2 WINERY IN O RIBEIRO Cabanelas, Galicia, Spain Awards: Second prize in III Competition PFC FYM-Italcementi Group The project is placed in Cabanelas, within the Denomination of origin O Ribeiro, one of the most important wine regions in Galicia (Spain). The landscape of Cabanelas is characterized by been humanly modified. The slopes are modified through terraces in order to allow cultivation and buildings are usually small stone constructions. In the intervention area several old stone constructions exist which will be rehabilitated and included in the project. The key of the project consist of integrating a big industrial building into the fabric of a rural village, respecting the scale without affecting the good functioning of the winery. The principal volumes of the winery are fragmented, adapting to the scale of the existing constructions and are connected through a walking platform, which connects the different levels of the ground. The parts of the program which could work individually (the winetourism apartments) are used to complete the volumetry. The fragmentation of the volumes responds on the one hand to the connection between two groups of existing constructions and on the other hand to the most interesting views. With the new public space on the roof of the winery, a continuous scale with the village public space has been achieved. Here the visitors could see the interior of the winery without interfering in the work. The winery operates following a circular scheme around a courtyard, using the same area for the entrance of the grape and the exit of the wine. The materiality is defined by the concrete walls and roofs which compensate the visual weight of the old stone constructions. The finish roughness allows the building change with time, improving its integration into the landscape. The winery owner s house is placed within the northern group of old constructions because It is the most private place within the area (the rest is visually dominated from the village plaza). The geometry is defined by the two existing pieces. This pieces are connected through a new platform which allows conservation of the original entrances. 01

9 URBAN REGENERATION OF THE BREAD FACTORY OF VIGO Vigo, Galicia, Spain Co-author: María Luisa Alonso Machado Awards: Honorable Mention in the SC2013 Links competition The Bread Factory is one of the symbols of the industrial architecture of Vigo. It is located in a privileged place in the city, next to City Hall and bordering with the Old town and the remains of the San Sebastian castle. Currently neglected, some of its buildings are in ruins. Because of this, SC2013 Links: Urban regeneration competition is convened to find solutions to regenerate the area and return life to the Bread Factory. The main objective of the project is to improve city connections while the identity of the Bread Factory remains. It aims to connect existing underutilized public spaces solving the cross-connection between the City Hall square and the Alfonso XII street and longitudinal-connection between San Sebastian Castle and the rest of the urban fabric. New small public spaces are created inside the project area meanwhile most of the existing buildings are preserved. New pieces are placed in the most damaged areas and the new buildings are located outside the Bread Factory area. The uses are distributed with the aim of revitalize public spaces and allow the connection between buildings, placing compatible uses in the connection points. The Bread Factory complex becomes a node which generates urban life around. 08

12 ASIENTO4SOL Madrid, Spain Project for Asiento4sol competition. The aim was the design of a new seating element for Puerta del Sol of Madrid, made with Slimconcrete technology of Escofet (UHPC concrete). Analyzing Puerta del Sol and its existing urban furniture, the need for shade is observed. This need is solved in the surrounding streets with awnings, and in the plaza with trees randomly placed. The new seating element will be used to place these trees giving shade to the plaza. The most remarkable characteristic of Slimconcrete is the slenderness allowed, derived from the increase of resistance over common concrete. Cantilever pieces are designed to emphasize this feature. The element is composed by several concrete cantilever volumes joined by a steel piece. This piece allows modules to counterweigh each other, leaving space in between for placing the trees. The multiple combinations of modules and the shaded space under the trees will create a resting place for both citizens and tourists in the center of Madrid. 11

14 TEA FIELDS HOTEL Hengshan, Hunan, China Project for The legend of Tent competition. The aim of the competition was the design of a hotel which must meet four conditions: Be mobile with little or none impact on the ground, reflect elements of the local culture, be sustainable with low carbon emissions, and have a programme similar to a high quality hotel. One of the proposed locations was Hengshan, one of the five sacred mountains of Taoism. It is a region with a rich culture where Buddhism and Taoism coexist. It is a mountain range formed by 72 peaks, full of vegetation and usually surrounded by mist. The project is located in an agricultural area in order to respect the ancient forest and its biodiversity. This area, now neglected, will be rehabilitated for tea cultivation, which stands as a representative of the culture and landscape of Hengshan. A sustainable tourism model in which local people will be involved is proposed. Thanks to tea fields the tourists will have the opportunity to learn about Chinese culture and at the same time the local economy will be stimulated. The tea production waste is used as solid fuel in a biomass boiler to produce hot water and the water used in the hotel is purified and reused for irrigating the tea fields. The hotel is designed for assembling quickly and easily and once dismantled it takes little space to be stored. Because of this reason it consumes minimal resources during assembly and transportation. The room modules are disaggregated over the tea fields in order to integrate them in the landscape. Communal spaces as dining room, entrance lobby and ball room are grouped and located in the lower zone. Elements of traditional architecture, as courtyard, are interpreted. The communal spaces are located around a courtyard which allows the connections and the views. The use of wood in the structure and the polyhedral shape are also derived from traditional Chinese architecture. 13

18 GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI Helsinki, Finland Co-author: María Luisa Alonso Machado Project for the Guggenheim Helsinki Design Competition. The intervention place is located in the confluence of three representative landscapes of Helsinki: The Tahititornin Vuori Park, the bay and the city itself. The museum will capture these landscapes while It solves the transition between the public area and the port area, allowing the passage of trucks without affecting the public space around it, as well as the connections between the city, the park and the Olympia terminal. The museum shape is composed by a base which absorbs the port traffic and solves the urban connections, and by three volumes connected to this base which defines the project image and frame the views of the surrounding landscapes. The shape of the volumes responds to the environment. Its roofs bend to the park taking the cornice line of maritime facade as highest point, avoiding to cover the views. A public space is crated over the base, between the volumes, belonging to both the city and the museum. In this space visitors and citizens could enjoy the three landscapes mixed with the museum volumes. The entrance volume is an interior public space conceived as a transition between the city and the exhibitions. Its sea facade is made of glass, enhancing the visual connection with the sea, with the city as a backdrop. At night this volume acts as a great beacon which welcomes visitors who arrive to Helsinki through the bay. The exhibition areas are placed in the bigger volume. It consists of flexible spaces, with variable high and light intensity, capable of hosting a variety of works which a contemporary art museum needs to exhibit. The lowest volume contains staff offices and the conference hall. It is the most regular volume because it is the closest to the urban fabric. The base, besides of serve as a conection between the volumes, contains technical areas, loading docks and storages. In conclusion, the aim of the project is to create a museum that captures the surrounding landscape while it is integrated in the seafront and resolves connections with the city. It will be a extension of the public space, a place which attracts both visitors from abroad and Helsinki citizens. 17
