2 THE PROJECT The purpose of our project is to develop an alternative to the Guggenheim museum at the very same competition site while preserving the existing function of the hangar as a passengers terminal. A project that contains in its storage,the stock of the national gallery (art museum Ateneum, Kiasma and the Sinebrychoff Art Museum). In fact, these museums contain a total of 36,000 works in their basements. Why should we import art and then exhibit it in a globalized museum? Therefore, we propose to show what has never been showed by reversing the iceberg. The art is thus exhibited under a new perspective. The visitor is now able to discover the artworks from the unloading stage all the way to the storage and in all stages of restoration and conservation. The terminal is surrounded by two overlapping ramps, one for the visitors and one for the services. This arrangement provides a visual contact between the 2 paths which never intersect. After going through all stages of preliminary treatment, the artwork is stored in a large levitating box above the hangar. The visitor accesses this last space by suddenly passing from a compressed space to a room of 25 meters high. In the Storage, the art is grouped by levels depending on its adequate temperature and humidity m2 of stock where visitors slips in to discover the art of storing and all the artwork that the national gallery of the city keeps below the ground. Finally, the 6 levels visit ends with a panoramic view accessible from an open escalator where we can enjoy a 360 degrees view of the city from 35 meters high
