Students face matters of urban integration, design and integrity of built and open space, and solve complex architectural-functional problems.they also conceive and design the load bearing structure of the building, solve main constructional issues and design all critical architectural details of their project THE PROJECT The Design project of the 7 th and 8 th semester is a Center of Contemporary Art in a central urban area of Castella in Piraeus, near the seafront. The aim of the course is to study and resolute basic architectural problems associated mainly with : A.The integration of the new project in the city. B. The design of a public multi-storey building,-developed in height -with a complex functional program. In this design project students will focus on: the concept of a Centre of Contemporary Art. the relation of the building to the special landscape of Castella and the city of Pireaus the materiality and the structure construction of the building.( Basic construction materials, load bearing structure composition, in relation to interior design and general architectural proposition ) In order to work on these project students will have to get informed about different issues, such as: - History of Piraeus, the harbor, Castella, the coastline etc. - Expressive diversity of contemporary art - Variety of spaces, forms and ways suitable for contemporary art exhibition - Concept of exhibition space as part of the Art activity - Contemporary art and urban context

They also support activities of wider cultural interest and have the possibility to function independently. They include: 1. Foyer. It can be part of the wider entrance area and covers activities that cannot be supported by the multi-purpose hall due to its particular layout. 2. Cloakroom. It will serve the whole building small multi-purpose hall for 150 people (1.2m 2 /person) for projections, lectures, public talks, conferences etc., with podium/stage. PERIODIC EXHIBITIONS SPACES people area Total m 2 These spaces are limited to temporarily hosting exhibitions from Greece or abroad. The spectrum of exhibitions will be broad. There will also be exhibitions of architecture, photography, industrial design. High flexibility and adaptability of these spaces in all three dimensions is required, in order to adapt to the scale and quantity of exhibits of each exhibition. At the same time the exhibition spaces should support the possibility to be subdivided into smaller unities, in order to cover multiple manifestations of contemporary art. This parameter means that space is not merely a receptor but incorporates in its structure the possibility of subdivision. Indicatively its subdivision into two equivalent or more spaces is suggested. The requirement for controlled open air exhibition space is particularly elevated. The layout of exhibition spaces should enable alternative possibilities of movement of the visitors amongst the exhibits, from and towards the reception space. At the same time it should be possible to interrupt this route and direct it towards reception. Entrance and exit from the exhibition spaces will be controlled. It is recommended to insert into the exhibition route resting areas for the visitors that could be combined with audiovisual presentations regarding the exhibits. Sanitary spaces should be provided in intelligible positions. total 1000 D. LIBRARY people area Total m 2 The library will contain art books. Intermediately, there are programmed presentations in the level of study groups or wider, that will be determined during courses. During every semester the presence of students at the design lessons and the participation in the group work is obligatory 7 th - winter semester In the end of 7 th semester the following will be handed in: -Analysis of the wider region, where the building is situated - Topographic drawing with the configuration of open spaces, the accesses and the choices of integration of building in the urban tissue, scale 1: 200, - Models of work in scale 1: 500, 1: Plans of all levels with projections of close environment, organisation of spaces and their operations, sections, facades as well as the organization of load bearing structure, in scale 1: Every other element or drawing that will be judged essential for the better presentation of the project. 8th - spring semester In the 8 th semester, a more detailed analysis and design of the project takes place. Students continue designing the building and surrounding landscape area in smaller scales. They select a part -a zone- of the building, of special interest, which they study in scales 1:50 and 1:20-1:10, with the corresponding constructional details. The load bearing structure is solved and studied in detail Also, adequate axonometric, 3d drawings and models (usually1:50) are constructed.
