7 Hong Kong Central Library Project The Urban Council provides free library services in the urban areas through a network of 33 libraries to meet community needs for information, informal education and the profitable use of leisure. The Central Library under planning will be the largest purpose-built public library in Hong Kong on completion. Details are as follows:- Roles: The Central Library will be the Administravtive Headquarters and the main library for the Urban Council Public Libraries system which aims to serve the community in the following ways:- a) as an information centre where information and the latest development on all subject disciplines are freely and readily available to the public; b) as a centre for the promotion of Hong Kong literary arts and literary research - to cultivate public interest in creative writing and literary research, to encourage and promote literary writing, to preserve Hong Kong literature, and promote cultural exchange; c) as a source of enjoyment for the profitable use of leisure where reading materials, including audio-visual materials, may be borrowed for home use; d) as a community cultural centre where a wide range of library activities are organized to provide information, recreation and relaxation for patrons of all age groups; e) as a tool for self-education and continuing education through resource-based learning; and f) as a source for the enrichment of every day living where members of the public may learn about current affairs, hobbies and leisure pursuits. 9 - Toilet facilities on all public floors. - Compact shelving for closed stack areas. - Some 400 public access terminals and microcomputers throughout the library to facilitate searching of library catalogues, use of multi-media programmes and online database searches through Internet. - An User Education Hall with hands-on exhibits and display for library orientation and group visits. - A 24-hour bookdrop for the return of library materials outside library opening hours. - Self-charging terminals for users. - Video wall on library services available for group orientation. - Information kiosks on library and other Council services on all floors of the library. Hiring facilities: - A 2,000m 2 Exhibition Gallery which can be partitioned into 5 smaller exhibtition halls for hiring. - A 300-seat Lecture Theatre. - 2 Extension Activities Rooms for lectures, meetings and workshops. Transport: - Served by bus route nos. 2, 2A, 5, 5B, 8, 8X, 10,11,11A, 15B, 19, 23, 23A, 23B, 25, 26, 27, 38, 38A, 42, 63, 65, 72, 72A, 76, 81, 92, 96, 99, 102, 106, 108, 110, 112, 116, 122, 511, 592, 601, 603, 680, 690, 691, Public Light Buses, Trams and MTR (Causeway Bay and Tin Hau Station) car-parks for service vehicles and coaches for pre-arranged group visits (provision of an underground public car-park in an adjacent site is being explored under a separate project).
