L O U V R E M U S E U M The Louvre or the Louvre Museum is the world s largest museum and a historic monument in Paris, France. Louvre Museum, French Musée du Louvre, official name Great Louvre, French Grand Louvre, national museum and art gallery of France, housed in part of a large palace in Paris that was built on the right-bank site of the 12th-century fortress of Philip Augustus. In 1546 Francis I, who was a great art collector, had this old castle razed and began to build on its site another royal residence, the Louvre, which was added to by almost every subsequent French monarch. Under Francis I, only a small portion of the present Louvre was completed, under the architect Pierre Words By Jess McHugh Lescot. This original section is today the southwestern part of the Cour Carrée. In the 17th century, major additions were made to the building complex by Louis XIII and Louis XIV. Cardinal de Richelieu, the chief minister of Louis XIII, acquired great works of art for the king. Louis XIV and his minister, Cardinal Mazarin, acquired outstanding art collections, including that of Charles I of England. A committee consisting of the architects Claude Perrault and Louis Le Vau and the decorator and painter Charles Le Brun planned that part of the Louvre which is known as the Colonnade. The Louvre ceased to be a royal residence when Louis XIV moved his court to Versailles in The idea of using the Louvre as a public museum originated in the 18th century. The comte d Angiviller helped build and plan the Grande Galerie and continued to acquire major works of art. In 1793 the revolutionary government opened to the public the Musée Central des Arts in the Grande Galerie. Under Napoleon the Cour Carrée and a wing on the north along the rue de Rivoli were begun. In the 19th century two major wings, their galleries and pavilions extending west, were completed, and Napoleon III was responsible for the exhibition that opened them. The completed Louvre was a vast complex of buildings forming two main quadrilaterals and enclosing two large courtyards. The Louvre building complex underwent a major remodeling in the 1980s and 90s in order to make the old museum more accessible and accommodating to its visitors. To this end, a vast underground complex of offices, shops, exhibition spaces, storage areas, and parking areas, as well as an auditorium, a tourist bus depot, and a cafeteria, was constructed underneath the Louvre s central courtyards of the Cour Napoléon and the Cour du Carrousel. The ground-level entrance to this complex was situated in the centre of the Cour Napoléon and was crowned by a controversial steel-and-glass pyramid designed by the American architect I.M. Pei. The underground complex of support facilities and public amenities was opened in In 1993, on the museum s 200th anniversary, the rebuilt Richelieu wing, formerly occupied by France s Ministry of Finance, was opened; for the first time, the entire Louvre was devoted to museum purposes. The new wing, also designed by Pei, had more than 230,000 square feet (21,368 square metres) of exhibition space, originally housing collections of European painting, decorative arts, and Islamic art. Three glass-roofed interior courtyards displayed French sculpture and ancient Assyrian artworks. The museum s expanding collection of Islamic art later moved into its own wing (opened 2012), for which Italian architects Mario Bellini and Rudy Ricciotti enclosed another interior courtyard beneath an undulating goldcoloured roof made of glass and steel. In 2012 a satellite location of the Louvre in the northern French town of Lens opened to the public. The museum, designed by the Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, was intended to boost the economy of the region and to alleviate crowds at the Paris site. Plans for another branch, on Saadiyat Island, off the coast of Abū aby, were announced by the French government in A 30- year agreement called for hundreds of works of art belonging to the Louvre in Paris to be rented to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. The Louvre s painting collection is one of the richest in the world, representing all periods of European art up to the Revolutions of (Works painted after that date that the Louvre once housed were transferred to the Orsay Museum upon its opening in 1986.) The Louvre s collection of French paintings from the 15th to the 19th century is unsurpassed in the world, and it also has many masterpieces by Italian Renaissance painters and Flemish and Dutch painters of the Baroque period. The department of decorative arts displays the treasures of the French kings bronzes, miniatures, pottery, tapestries, jewelry, and furniture while the department of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman antiquities features architecture, sculpture, mosaics, bronzes, jewelry, and pottery. The department of Egyptian antiquities was established in 1826 to organize the collections acquired during Napoleon s Egyptian campaign. The department of Near Eastern antiquities is most important for its collection of Mesopotamian art. 6 SEP SEP 2016

