4 WATER & EARTH Earth is a spaceship: no way to restore or increase its natural resources Water vapour and all atmospheric phenoma and consequently the water cycle - are contained within the first part of the atmosphere (troposphere), a very thin layer of 8 10 km thickness (10 km on average) The total amount of water on Earth is about x 10 6 km 3 (1 360 millions of cube kilometres, 1/1 000 of the volume of the planet), therefore water is a very limited resource water cycle troposphere CARLO BRUSCHI

6 The estimate amount of 250 x 10 3 km 3 of rivers and lakes fresh water - the only one easily accessible to the mankind is only the 1/5 440 of the whole existing water, and 1/6 of the available fresh water Hence the huge responsibility of each human being on Earth for a correct use, management, preservation, safeguard and saving of this priceless natural resource (no water, no life) This problem, firstly and above all, concerns: WE, the landscape architects as planners and designers of a more sustainable world YOU, the irrigation systems producers as services, facilities and materials suppliers to make that possible WE ARE FIGHTING, SIDE BY SIDE, THE SAME WAR FROM THE SAME TRENCH CARLO BRUSCHI

7 From landscape architects point of view, the purposes of irrigation systems usually are: give water to the soil/plants systems > moisten irrigation (ordinary, extraordinary, assistance) give nutritious elements to the plants > fertilizing irrigation (fertigation) control plants temperature > thermic irrigation control climatic elements > climatic irrigation (e.g. mist propagation) dilute the excess of salt into the soil > purifying irrigation fight against plants diseases, parasites and predators > drug distribution irrigation (anti-parasites, herbal drugs and herbicidals) take back the soil to optimal humidity conditions > soil cultivation working facilitating irrigation fight against (or at least control) the spreading of fire > fire prevention irrigation (e.g. perimetral irrigation) CARLO BRUSCHI

8 STARTING PROFESSIONAL HINTS In developing your corporate planning, it could be opportune to take into account that: Landscape architects are usually barely informed about irrigation systems features and details, nonetheless they are often given the responsibility to select the most suitable irrigation equipment for the landscape works where they are involved in > more efforts in circulating useful and detailed information are urgently required The European Landscape Convention states that it applies to the entire territory of the Parties and covers natural, rural, urban and peri-urban areas. It includes lands, inland water and marine areas. It concerns landscapes that might be considered outstanding as well as everyday or degraded landscapes. (ELC, article 2) > in consequence, landscape architects, especially in Europe, have often to deal with very fragile enviroments and buildings (e.g. historical parks and gardens, endangered territories, polluted areas, etc.): is there the possibility to provide us with special equipment? Safeguard and saving of fresh water is more than a must for human beings really wishing to give the mankind a future > help us in fighting the current waste of water with more and more suitable equipment The quality of each irrigation system depends not only on the selected equipment but also, and above all, on the ability of the installation designer to give an adequate and sustanaible answer to all specific features and issues of a given landscape site and work > make all possible efforts for the education and training for irrigation systems designers more to come CARLO BRUSCHI
