaningfully to class discussions. Trust me! This will make the class more interesting for everyone. A) Discussion Lead: Each class session, two students will take the lead, diving deeper into the readings and provide several (3-5) points of discussion and/or questions as well as a short verbal biography of the authors. Each student should only need to do this once during the term. The points/questions will be sent to me by 12pm prior to the day of the class. During the class, the students may be called upon to lead a portion of the discussion or to frame a perspective. 2. Reflection and Application Assignments: There are several assignments in the class that will enable you to practice both writing and applying theory to design. Writing is often neglected in design education, but this is a critical skill that enables you to articulate your emerging design philosophy, vision, and goals as a designer. This is an important part of cultivating your individual voice as emerging designers. Writing clearly and convincingly will assist you in selling your design work both as a student and practitioner. Additionally, for many students, theory and design are perceived as distinct endeavors. The class assignments are intended to help you see how theory and design are connected by asking you to apply the theory we learn to design projects either built projects or your studio explorations. A) [Pro]flective Essay: Reflection is a valuable tool for learning and growth. Your first assignment will be a reflective essay that asks you to consider why you have chosen to be a landscape architect, what specifically about the field excites you the most, and what values and goals drive your work. Reflecting on your perspective and value now will help guide your development as you continue your education and career. B) Design in Theory Papers: A useful way to get familiar with theory is to consider how it may be represented through design. With this in mind, you are asked to write two Design in Theory Papers ( words). You have a few options to choose from in writing these papers: (1) You can find examples of a built project that you think represents and embodies the theory well, (provide pictures of aspects of the design that reflect the theory); or (2) you could apply these theories to your ongoing studio project (demonstrate how these theories are informing your design work and show examples). C) Final Paper: For many, identifying an area of interest, reviewing the available literature, and articulating a cogent perspective is a difficult task. Yet, with a structured approach and good feedback the process can be enlightening. We will work to construct the final paper throughout the term through three steps: 1) Review and present in a workshop format, no less than three previously completed theses to examine, structure, approach and use of theory; 2) Draft and present, in a workshop format, a detailed outline of an exploration into theory and constructive critique; 3) Compose a relatively short paper that articulates a critical examination of theory through the context of design applications. The final paper will range from 2,500-3,500 words. 2
3 Student Responsibilities: Your most critical responsibility is to take your education seriously. This means being prepared for and engaged in the class by doing the readings and actively participating in the discussion. It means attending each class, prepared and on time, and reliably completing each assignment. Secondary to that, but only by just a little, is the quality of the work you produce. In my view, the quality of students work is greatly enhanced when the work is approached with intellectual curiosity and a sincere desire to learn and grow. Other Policies: This class is governed by all of the University s student policies, including those on plagiarism and multiple submissions. It is your responsibility to be familiar with these.