ARC DE TRIOMPHE MONUMENT IN PARIS Words By J B Stevens When you are thinking about your holiday you are no doubt going to try and find out what is within the local area, but when it comes to the capital city of France, there are so many monuments and landmarks in Paris that it is sometimes a hard job deciding on exactly what places to visit. Well in this article we thought we would provide you with a bit of information about just one of these incredible monuments called the Arc de Triomphe that honors those who fought for France. You have no doubt heard of the famous Avenue des Champs-Elysees, which is known for its fantastic shops, restaurants, hotels plus much more and the Arc de Triomphe is positioned at the western end of the Champs-Elysees, standing in the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle. Designed in 1806 and standing at over 51 metres high, this is the second largest triumphal arch in existence and to give you an idea on how large this monument really is, only a few weeks after the victory parade in Paris that celebrated the end of World War I, a pilot called Charles Godefroy flew his biplane right through the center of it! However, even though this landmark arch was commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon, it was not actually completed until the 1830 s during the reign of King Louis- Philippe and was built to signify peace. The Arc de Triomphe is also home to the Tomb of the Unkown Soldier, which was taken from the idea of the unknown warrior at Westminster Abbey in the United Kingdom, and has an eternal flame, which by the way, has only ever been put out once when a drunken man decided to urinate on it and yes he was quickly arrested!! It has the first eternal flame lit in Western Europe since the year 391 and it burns in memory of the dead who were never identified, now in both World War I and World War II. Even President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline paid their respects at the tomb and when President Kennedy was assassinated, Jacqueline decided to do a similar tribute with an eternal flame. The French President went to Washington to attend the funeral and witnessed the lighting of the flame that had always been in Jacqueline Kennedy s mind since her visit to France. 12 SEP SEP 2016

There are richly sculptured friezes of soldiers depicted upon the masonry of the Arc de Triomphe, but in the attic above, there are 30 shields which are engraved with the names of major revolutionary and Napoleonic military victories, plus the inside walls of this historical monument list the names of hundreds of French generals. On 11th November on the anniversary of the armistice between France and Germany that was signed in 1918, there is now a ceremony held there every year, plus there have also been numerous parades and other major events, for which the Arc de Triomphe is a focal point. But it is probably without a doubt one of the main reasons that most people know about the Arc de Triomphe is through the famous cycle race, The Tour de France as this plays an important role for the participants. The minute that this fabulous monumental arch comes into view, the cyclists know that the race is almost finished, which is probably why you see a few smiles on their faces at this point! as the Tour de France ends with vast crowds and cheering on the Champs-Elysees Avenue, with some very exhausted participants. Yet you can reach the Arc de Triomphe at a little more leisurely pace, either utilizing some of the bus tours in Paris or hiring a bike. Although most people get to this famous site by taking a stroll along the Champs-Elysees and utilizing the tunnel on the north side, which is a darn site safer than trying to dodge the traffic! It is open to the public for visits up until gone 10pm, which is a great place to get to see the shimmering lights along the Avenue as the night draws in and for those of you who like a bit of history, there is a small museum inside the Arc de Triomphe, which provides a lot of information about its construction and major points in history. Plus the views from the top, where you can see the Eiffel Tower in one direction, obviously with the Avenue des Champs-Elysees, and the Grande Arche within the business district in another direction plus the Sacre Coeur Basillica in the distance, makes a tremendous spot to experience the wonders of Paris and its phenomenal landmarks. However, there is no lift, so to get to the viewing platform at the top, there are a lot of steps to climb! 14 15

