2 Occupational Health and Safety Each delegate has a duty of care to fellow delegates by ensuring that they shall, at all times whilst participating at the 12 th Pacific Science Inter-Congress (12PSIC), not take any action or make any omission that creates a risk or increases an existing risk to the health and safety of any delegate including themselves or other persons, whether delegate or not at the 12PSIC. Each delegate participating at the 12 th Pacific Science Inter Congress has a duty of care to comply with the health and safety regulations of the University of the South pacific, and to make themselves aware of the emergency procedures of the university. These include USP Emergency Phone Contact List Campus Injury & Medical Emergencies Building Fire emergency procedures, evacuations and emergency assembly areas Building Earthquake & Tsunami emergency procedures, evacuations and tsunami evacuation sites. No Smoking Policy in Campus Buildings Designated Smoking areas Litter Disposal. We hope that this Booklet will provide you with the necessary health and safety information that you require to make you experience here at the University of the South Pacific Laucala campus a safe one. 2

8 THE JAPAN PACIFIC ICT THEATER BUILDING SAFETY INFORMATION The ICT Theatre is a large conference venue of international standards that is capable of seating several hundred people in a comfortable air conditioned environment. It is located on Vanua Drive in the central area of the university Laucala Main upper campus. You may easily walk to this building via the Pedestrian Gate along Sunderland North Drive or drive to it from the campus main gate It has a ground level access from the front main entrance and a 1 st level access from the car park at the rear of the building. There is also an internal stairway connecting both levels inside the building. 8

9 EMERGENCY EXITS ICT LECTURE THEATER There are 3 emergency exits, whereby persons may exit the auditorium. The main exit is located at the main entrance door labelled Exit 1 and there are 2 secondary exits, labelled Exits 2 ( on the ground floor ) and Exit 3 ( side door exit ) as noted in the ICT auditorium floor plan below. 9

10 Emergency Assembly Areas for ICT theatre Fire In the event of a Fire or Fire Alarm, you are requested to evacuate outside the building using the exit doors closest to you and make your way down Vanua Drive roundabout and across to the Red 1 Emergency Assembly Area located at the grounds between the Library and Administration Building. Figure 1 Vanua Drive Roundabout and Grounds between Library and Administration Building Earthquake / Tsunami Evacuation Routes & Sites for ICT Theatre In the event of a large earthquake or tsunami, you are requested to evacuate outside the building using the exit doors closest to you and make your way up Vanua Drive the road located close to the 10

11 building and walk uphill to the roundabout and grounds adjacent to the campus life administration building. Blue 5 is the Tsunami Evacuation Site located at the roundabout close to Campus Life administration Building at the top of Vanua Drive. DISABILITY ACCESS Wheel Chair borne persons may access the Japan Pacific ICT Centre building using the front entrance. They can then access the auditorium directly using the secondary entrance / Exit 2, which is located at the ground level. 11

12 DESIGNATED SMOKING AREAS The internal areas of the Japan Pacific ICT Centre Building are No Smoking areas. There are 2 designated smoking areas for this Japan Pacific ICT Centre building The first is the car park located at the Rear of the building and the second is at the front passageway of the Japan Pacific ICT Centre Building. 13 THE MAIN LECTURE THEATER AT THE LAUCALA LOWER CAMPUS The main lecture theatre at the Laucala lower campus is a large teaching auditorium capable of seating more than a 100 persons at one seating. There are 2 large main entrance doors at the rear of the building and 2 smaller doors at the front sides of the building These 4 doors also serve as exit doors for this building. There are male and female toilets at the back of the main lecture theatre close to the large entrance doors. There are accessible toilets also within the main school of marine studies building at the ground level adjacent to the main entrance. DISABILITY ACCESS For persons on wheelchairs access into the building can be done through doors 3 and 4, where they can than sit in the front row of the audience. Toilet There is an accessible disability toilet located at the marina building adjacent to the main lecture theatre. 13

14 Building Emergency Exits The main lecture theatre at the Laucala Lower Campus has large exit doors 1 & 2 at the rear entrance of the building and 2 smaller exit doors (3 & 4) in the front and sides of the lecture theatre. In the event of an emergency involving fire, earthquake or Tsunami, you must evacuate the building using exit doors closest to you and make you to the emergency assembly area. 3 FRONT 4 Seating Area Seating Area Seating Area 2 Studio 1 Fire The emergency assembly area is located at the grounds adjacent to the main front entrance of the Lower campus. Remain in this assembly area until the ALL CLEAR is given by the Fiji National Fire Authority officers or USP Fire wardens 14

15 Main Entrance LOWER CAMPUS Earthquake / Tsunami Evacuation Route and Site for Lower Campus The entire lower campus is located on the Laucala coastline which is a high tsunami inundation risk area. In the event of a large earthquake or tsunami it is important that you evacuate the lower campus immediately and proceed towards the upper campus. 15

