1 PLANNING FOR THE NEXT HELSINKI
2 0. SITE ANALYSIS 204 CONTROVERSY/PROPOSITION GUGGENHEIM PROPOSAL NEXT HELSINKI FUTURE DEVELOPMENT The Guggenheim Foundation has launched a design competition for a new Guggenheim building and the chosen site is the South Harbor, eliminating the actual use of the Makasiini Terminal, one of the most important tourist arrival place, in a short time. Our project intends to enable the urbanization of the South Harbour of Helsinki, and its ownership in a human scale, connecting the Park with the Harbor. According to the analysis of the Next Helsinki Competition, the main need of the city is transformation with benefits to enrich the future of the city. Our proposal wish to integrate the demands of the city and has as main feature the "temporality". The project enable to keep the current use and to receive differents future proposals. We propose a Park to connect the Harbour with the city that can be build by 2050.
3 02. THE CREATIVE PROCESS The project intends to enable the urbanization of the South Harbour of Helsinki and its ownership in a human scale. According to the analysis of the Next Helsinki Competition, the main need of the city is transformation with benefits, and in other words, a change that wants to enrich the future of the city. As the city of Helsinki is to strengthen its brand in global competitiveness, ensuring urban sustainability with technology, increasing urban culture and artistic use of public spaces, do a project that dialogue with these characteristics and directed to the new city plan "Helsinki 2050" is a challenge. We wish to integrate the demands of the city in the project, our program has as main feature the "temporality" and it will be built in the current context but thinking in many differents changes in the future. We choosed the site between the Park and the Makasiini Terminal, it is a parking area of trucks work in the Harbour. It consists of three pedestrian bridges and little buildings to connect the park with the harbour, creating public cultural spaces co-related to art and it can generate a human appropriation of the project. 4 0. THE CREATIVE PROCESS To start the draw of the bridges we choosed specific path points in the Park. To find a connection with the Habour we fixed the road like a simetrical line. After that we did a mirror projection of the strategical points in the harbour plan. Each brigde has a different height from the start point to the end point. To respect the use of the Harbour, trucks work and 0% inclination we did a lot of adjustments to arrive at the final design. It was very important to create activities to call people to walk in the brigdes and arrive in the new available area. These activities are a Restaurant on waterside, one tower with library and reading zones and finally, one small pavillion the control for the port.