DISNEYLAND PARIS Now when it comes to the different areas, we found that the Fantasy Land with people dressed as Disney characters such as Snow White and Mickey Mouse was the highlight of the whole park for the young children especially the girls. But the boys absolutely love Frontier Land, which has a Wild West theme and it even brings back those childhood memories of playing Cowboys and Indians for the adults that never seem to grow up! Disneyland has become known as the place to take your children for a fun and exciting time of fantasy that they will never forget and with the Disneyland Resort Paris being accessible to over three hundred million people that can fly there in under two hours and at least sixty million people that can get there with not more than a four hour drive, it is the perfect destination for anyone living in Europe. Disneyland Paris is open every single day of the year without exception and has a completely different feel in winter compared to summer, but whatever time of year you visit, you are sure to have a lasting memory of the fantasy castle that is the centerpiece of the whole park and has fantastic shops. The Sleeping Beauty s Castle or in French called Le Chateau de la Belle au Bois Dormant, is a truly magical sight that was inspired by classic fairytale illustrations rather than being based purely on a true chateau like the castle at Disneyland Florida, which was designed upon the Chateau de Ussé that was the inspiration for the sleeping beauty fairytale, which is only a short distance way from Paris and this amusement park. Everyone loved going down to the dungeons, but for us it was the terrific view from the balcony of some of the other things we wanted to explore that made us realize we should have arranged to be there longer and although the shops inside are the castle are great, we made a quick exit from these so we did not spend too much money! Something else you will find when at Disneyland Paris is the amount of different types of restaurants and snack places offering lots of choice of cuisine and catering for every budget, plus they are all designed around the theme for whatever area of the park you are at. Words By Martyn Davis Even though plans to build a Disney park in Europe were first discussed in the early 1970 s, it was not until the late 1980 s that construction began at the desired location just outside of Paris and it opened in 1992, but did not have that instant success the owners were hoping for. Yet many years down the road, the complex has expanded not only to include the Disneyland Park with its five different themed areas but also with the Walt Disney Studios Park that opened in 2002, and through their advertising and promotions Disneyland Paris Resort has become one of the most popular holiday destinations throughout the whole of Europe, and it does not take much imagination to know why! 18 SEP SEP 2016

WELCOME TO A WORLD OF GOOD So from hotdogs to pizza and Mexican to French cuisine, or fish and chips to BBQ ribs, plus When you travel with G Adventures, you get more than an experience that connects you with like-minded travellers. You become a part of a global social enterprise that brings you into close contact with people and places in a way you never could on your own. Your adventure makes a difference. will enjoy, but our favorite was the Cowboy Cookout, which is in a barn and they had a country sandwiches, cakes, pastries and ice cream, there is always going to be something that everyone music band playing at the time, while we were eating our BBQ chicken! But because Disneyland Paris has expanded so much over the time it has been open, a day is not nearly long enough to enjoy everything and staying at one of the themed hotels can be a great experience in itself. From a hotel that has rustic charm to one that makes you feel like you are in a desert, you have seven different hotels to choose from, all with different budgets and some will not break the bank. Yet thinking about the costs, there are some great deals available at all different times of the year including things like children under seven going free, an extra nights stay for the same cost, etc., so you do not really need to have large pockets. Mind you, do make sure you have enough spending money for all of those gifts, souvenirs, food and extras that you know the children keep begging for! And you cannot forget about the Walt Disney Studios Park either, which is why we feel you need more than just a day here now, as the whole park has a great amount of different attractions that cater for everyone from the youngest in your party to the oldest. So apart from the fabulous roller coaster rides here, if you would rather keep your feet firmly on the ground then there are some terrific shows featuring the popular and well-known Disney characters, but at the Walt Disney Studios Park you can even have a tour of a true recording studio and look at lots of rock memorabilia including signed guitars on display. There is also the Disney Village that has lots of restaurants and shops that are even open after the park closes, plus a very good 18-hole golf course so you will never run out of places to go and things to see and do. 21 gadventures.com

DECONSTRUCTING HISTORY: EIFFEL TOWER Originally intended as a temporary installation, the Eiffel Tower has become one of the most enduring symbols of France and the industrial age. When Gustave Eiffel s company built Paris most recognizable monument for the 1889 World s Fair, many regarded the massive iron structure with skepticism. Today, the Eiffel Tower, which continues to serve an important role in television and radio broadcasts, is considered an architectural wonder and attracts more visitors than any other paid tourist attraction in the world. Words By History.com Staff In 1889, Paris hosted an Exposition Universelle (World s Fair) to mark the 100-year anniversary of the French Revolution. More than 100 artists submitted competing plans for a monument to be built on the Champ-de-Mars, located in central Paris, and serve as the exposition s entrance. The commission was granted to Eiffel et Compagnie, a consulting and construction firm owned by the acclaimed bridge builder, architect and metals expert Alexandre- Gustave Eiffel. While Eiffel himself often receives full credit for the monument that bears his name, it was one of his employees a structural engineer named Maurice Koechlin who came up with and fine-tuned the concept. Several years earlier, the pair had collaborated on the Statue of Liberty s metal armature.