16 The Tsunami evacuation site closest to you at upper campus is at Drew Street located up the Laucala Bay road. University emergency wardens and personnel will assist you in this evacuation. During the evacuation Do not waste time collecting personal possessions. Run or Jog uphill by the most direct route, do not travel by motor vehicles On your radio and obtain updates from Radio Emergency bulletins Beware of Live electrical wires and hazards if an earthquake has occurred Keep in close contact with your colleagues Do not return to Lower Campus unless the All Clear is given by Radio Emergency bulletins Unable to evacuate In the event you are unable to evacuate the lower campus and tsunami waves begin inundating the coastline, move instead to multiple story buildings like the School of Marine Studies building and climb up to the upper floors of the building and secure yourself. On your radio and obtain updates from Radio Emergency bulletins. Designated Smoking Areas for Lower Campus The outside seating area beside the reclaimed fore shore grounds adjacent to the Lower Campus Marina is the designated smoking area for the Lower campus You may access this area from the main lecture theatre by walking on the footpath leading adjacent to the cafeteria. The marina and workshop area is strictly a no smoking area, as it has flammable liquid storage on site; it is also a restricted entry area. 16

17 THE AUSAID LECTURE THEATER AT UPPER LAUCALA CAMPUS The Au said Lecture Theatre is a large teaching and learning Building closest to the main gate entrance to Laucala Upper campus. You are Here The building has 2 large lecture theatres, the large lecture theatre 2 facing Moana drive and the later lecture theatre 1 facing the Library end of the building. 19 Emergency Exits Both lecture theatres have 4 exit doors, with 2 on each side of the building During an emergency you must exit the theatre using the exit closest to you and move out of the building. You must than proceed as fast as you can to the emergency assembly area FIRE EMERGENCY ASSEMBLY AREAS FOR AUSAID LECTURE THEATERS. In the event of a fire, you must make your way speedily to Yellow 1 emergency assembly area located at the grounds adjacent to Moana Drive and Student Main Car Park. You would be able to see this assembly area from the Au said Lecture Theatre. USP Security and fire wardens will assist you in this evacuation. 19

20 EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMI EVACUATION ROUTE AND SITE FOR AUSAID LECTURE THEATER In the event of a large earthquake and tsunami you must evacuate the whole building and surrounding low-lying area and move uphill on Moana Drive towards Sunderland North Drive and trek by footpath up Veikau Walk towards tsunami evacuation site at Drew Street. USP Security and Wardens will assist you in this evacuation. 20

21 N111 LECTURE THEATER The N111 lecture theatre is located at the Laucala Upper Campus within the Faculty of Science Environment and Technology main building. ICT theatre Au said Lecture Theatres Dining Hall N111 FSTE It is a medium sized lecture theatre that is able to accommodate between persons. It has 2 large entrance doors at the rear, and 1 smaller side door at the left frontend corner of the building. N111 Lecture theatre. 21

22 Floor Plan Level 2 FSTE Main Building Chemistry Labs Toilets include Disability Biology Biology Labs FSTE Car Park You are here N111 Disability Access to the FSTE Building N111 is located on Level 2 of the FSTE Main Building There is an elevator at the ground level of the main FSTE Building where wheelchair borne persons may use to access the upper floors of the building. 22

23 Disability Toilet at Main FSTE Building There is a Disability Toilet at the 2 nd level of the main FSTE Building, which is at the same level as the N111 lecture theatre. Disability Access to N111 Building There is a disability ramp adjacent to the left main entrance door to this lecture theatre. Disability Ramp Smoking Designated Areas N111 Lecture theatre Designated smoking areas for N111 include the outdoor concrete pathway adjacent to the lecture theatre stairway. N111 23

24 FIRE In the event of a fire or fire alarm you must evacuate the lecture area using the exit door closest to you and move to the designated emergency assembly area. Do not use elevators in the event of a fire. N111 Emergency Assembly Area for N111 and Main FSTE Building Fire In the event of a fire or fire alarm you must proceed to the emergency assembly area located at the Grounds between the CRC Gym and the Tennis Court. 24

25 FSTE CRC N111 GYM USP Security officers and FSTE Building wardens will assist and direct you in this evacuation. EARTHQUAKE & TSUNAMI EVACUATION ROUTE & SITE FOR FSTE & N111 BUILDINGS. In the event of a large earthquake or tsunami it is important that you evacuate the entire FSTE Buildings and proceed as fast as you can towards the tsunami evacuation site located at the upper end of vanua drive past the ITC Buildings. 25

27 LITTER DISPOSAL AT LAUCALA CAMPUS The University of the South Pacific is actively pursuing the theme of being a Green university meaning the active recycling, reuse and reduction of waste generated by the university community on campus. The placement of litter trolley bins on campus reflects this commitment. The university community is encouraged to segregate their waste at source by placing each type of waste in their designated trolley bin. We encourage you to participate actively in this activity by disposing your waste in the appropriate bin nearest to you. 27