Eiffel reportedly rejected Koechlin s original plan for the tower, instructing him to add more ornate flourishes. The final design called for more than 18,000 pieces of puddle iron, a type of wrought iron used in construction, and 2.5 million rivets. Several hundred workers spent two years assembling the framework of the iconic lattice tower, which at its inauguration in March 1889 stood nearly 1,000 feet high and was the tallest structure in the world a distinction it held until the completion of New York City s Chrysler Building in (In 1957, an antenna was added that increased the structure s height by 65 feet, making it taller than the Chrysler Building but not the Empire State Building, which had surpassed its neighbor in 1931.) Initially, only the Eiffel Tower s second-floor platform was open to the public; later, all three levels, two of which now feature restaurants, would be reachable by stairway or one of eight elevators. Millions of visitors during and after the World s Fair marveled at Paris newly erected architectural wonder. Not all of the city s inhabitants were as enthusiastic, however: Many Parisians either feared it was structurally unsound or considered it an eyesore. The novelist Guy de Maupassant, for example, allegedly hated the tower so much that he often ate lunch in the restaurant at its base, the only vantage point from which he could completely avoid glimpsing its looming silhouette. THE EIFFEL TOWER BECOMES A PERMANENT FEATURE OF THE PARIS SKYLINE Originally intended as a temporary exhibit, the Eiffel Tower was almost torn down and scrapped in City officials opted to save it after recognizing its value as a radiotelegraph station. Several years later, during World War I, the Eiffel Tower intercepted enemy radio communications, relayed zeppelin alerts and was used to dispatch emergency troop reinforcements. It escaped destruction a second time during World War II: Hitler initially ordered the demolition of the city s most cherished symbol, but the command was never carried out. Also during the German occupation of Paris, French resistance fighters famously cut the Eiffel Tower s elevator cables so that the Nazis had to climb the stairs. Over the years, the Eiffel Tower has been the site of numerous high-profile stunts, ceremonial events and even scientific experiments. In 1911, for instance, the German physicist Theodor Wulf used an electrometer to detect higher levels of radiation at its top than at its base, observing the effects of what are now called cosmic rays. The Eiffel Tower has also inspired more than 30 replicas and similar structures in various cities around the world. Now one of the most recognizable structures on the planet, the Eiffel Tower underwent a major facelift in 1986 and is repainted every seven years. It welcomes more visitors than any other paid monument in the world an estimated 7 million people per year. Some 500 employees are responsible for its daily operations, working in its restaurants, manning its elevators, ensuring its security and directing the eager crowds flocking the tower s platforms to enjoy panoramic views of the City of Lights. The base pillars of the Eiffel Tower are oriented with the four points of the compass. 24 SEP SEP 2016

We are sure that you have heard of the Champs Elysees, which is actually the most prestigious and broadest avenue in Paris, but its official name, the Avenue des Champs-Elysees, is very popular with the rich and famous for a shopping trip with its luxury specialty shops and fantastic cafes. But known as the most beautiful avenue in the world, it is not just a place for the rich, any visitor to Paris should not miss taking a walk along this tree lined avenue, where it plays host to numerous special occasions including the finish of the famous Tour de France, and the military parades held on Bastille Day, which are the largest parades in Europe. Did you realise that after New York City s Fifth Avenue, the Champs Elysees is the second most expensive strip of real estate in the world with rent being as high as 600,000 or more per year for only a space of around 100 square metres, so you can no doubt imagine why there are famous names such as Guerlain Parfumerie with its beautiful curved stairacase and turn of the century elegance, Laduree tearoom, the Lido, which is famous for its risque shows and the Louis Vuitton flagship store. Words By J B Stevens THE CHAMPS ELYSEES AVENUE This famous avenue is also actually the second widest in Europe, after the Unirii Boulevard in Bucharest, but also has chains stores like Gap, Zara and Nike, plus a Virgin record store and a Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream House and although there are still some really nice cafes and restaurants you will also find a McDonalds and other fast food outlets. There are also lots of banks, car show rooms, airline offices, cinemas, theatres and hotels situated on the Avenue des Champs Elysees. However, if want to visit the really famous designer stores such as Chanel, Christian Dior, Guy Laroche, Givenchy, Cartier, Yves Saint Laurent, etc. then you will need to venture off to one of the very fashionable side streets such as the Avenue Montaigne or the Rue du Faubourg Saint Honore, but bear in mind that a lot of stores in Paris are closed on a Sunday. 26 SEP SEP 2016
